Mickey 17might be struggling at the box office, but one of its stars, Naomi Ackie, is thriving. After shrugging off being wasted in the worst Star Wars movie, she's ascended in her career by taking on diverse film genres, like the secretive thrills of Blink Twice or the biopic bombast of I Wanna Dance With Somebody. She continuously fills her roles with verve and intrigue, somebody who draws inherent interest in her movement without the need to speak. It's something she's done since her debut film, where she held her own against Florence Pugh inLady Macbeth, a cold-blooded thriller masquerading as a prestigious chamber drama.

Exclusive: Black Label Media has taken rights to Patrick Hoffman’s debut crime novel The White Van to develop as a feature for filmmaker Grant Singer.
Singer and author Hoffman will team to adapt the novel together.
The project reunites Singer with Black Label Media on the heels of Reptile, his chart-topping Netflix feature debut starring Benicio Del Toro, which the company also produced. That movie premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
The White Van is a kinetic heist thriller following a troubled young woman who is lured into a criminal scheme that leaves her wanted for bank robbery and hunted by a corrupt cop who doesn’t want justice – but wants the money for himself. Evoking crime novelists like Dennis Lehane and gritty seventies films like Dog Day Afternoon, the line between good and evil blurs as criminals, cops, and hustlers collide in the unforgiving underbelly of San Francisco.

Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was a poster child for the power of inclusion when it broke box office records in 2023, but the $1.45 billion-grossing movie is only the 119th most inclusive film made in the past five years, according to the Inclusion List.
The annual list — presented by Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, in collaboration with the Adobe Foundation — is a data-driven ranking that identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023 and ranks a single year’s films across gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability and age representation.
“Our goal with the Inclusion List is to celebrate those who are showcasing and working with exceptional talent from all backgrounds,” stated Dr. Smith in a press release announcing the researchers’ findings. “In the second year of its release, the newest iteration of the Inclusion List spotlights films, filmmakers, and distributors who clearly demonstrate that inclusion...

The second iteration of The Inclusion List from Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative has identified the 150 most inclusive films from 2019 to 2023, adding to its initial class of 100 films by naming 50 new titles for the year 2023.
Four films from that year have made it into the Top 10 Most Inclusive Films for that timespan, according to the study released Wednesday, with A Thousand and One taking the No. 2 spot overall, Bottoms coming in seventh, The Color Purple ninth and The Blackening in 10th.
The list’s point system took into account talent both in front of and behind the camera, with a total of 20 points broken down into 10-point halves for both on-screen and off-screen inclusion. Two distinct processes were used, one for leads/co-leads and the other for all speaking characters. A film could earn up to 10 points for on-screen inclusion based on the five inclusion indicators across leads/co leads (up to 5 points) and all speaking characters (up to 5 points).
A Thousand and One ranks second with a score of 13.6/20, while Bottoms scores a 12.2/20. The Color Purple and The Blackening are tied with a score of 11.8/20. The highest scoring film on the list remains Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King (2022) with a 15/20.
The list also evaluated 2023 films displaying the best inclusivity across five categories: gender, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+, disability, and age. It named five of the most inclusive 2023 films within each of those categories.
The 2023 films that scored the highest for the gender indicator of inclusion were A Thousand and One, You Hurt My Feelings, The Marvels, Priscilla and Barbie. A Thousand and One also scored high on the race/ethnicity list alongside 2023’s Joy Ride, The Color Purple, The Blackening and House Party. In the LGBTQ+ category, the top five films of 2023 were All of Us Strangers, Theater Camp, Bottoms, Knock at the Cabin and Saltburn. 2023 releases ranking high in the disability category included What Happens Later, John Wick: Chapter 4, Moving On, Golda and The Holdovers. Films from 2023 that scored highest in their representation of age on the big screen were Moving On, Book Club: The Next Chapter, Marlowe, The Miracle Club and Golda.
Researchers also took into consideration the race and ethnicity of crew members in the roles of director, writer, producer, cinematographer, editor, composer, production designer, costume designer, casting director and assistant director.
The second Inclusion List also names 25 top achievers across inclusion metrics and 50 new winners for 2023 cinema. Released Jan. 22, the results calls attention to directors, editors and distributors involved in projects with the highest percentage of women and people of color employees who aided in the process of production from start to finish line.

Eight editors were noted for their work in film over the past five years, including Annette Davey, Anne McCabe, Blair McClendon, Catrin Hedström, Hilda Rasula, Harry Yoon, Mary Jo Markey.

The top distributors — companies responsible for bringing top-ranking diverse films to audiences — were listed by the quantity of how many films released: Universal (29), Sony Pictures (21), Warner Bros (18) and, for smaller distributors, A24 (14), MGM (10) and Bleecker Street (9).
A panel discussing the results featuring Smith, Sumi Parekh, Executive Director, Group Effort Initiative, Tracy Oliver, Screenwriter, Director, Producer and Showrunner, Jesse Williams, Actor, Director, Activist, Dewayne Perkins, Writer, Actor, Producer, and Amy White, Global Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, Adobe, is set for Friday at Adobe House on the ground at the Sundance Film Festival.

Veteran actor Stanley Tucci is enjoying more success with his latest role in the acclaimed movie Conclave. However, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans may still remember him fondly from his role in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011.
Per Variety, Tucci took a moment to reflect on his time spent playing Abraham Erskine in the first Captain America movie. He first commented on appearing Harry Macqueen's indie movie Supernova, noting how he felt "sad" for the director after the "extraordinary" film didn't get the awards recognition it deserved. Getting overlooked is something that often happens with more independent films, though Tucci also knows what it's like to feature in big-budget blockbusters in the vein of the McU's superhero movies. While Tucci still feels that his MCU role is one of the best jobs he's ever had, he also admits it was "disturbing" to be cast as a character 20 years older than his real age.

We are living in the golden age of the rock biopic. Until very recently, films like The Doors, Ray, Walk the Line, and Love and Mercy popped up only once every few years. But in roughly the past half-decade alone, we’ve seen Bohemian Rhapsody, Bob Marley: One Love, Back to Black, Rocketman, Respect, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and Elvis. This past Christmas, we got the story of Bob Dylan, A Complete Unknown, and Better Man, in which an anthropomorphic chimpanzee “plays” Robbie Williams. And in the coming months and years,...

As a singer, Whitney Houston needs no introduction. As a Christmas movie star, though, she may come across as somewhat more obscure. Despite this, she found success on that avenue of life as well. Not only did she star in the surprisingly good 1996 Christmas film "The Preacher's Wife," but she also did so opposite the great Denzel Washington, and earned plenty of money for her efforts.
A remake of the 1947 film "The Bishop's Wife" (itself based on the 1928 book of the same name), "The Preacher's Wife" is a fantasy comedy-drama about Henry Biggs (Courtney B. Vance), a stressed-out reverend who's going through a crisis of faith while his church is standing in the way of a real estate mogul's (Gregory Hines) construction project. Fortunately, an angel named Dudley (Washington) and Biggs' wife Julia (Houston) are there to support the preacher. Unfortunately, it seems that the two are also falling in love.

As part of Apple TV+ and Apple Music’s A Carpool Karaoke Christmas, Chappell Roan and her parents Kara and Dwight joined host Zane Lowe for a special SUV sing-a-long of her song “Pink Pony Club” on Sunday night.
The segment featured Lowe driving Roan and her parents around rural Missouri in an SUV, complete with Christmas decorations strewn about the car. As Lowe played “Pink Pony Club,” Roan and her parents sang along, with the latter two getting emotional — especially during lines that reference her midwestern family.
After the song concluded, her parents discussed its impact. “That song… I love singing it with her at her shows, I love it when you can just see the people respond to that song so much,” commented her mother Kara. “Even when we’re growing up, we really care about what our parents think of us… I hope that’s something that she always knows,...

The Duffer Brothers’ “Stranger Things” is coming back next year. And we have some new details.
As part of Stranger Things Day, the annual celebration of all things Hawkins, Indiana that coincides with the day that Will Bowers disappeared, Netflix announced when the new season will take place, and crucially, the titles for the final eight episodes of the beloved series. Watch the teaser below and we will break it down.
“In the fall of 1987,” the teaser states, “one last adventure begins.” (There had been speculation that the final season would take place at Christmas – could it be so epic that it stretches from the fall to the winter?) Interestingly, 1987 was the year of “The Lost Boys,” “Spaceballs,” “Robocop,” “Adventures in Babysitting” and “Batteries Not Included” – all, undoubtedly, hallmarks for the series. Some of the top 10 songs from that year included “Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody...

Naomi Ackie takes on the difficult task of portraying the late, great Whitney Houston, but does Naomi Ackie sing in Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody? Directed by Kasi Lemmons from a screenplay by Anthony McCarten, the Whitney Houston biopic has all the genre trappings, but its Ackies performance as the chart-topping singer that really sells the story. As with most music biopics, I Wanna Dance With Somebody tells the true story of an icon beloved by countless fans.
There is obviously a lot of pressure on the movie to get certain aspects right and that is especially true of the actor tasked with playing someone who most of the audience already knows so well. With this being Ackie's breakout performance, she had a lot to live up to in playing Whitney Houston and recreating her most famous singing performances. While some actors in biopics do their own singing,...

Netflix has an ever-changing content library, meaning that while some great new titles arrive, some key shows and movies are leaving in October 2024. Since its inception, Netflix has positioned itself as the preeminent streaming service, and they were one of the first to delve into the world of original content, including the arrival of hit films like Rebel Ridge and the popular series The Perfect Couple last month. However, the streamer also has a great reputation for hosting other content, and they are a one-stop-shop for everything from classic series to some of Hollywood's biggest films.
Netflix alters its lineup every month, and many shows and movies on Netflix have a limited time on the platform. September 2024 saw the platform losing some high-profile titles, including the complete series of How to Get Away with Murder, the horror-comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies, and the original Beverly Hills Cop. Jeremy Allen White says his Bruce Springsteen prep has involved a lot of YouTube rabbit holes — with some advice from the real-life rockstar peppered in.
White will play Springsteen in 20th Century and Disney’s Deliver Me From Nowhere. News of the movie’s production picked up earlier this spring, and the star of The Bear is now deep in preparation for the legendary role.
“I’m really lucky that there’s sort of a team of folks now in place to help young actors portray rock stars,” White told GQ. “I’ve got a really talented group of people helping me train vocally, musically, to get ready for this thing.”
In recent years, Austin Butler portrayed Elvis in Elvis, Rami Malek played Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, Naomi Ackie played Whitney Houston in Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Kingsley Ben-Adir played Bob Marley in Bob Marley: One Love.

Pussy Island was the original title of Blink Twice, reflecting a deeper narrative of abuse and power dynamics on the private island. Zo Kravitz wanted to reclaim the word but faced push back from studios and viewers, leading to the title change. The film delves into the dark truth behind Slater's private island, highlighting the character's sense of entitlement.
Before settling on Blink Twice, Zo Kravitz had a different working title for her directorial debut. A psychological crime thriller, Blink Twice stars Naomi Ackie (I Wanna Dance With Somebody) as Frida, a down-on-her-luck cocktail waitress and aspiring nail artist, and Channing Tatum (Magic Mike) as Slater King, a billionaire tech mogul who recently retreated from the public eye after being called out on his inappropriate behavior. The film doesn't dwell on what he did, but it does take pains to show that Slater learned from his "cancelation" by seeking out therapy and buying an island.

New voices emerge in cinema every year, and sometimes, these voices aren’t entirely unfamiliar. It’s becoming increasingly common for actors to turn into filmmakers and try their luck behind the camera. Zoë Kravitz (The Batman) is the latest courageous artist with a desire to bring her ideas to the screen for the first time in Blink Twice, also contributing to the screenplay alongside E.T. Feigenbaum (High Fidelity). With an interesting cast led by Naomi Ackie (Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody) and Channing Tatum (Magic Mike Xxl), alongside well-known names like Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) and Adria Arjona (Hit Man), Blink Twice has a wealth of talent at its disposal.
The story centers on billionaire Slater King (Tatum) and his spontaneous encounter with Frida (Ackie), a waitress at his fundraising gala. After a night filled with chemistry between the protagonists, King invites Frida to join him and...

Naomi Ackie fondly remembers filming late-night dance montages with her Blink Twice castmates in Yucatán, Mexico. As the Dixie Cups’ island-inflected version of “Iko Iko” blared, the actors, covered in glitter, frolicked, squealed, and cheesed into the camera. But in this nightmarish thriller (out Aug. 23), which marks Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut, the party scenes hide something much darker. Channing Tatum’s tech billionaire Slater invites strangers to his private island for a hedonistic bacchanal — and every morning, the female guests wake up with a wiped memory, mystery bruises, and dirt under their nails.

Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut, Blink Twice, boasts an ensemble cast led by Naomi Ackie (I Wanna Dance with Somebody), Channing Tatum, Alia Shawkat (Search Party), Adria Arjona, Christian Slater (Mr. Robot), and Haley Joel Osment.
The film follows Frida (Ackie), a cocktail waitress who gets swept into the glamorous yet eerie world of tech billionaire Slater King (Tatum). Invited to his private island under the guise of a luxurious getaway, Frida soon realises that nothing is as it seems. As the idyllic setting turns sinister, Frida must unravel the truth behind the mysterious events and the true intentions of her seemingly charming host.
Much like Get Out, Blink Twice uses the horror genre to explore deeper societal issues. While Jordan Peele’s film dealt with race relations in a post-Obama America, Kravitz’s film delves into themes that resonate in the #MeToo era, such as the exploitation of...

Zoë Kravitz makes her directorial debut with a shocking thriller starring Naomi Ackie and Channing Tatum. Here’s our Blink Twice review.
About 40 minutes into Blink Twice, Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut, I was thinking I was watching a three star film. It was perfectly fine, good performances, but I kept thinking something was missing. Then, without warning, the film took a complete turn and I was hooked. I can’t remember another film that gave me that level of cinematic whiplash.
Let’s back up a little. Blink Twice stars Naomi Ackie as Frida, a cocktail waitress bored of her unremarkable life. Frida and her best friend Jess (Alia Shawkat) work at an event for tech mogul Slater King (Channing Tatum) and Frida makes friends with Slater, with whom she’s smitten. Slater invites the two women to his private island for sun-soaked days and drug-filled party nights.

Zo Kravitz's Blink Twice boasts a star-studded cast with Oscar, Emmy, and Golden Globe winners. The film, directed by Kravitz, follows Frida, a cocktail waitress, on a vacation where things go wrong. Key cast members include Naomi Ackie, Channing Tatum, Adria Arjona, and Alia Shawkat in pivotal roles.
Zo Kravitz's directorial debut Blink Twice boasts a great cast playing various characters. Zo Kravitz wrote and directed the original psychological thriller. Released on August 23, 2024, Blink Twice follows a cocktail waitress as she joins a wealthy tech mogul on his private island for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation. All the glamour begins to fade away when things start to go wrong on the island, leading the main character, Frida, to grow increasingly concerned about her and others' safety.
Although Zo Kravitz does not have an on-screen role that anyone who watches Blink Twice will see, she use her directorial debut as a chance to...

“Blink Twice” opens with a blurry close-up shot of a frog, which then comes into glistening focus. The sound is eerie; the image is sinister, fascinating, mysterious and trippy. That describes the movie as well. “Blink Twice” is the first feature directed by Zoë Kravitz, who also co-wrote it (with E.T. Feigenbaum), and it’s a post-#MeToo feminist party-girl nightmare thriller that’s been made with an unusual sense of intimacy. Kravitz, the veteran actor, doesn’t rely on the standard medium shot/Pov pedestrian film grammar. She composes the movie out of vibrant close-ups, using each shot to tell a story, drawing us into the center of an encounter, so that we’re staring at it and experiencing it at the same time. Her technique is riveting; this is the work of a born filmmaker.
I wouldn’t call “Blink Twice” a horror movie, but it’s rooted in some pretty horrifying things.

Deadline has reported today that the Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown will adapt her world-renowned debut novel Nineteen Steps for Netflix. She will star in the movie, which Brown will also reportedly produce under her own Pcma Productions banner. Adapting the feature will be the four-time Oscar-nominated writer/producer Anthony McCarten, while Jonathan Eirich and Nick Reynolds respectively serve as a producer and executive producer for Rideback.
Netflix and Brown are no strangers (excuse the pun!) to each other, as Brown gained worldwide fame with her breakthrough role as Eleven in the international phenomenon Stranger Things, which will return to the streaming service for its fifth and final season next year. After that, Brown starred in Netflix movies such as Damsel and Enola Holmes and appeared in blockbusters such as Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Their next significant collaboration will be the Russo Brothers The Electric State,...

Exclusive: Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) is developing Nineteen Steps, a feature adaptation of her same-name debut novel for Netflix, sources tell Deadline.
Netflix declined comment. But we hear that Brown will produce under her Pcma banner, with an eye to star. Four-time Oscar nominee Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything) is set to adapt the screenplay. Jonathan Eirich will produce for Rideback, with Nick Reynolds exec producing for the company.
A New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller published by William Morrow in September 2023, Nineteen Steps is a WWII novel drawing on the experiences of Brown’s own grandmother. Written by Brown and Kathleen McGurl, the story follows Nellie Morris, an 18-year-old girl living in the East London neighborhood of Bethnal Green. Over the course of the book, Nellie navigates the challenges of wartime life, including the threat of bombings, rationing, and the emotional turmoil of being separated from loved ones,...
