Sex & Nudity

  • A man mentions that his late wife was an "exotic dancer" (a girl asks if that means she was a stripper).
  • It is hinted at that a girl's mother had a child after a one-night stand.
  • There is no sex or nudity in the film, although there are a couple of brief, subtle references.

Violence & Gore

  • A girl steals a basketball, after which she is beaten up by a group of boys.
  • It is implied that a younger child was abused at his former household; he flinches when characters raise a broom or a hand, believing that they are going to hit him.
  • A boy is kicked in the shin. A girl jokes that he will receive a "wicked bruise" later on.
  • It is mentioned that a woman's son was killed in a war.
  • A man gets into a mild car accident (played for comedy; the man is not hurt, although the car is damaged).
  • An overweight woman falls on top of a girl and passes gas. The girl has to roll her off and aid her in standing up again.
  • A boy is shoved into a locker by a girl.
  • A girl threatens to cut out another girl's tongue.
  • It is said (jokingly) that a boy got into a fight, and that the boy was "scuffed up a bit" but otherwise unharmed.

Profanity

  • A girl writes a poem to her teacher which leaves a blank space rhyming with "figure" (for "n*gger", the teacher points out verbally). The teacher is visibly upset by the word.
  • A woman passes gas. A boy vomits next to a toilet.
  • Several uses of "God", "oh my God", "damn", "hell" and similar religious expletives.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A woman asks her adult daughter if she is drunk or high during an airport visit.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The scenes which include school bullying can be quite cruel and intense, including a girl being beaten up, boys getting kicked and mocked, a nerd being shoved around and called "loaf" (a nickname he does not want), and a girl being threatened and pushed.
  • Gilly's racial poem to her teacher may offend some viewers.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There are quite a few upsetting scenes where Gilly is forced to move, to confront her deadbeat mother, and where she fears that her foster brother will be removed from the household.
  • Gilly steals her blind neighbour's money, as well as money from her foster mother. She then runs away to a bus station and buys a large amount of candy, after which she is arrested by the police.
