Storyline

The Lost City of Z tells the incredible true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett, who journeys into the Amazon at the dawn of the 20th century and discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment who regard indigenous populations as "savages," the determined Fawcett - supported by his devoted wife, son and aide de camp returns time and again to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case, culminating in his mysterious disappearance in 1925.

Goofs

Percy Fawcett is in the artillery, but his red uniform is actually meant for infantry soldiers. This was intentional, as the director liked the way the colors worked and allowed him to plausibly put Fawcett in the trenches in World War I later on. See more »

Quotes

Jack Fawcett: I understand that it's dangerous, but you've said so yourself, with everything that's happened in Europe, it's not possible to choose a safe passage through life. So many men near my own age did not return from the war, and... And who is to say it will not happen again? It could, mother. It could happen again.
Nina Fawcett: By all accounts, I should be furious because you've just... You've just used my very own words against me. And how can I refute them? They are my own.

Biopic of the end of empire
26 March 2017 | by robbierunciman-1See all my reviews

I enjoyed the movie - it was a bit paint by numbers but it covered a huge area of his life and his motivations, it was also a story of decline, the derring-do of the British empire and particular type of hero. I think that he has been overlooked because he 'failed' but the film shows how he respected the cultures he found, in contrast to the other members of RGS. The class-based snobbery of the period is also well represented. Highly watchable and recommended.
