Now a federal holiday, Juneteenth (June 19) commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S. Although this day marks just the beginning of an ongoing battle for equality, Juneteenth represents an opportunity to celebrate the joy of the Black experience as much as the hardship. And TheWrap’s got a great list of films to get that celebration started.
Once you’ve checked out some of the more educational Juneteenth-related fare, like “13th” or “I Am Not Your Negro,” consider adding some of these flicks to your streaming list.
“Soul” (Disney+)
“Soul,” Pixar’s first film to feature an African-American protagonist, follows Joe Gardener, a middle school music teacher with dreams of becoming a jazz star. When Joe dies prematurely before receiving his big break, he gets a second chance at his fantasy when accidentally enters the Great Before — a place that prepares unborn souls for real life. Cineplex swung to a fourth quarter profit as overall revenues rose 16.7 percent to 350.1 million, against its 2021 performance.
For the three months to Dec. 31, 2022, the Canadian exhibitor saw net income rise to 10.2 million, compared to a net loss of 21.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2021. Cineplex also saw its investment in premium movie viewing experiences like 3D, UltraAVX, VIP seating and Imax pay off as the company set a record of 50 per cent of box office revenues coming from reserved seating and big screen formats.
At the same time, theater attendance during the fourth quarter fell just over 10 percent to 9.2 million patrons. Cineplex president and CEO Ellis Jacob told analysts during a morning call that the drop in theater attendance was due in part to Covid 19-related production delays shifting the theatrical releases like Shazam: Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom from Warner Bros. Discovery to 2023.

Hollywood’s studios and labor unions have renewed the Covid-19 safety protocols with some testing requirements for workers not in the immediate film production area removed.
Part I of the Covid-19 Safety Agreement remains unchanged, continuing to require the strictest protocols be implemented on productions occurring in any metropolitan area or county with 14 or more Covid-19 hospital admissions per 100,000 people. Most major production hubs in the United States, including Los Angeles, currently have hospitalization rates below this threshold.
Most productions are currently working under Part II of the agreement, which allows for looser testing requirements on sets in areas with lower hospitalization rates. Under the new changes, pre-employment testing is no longer required for workers in zones B and C, areas of productions that are distanced from Zone A, where shooting directly takes place and actors perform in front of the camera without a mask.

The latest extension to Hollywood’s Covid-19 safety agreement loosens protocols when Covid-19 hospital admissions are low.
The two-tiered agreement, first put into effect in September 2020, establishes strict protocols (listed under “Part I” of the agreement) when a production is staged in a county or metropolitan area with 14 or more hospital admissions for Covid-19 per 100,000 people. Under that threshold, less stringent protocols take effect (under “Part II”).
On Friday, industry unions announced that, in areas with low Covid-19 hospital admissions, productions can soon end pre-employment testing for employees working in Zones “B” and “C,” away from principal performers. The new changes also nix requirements that workers in Zone B test weekly for the virus, now only requiring producers to provide a Covid-19 test upon request if one of those crew members comes into close contact with someone who has contracted the illness. According to the union coalition, no changes were...

As Covid-19 shuttered businesses across America, countless companies asked their insurers to cover losses under traditional property insurance policies and were denied in droves.
But Hollywood had another safety net: production insurance. These specialized policies cover a wide range of risks, including pandemics — at least for policies issued before this world-altering event. Unlike other types of insurance, production policies have not been the subject of extensive litigation, until recently.
While the historical willingness and ability of entertainment companies, insurers and their intermediaries to amicably resolve claims is positive, it could also mean that the policy language has not been tested and clarified as a result of litigated disputes.
As we move through Covid-19 and focus on other risks like geopolitical instability and extreme weather, policyholders should consider the issues raised during Covid-19 claims and review their policies in planning for how to maximize coverage in the future.

Can a person ever really be “cancelled”? I used to think not. Supposedly radioactive celebrities still manage to land lucrative Netflix specials, sell out stadiums, and win illustrious awards. But what happens when they don’t? You end up with a film like My Son Hunter.
The political satire, released today online, focuses on Hunter Biden, the son of the sitting US president. It stars Laurence Fox as Hunter, John James as Joe Biden, and Gina Carano as the narrator, a secret service agent invented for the purposes of the film. Fox, an actor whose early films include Robert Altman’s Gosford Park and Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth: The Golden Age, has become a self-professed “cancelled” person in recent years, thanks to widely criticised remarks on issues such as Covid-19, Black Lives Matter, and trans rights. Carano, a former wrestler, is also said to have been “cancelled”; her recurring stint...

How ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Production Designer Found Artistic Triumphs Despite Covid Challenges
Click here to read the full article.
When working on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, you are always taking one step at a time. The show kind of unfolds as you make choices. I’ve quoted our director of photography a couple of times as having said he wanted to give the show an optimistic look because of its historical setting. This period after World War II and going into the 1950s was a very optimistic period. My job was just a matter of trying to reflect that to the audience with what I see in the writing and in our characters.
The biggest challenge for us last year, of course, was Covid-19 and how to do what we do with all the new safety protocols. We were very limited at the beginning of the season on what we could do in New York City.

Robert Pattinson’s moody superhero adventure “The Batman” prevailed at the box office again.
The Warner Bros. film earned $66 million from 4,417 North American theaters in its second weekend of release, propelling its domestic tally to a robust $238.5 million. After only 10 days on the big screen, “The Batman” ranks as the highest-grossing movie of 2022, as well as the second-highest grossing film since the onset of Covid-19. Only “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which has generated a stellar $792 million in North America, has earned more money at the domestic box office in the past two years.
Ticket sales for “The Batman” declined 51% from its $134 million debut, a better hold than most comic book tentpoles — pandemic or not. Recent Covid-era releases, such as “The Suicide Squad,” “Eternals,” “Black Widow” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” plummeted anywhere from 53% to 71% in their sophomore outings. And other DC adaptations, including “Justice League,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice...

"You don't need to be married to cuddle with someone." That's true! Cinedigm has revealed the trailer for 7 Days, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Roshan Sethi. This premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival last year and it just won for Best First Feature at the 2022 Indie Spirit Awards. As if their pre-arranged date, organized by their traditional Indian parents, wasn't uncomfortable enough, Ravi and Rita are forced to shelter in place together as Covid-19's reach intensifies. Ravi and Rita seemingly have nothing in common. The situation turns both awkward and enlightening when they find themselves trapped inside together for a week. Starring Geraldine Viswanathan and Karan Soni. It's executive produced by the Duplass Brothers, who are some of the best supporters of up-and-coming indie filmmakers. This looks really sweet! And awkwardly fun. Even though it's yet another pandemic comedy about being stuck together. Here's the official US...

Compston was asked by host Moyles about updates on “Line of Duty,” which last aired its sixth season in May. Compston shared his belief that the show would return, clarifying that an extended hiatus between seasons isn’t new for the series, which has aired a new season once every two years since its premiere in 2012.

The documentary traces the origins of racial health disparities to practices that began during slavery in the U.S. and continue today. Update, 7:50 Pm Pt: At one point during Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech, and he started to talk about the deaths of service members due to environmental exposure, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-co) interrupted him, shouting, “Yeah, 13 of them!”
She was booed — by members of both parties.
The headline of the State of the Union speech was the hard line that Biden took toward Vladimir Putin and the ovation that greeted the Ukrainian ambassador, Oksana Markarova, who was seated next to First Lady Jill Biden. Making movies safely in the time of Covid-19 has been a challenging affair. Many films have experienced delays and studios have basically pushed back their entire release slates to accommodate for the setbacks. But it seems like the fifth "Indiana Jones" film had a few more troubles than most.
Last year, Disney announced that a number of Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm projects would be moved around due to the ongoing pandemic. This caused Harrison Ford's legendary adventurer to reschedule his next trip from July 29, 2022 to June 30, 2023. After two consecutive years of a mostly virtual event, the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is resuming in-person festivities this coming fall. The festival is set to take place September 8–18, TIFF representatives announced February 24. For its 47th edition, Toronto will feature 11 days of “the best that the international film community has to offer, while spotlighting and championing the Canadian film industry and its filmmaking talent.”
Last year, the festival provided minimal and scaled-back, in-person, socially distanced, and vaccine-mandated screenings at its various venues throughout the city. Despite its unusual format, the 2021 edition of TIFF provided an opportunity to experience the unique challenges and opportunities of forging forward with a physical film festival in the era of Covid-19, in spite of the many risks and reservations.
The festival shifted entirely to a virtual format in 2020 (as did the near entirety of the festival world), but offered a healthy selection of its...

“The real concern is around insurance,” said one producer.
UK independent film and TV producers are facing uncertainty ahead of the publication of updated Covid safety guidelines by the British Film Commission (Bfc) following the end of all legal Covid regulations in England as of today (February 24).
At the same time, an insurance broker is calling for a three-month extension to the government-backed Production Restart Scheme (Prs) until the end of July.

While the U.K. is set to shed the last of its pandemic restrictions — including the requirement to self-isolate if testing positive for Covid-19 — the film and TV industry will continue to abide by Covid protocols for now, Variety has confirmed.
Part of the reason for this is because the end to pandemic restrictions will not be universally implemented across all four nations of the U.K. While the rules on self-isolation lift in England and Northern Ireland from Thursday (Feb. 24), in Scotland and Wales it remains enshrined in law that anyone testing positive for Covid-19 must self-isolate.
The British Film Commission (Bfc) says that while it plans to update its “Working Safely During Covid-19 in Film and High-end TV Drama Production” from Thursday to incorporate the changes to self-isolation rules, it will include the government’s guidance that anyone testing positive in England and Northern Ireland is still “advised” to self-isolate,...

"Not every man in a suit and tie is a gentleman. Not every gentleman wears a suit and tie." But some still do... The Outfit is the first feature film directed by an up-and-coming writer and producer named Graham Moore, originally born in Chicago, Illinois. The film recently premiered as a Special Screening at the 2022 Berlin Film Festival and it's a clever, sneaky little mob thriller set in one location. It has this familiar "made during the pandemic" vibe, specifically that it's built around a very small cast and it all takes place in one location meaning they could make it in a small studio with a small crew and easily follow all the Covid-19 rules & regulations. But that doesn't take away from the thrill of the film, as it's a gripping tale of Chicago mobsters and one tailor who might just be smarter than all of them. If you've...

As Brent Lang and Rebecca Rubin aptly pointed out in their Dec. 30 story, the mega-success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” — with global ticket sales of nearly $1.4 billion to date — reminds us that movie theaters “still create a kind of grand cultural happening that simply can’t be replicated on Netflix.”
While that is certainly the case, I remain personally troubled by the fact that so many other year-end releases, including “West Side Story,” “The Matrix Resurrections,” “Nightmare Alley,” “The King’s Man,” “King Richard,” “Belfast,” “C’mon C’mon,” “Spencer” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” among others, failed to lure crowds to multiplexes.

Production on NBC’s marquee drama series “Chicago Fire” has been suspended after several cast and crew members tested positive for Covid-19. A source close to the production confirmed to Variety that operations have ceased for the moment “out of an abundance of caution.”
“Chicago Fire” recently returned to filming after a holiday break. Members of the production were notified to halt operations on Wednesday. The production will take immediate action by employing contact tracing as per Covid-19 production guidelines implemented by the state, county and NBCUniversal.
Reports indicate that the series plans on resuming production next week. However, the situation remains uncertain, dependent on if the production can return to work safely.
“Chicago Fire” is only the latest network production to be impacted by the current surge of Covid-19 and its more transmissible omicron variant. CBS’ “NCIS” also paused production after Covid-19 was detected among cast members and those who directly interact with them.

Paramount+ is quickly becoming the home for all of our favorite '90s cartoons. The streaming platform nabbed a killer deal with the creators of "South Park" to host 14 exclusive movies for the next five years, with the first two imagining what the town of South Park would look like after the four boys reached adulthood and endured the world changes caused by Covid-19. Now, the platform has inked another deal, this time with "King of the Hill," "Silicon Valley," and "Idiocracy" creator Mike Judge, for the return of "Beavis and Butt-Head."

Miley Cyrus almost wore a costume more fitting for the New Year’s baby.
During her live New Year’s Eve television show from Miami, the singer lost her skimpy top while strutting onstage at the start of the song “Party in the U.S.A.” Realizing that she was about to see more than the ball drop, she turned and headed backstage as her band played on.
She returned wearing a red jacket that she had used earlier in the show. “Everybody’s definitely looking at me now,” Cyrus said, adding, “I’m still in the most clothes that I’ve ever worn on stage.”
Later in the show, cohost Pete Davidson thought it was only fair that he, too, show a glimpse of his nipple, lifting his t-shirt to reveal the orb.

Earlier this month, Virginia-based movie theater owner Mark O’Meara witnessed something he hadn’t seen in nearly two years. A packed house.
Audiences filled the 190-seat auditorium at University Mall in Fairfax to watch “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the epic finale in Tom Holland’s web-slinging superhero trilogy. In the days since, the Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios film has become the kind of global box office juggernaut that once seemed impossible in the wake of Covid-19. “No Way Home” has already earned $1 billion globally after less than two weeks in theaters and it is continuing to put up monster grosses through the holidays.
“I went in front of the crowd and waved my hands. I think we filled up because other theaters were sold out,” O’Meara says. “We’re not as well known, and there were a significant number of people who had said they had never been to our theater before.

For its upcoming 26th edition the Capri Hollywood Intl. Film Festival, dedicated to launching Oscar hopefuls and establishing a creative and business bridgehead between Hollywood and Italy’s film and showbiz communities, is countering the Omicron variant by expanding its venues beyond the “blue island” off the coast of Naples.
For sanitary safety reasons, the small picturesque town of Sorrento, overlooking the bay of Naples, will become the main hub where guests, most of whom this year will be flying from Europe for the Dec. 26-Jan. 2 shindig, will congregate.
Expected international attendees include directors Michael Radford and Terry Gilliam, who are fest regulars, coming from the U.K. Also from the Blighty, actor Sadie Frost making the trek to promote British director Kirsty Bell’s Covid-19 debut feature lockdown drama “A Bird Flew In,” having its international premiere. Bell will be receiving the fest’s European Breakout Director of the Year award.

Omicron is blasting through New York. And while the Covid-19 variant appears to be less harmful than other strains — particularly in vaccinated people — its highly transmissible nature has resulted in a record-breaking amount of new cases across the metropolis. Citizens are clamoring to get tested around the holidays, and some have stumbled upon BeeperMD, which claims to send healthcare professionals on house calls. One problem: They don’t always deliver.

Has “Spider-Man” become Hollywood’s most important film franchise?
One could rightfully say that, duh, Peter Parker is part of Marvel, the biggest entertainment brand, so…umm…yeah? But the web-slinging superhero has made a pretty good case for his omnipotence after “No Way Home,” the epic finale in the Tom Holland-led comic book trilogy, obliterated pandemic-era box office records over the weekend, debuting above initial estimates to $260 million in the U.S. and Canada.
Despite concerns over rapidly spreading Covid-19 variants, inaugural ticket sales for “No Way Home” were able to reach rarified heights, and not just by Covid standards. The Sony Pictures film landed the second-highest debut in Hollywood history behind only “Avengers: Endgame” ($357 million). Globally, it has netted $600 million, the third-biggest worldwide launch ever after “Avengers: Endgame” ($1.2 billion) and “Avengers: Infinity War” ($640 million). Pandemic or not, those are some head-spinning figures.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai have made huge strides in attracting foreign film and TV productions to the United Arab Emirates as part of an ongoing effort by the federation of states on the Persian Gulf to diversify from their oil-based economy.
They have come a long way since 2006 when Matt Damon and George Clooney-starrer “Syriana” marked the first major Hollywood film shot in the Dubai desert, followed by “The Kingdom,” which brought Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner to Abu Dhabi in 2007. In 2011, UAE aficionado Tom Cruise personally pulled off the stunt of gliding down Dubai’s 163-floor Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper, in “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.”
Besides Hollywood, Bollywood in more recent years has become a major customer with an increasing number of Indian blockbusters choosing to shoot in the UAE, which is turning out to be a really good fit.

Burnout and disassociation were very real things for everybody during the deep days of lockdown, and that includes actor Meryl Streep. Her first time back on a set following the onset of Covid-19 back in early 2020 was for Adam McKay’s star-studded Netflix comedy “Don’t Look Up,” which was supposed to begin filming in April 2020 before being pushed to November of last year.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Streep said she temporarily “forgot how to act” when it was time to show up for production, which took place throughout the Northeast. In the film, she plays flippant United States President Janie Orlean, who’s hardly convinced by scientists Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence that an asteroid is headed to destroy the planet Earth.

“Saturday Night Live” bowed to the rising threat of Covid-19, opening its final show of 2021 with a pre-taped segment that featured Tom Hanks, Tina Fey, Steve Martin and Kenan Thompson welcoming host Paul Rudd into the “Five-Timers Club.”
Production of tonight’s “SNL” was thrown into disarray late this week when numerous cast members tested positive for Covid-19. Crew members became vocal about concerns of gathering as usual to produce the live broadcast at 30 Rock’s famed Studio 8H, prompting NBC to drop the live audience and use a limited crew for tonight’s installment.
The episode opened with a “previously recorded” slate as Tom Hanks bounded out on the familiar stage in a royal blue smoking jacket with an oversized “5” patch over the right breast. Rudd, the beloved comedy character actor, was set to log his fifth time at the helm of “SNL.”

The next installment of Universal Pictures’ “Fast & Furious” saga will take a little detour before reaching its final destination.
The 10th chapter in the long-running ode to fast cars, physics-defying stunts and family will hit theaters on May 19, 2023. That’s a little more than a month after its previously scheduled debut of April 7, 2023 and moves the “Fast & Furious” sequel firmly into the summer blockbuster season.
Universal is taking advantage of the space left by Dom Toretto and company and will slot an untitled animated film into that berth. It moves from the previously announced March 24, 2023 slot. No details yet on that one beyond that its from the studio behind “Shrek” and that it promises to be an event (we’ll be the judge of that).
The most recent “Fast & Furious” film, “F9” aka “F9: The Fast Saga” also known as “Fast & Furious 9” opened in theaters last summer.
