Why do you go to see films? For most people, it’s first and foremost about entertainment, but films can also be educational, they can transport us to far off places and they can change our perspectives on the world around us. Mental Health In Movies is a project which aims to use this to improve people’s lives. It was started by Dan Warrender and Scott Macpherson, two mental health nurses from Aberdeen who wanted to find a new way of connecting with their local community and helping people at the same time as sharing an enjoyable experience. They were happy to talk about how it developed and what they learned along the way.
Readers should be aware that this interview touches on some quite sensitive topics, but both Dan and Scott felt it...

Commonly known as a lieu that breeds new filmmaking talents, Caitlin Coder, Jordan M. Smith, Nicholas Bell and I had the pleasure of uncovering/discovering a new batch of filmmaker talents (here is last year’s list). Here are our Top 20 New Voices countdown:
#20. Tessa Louise-Salome (Mr. Leos Carax)
Described as a work in progress, documentarian Tessa Louise-Salome continues her fascination with Leos Carax in this debut. A look at the mysterious and alluring director, we are guided through his scant but magnificent filmography with snippets and clips, while she interviews several cast members of his works, including Denis Lavant and Kylie Minogue, as well as Harmony Korine, who had cast Carax in his 2007 film, Mister Lonely. While we never quite get to learn anything more about the man known as Leos Carax, it’s a welcome substitute for the aficionados and fans that wish he would work more frequently.

TNT has picked up the U.S. rights to "Transporter: The Series," an international action drama based on the Luc Besson-produced film franchise about meticulous, skilled driver-for-hire Frank Martin, played by Jason Statham. British actor Chris Vance, who played "freelance psychopath" Mason Gilroy on "Burn Notice" and Dr. Jack Gallagher on "Mental," the short-lived 2009 Fox series set in L.A. but shot in Bogotá, stars as the small screen incarnation of Frank. François Berléand, reprising his role from the films as Inspector Tarconi, is also in the cast, alongside Andrea Osvárt, Delphine Chanéac and Charly Hübner. "Transporter: The Series" is a French-Canadian production, and was originally slated to air in the U.S. on Cinemax, though they ended up passing on the project -- a trailer that was released at the time but has since been taken down didn't look particularly promising. The first season has since aired in Canada,...

With all the unexpected movies we've seen being adapted for the small screen as of late, Luc Besson's The Transporter is one that actually seems quite well-suited for television. The original trilogy was comprised of no-nonsense action flicks made on a fairly limited budget and the premise is one that lends itself well to an episodic format. Cinemax has been in production on the first season of Transporter: The Series since last year, but they ran into a number of problems after the original showrunners left and the lead actor injured himself during an action sequence. That lead actor is not Jason Statham unfortunately, but rather Chris Vance, who is best known for roles on Prison Break and Mental. He seems to be back in action as the first trailer for the show has arrived online, and although it definitely looks like a step down from the films,...

A new mayor is about to take office on Castle.
TV Line reports that Derek Webster (Mental, Damages, Harry's Law) will take over the character of NYC's top politician, Robert Weldon, a role portrayed by Joseph C. Phillips during a pair of season one episodes.
Look for Weldon to take on more of an active role in early 2012, though exactly in what way is unclear. But it will likely center around the mayor's long-time friendship with a certain sarcastic author, along with an upcoming scandal that may bring down Weldon's career.
Castle is off tonight, but returns with a new, intriguing episode next Monday. View its official preview Now.

Castle has elected a new mayor.
Damages‘ Derek Webster is taking over the role of Robert Weldon, the show’s (fictional) New York City Mayor, sources confirm to TVLine exclusively.
He replaces General Hospital grad Joseph C. Phillips, who previously played the Big Apple’s top politico in two Season 1 episodes.
The role will be beefed up considerably under Webster (who also starred in the short-lived Fox drama Mental). For starters, producers are mining the character’s pivotal backstory — namely his longstanding friendship with Castle (Nathan Fillion) — in a major way.
As you know, it was Weldon’s political clout...

In Hollywood there is nothing more terrifying than an original idea. It’s a fear born from the unknown, fear that audiences won’t get it, fear that it won’t do ‘good business.’ For nervous studio executives, both the movie franchise and the remake are a reassuring comfort blanket. These are movies that already have a guaranteed audience and producers can relax in the knowledge that the same idea has made money before.
Rob Zombie’s Halloween (2007) is in the rare position of being both a franchise movie and a direct remake of John Carpenter’s 1978 classic. That Zombie’s film raked in a massive $30.6 million on its opening weekend is hardly surprising. Nor should it be surprising that the film is a mess – lacking originality, insight, and, worst of all, scares. The sequel released in 2009 is even worse.
But fans of the original have little reason to complain.

Before we begin, let's provide a bit of background for those just tuning in to the show.
For the uninitiated, W13 is a top secret facility in South Dakota which houses rare and dangerous artifacts, such as Lewis Carroll's looking glass, Robin Hood's crossbow, and Michele Bachmann's brain stem.
Secret Service Agents Myka Bering (Joanne Kelly) and Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) are assigned to retrieve the supernatural items, with help from Warehouse director Mrs. Frederic (Cch Pounder), agent-in-charge Artie (Saul Rubinek), and hot flame-haired tech geek Claudia (Allison Scagliotti).
This season also saw the debut of new agent Steve Jinks (Aaron Ashmore), who has the ability to tell when someone is lying, and is the first recurring gay character on Syfy since Caprica's Sam Adama.
This week's episode of Warehouse 13 once again relegates Steve to the "B" story, which is fine, since it's more entertaining than the "A" story.

When MGM was going through its financial crisis their Red Dawn remake got put on the back burner. At one point the movie got delayed indefinitely after the script for the film leaked out and they had no idea if the movie would ever get released. The script leak caused a controversy because of how it portrayed the Chinese. The Beijing-based Global Times had this to say at the time, "U.S. reshoots Cold War movie to demonize China" and "American movie plants hostile seeds against China." One commentary had this to say,
Despite the world's focus on U.S.-China relations in the strategic and economic dialogue and their increasing economic connections, China can still feel U.S. distrust and fear, especially among its people. Americans' suspicions about China are the best ground for the hawks to disseminate fear and doubt, which is the biggest concern with the movie 'Red Dawn'.

“I didn’t wear a bra for three months,” said actress Marisa Ramirez while talking about just one facet of her upcoming role on the Starz six-part series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. And what a role she has (braless or not) on the highly touted prequel to Blood & Sand, playing "body slave" to none other than Lucy Lawless’s Lucretia.
After spending three months filming in New Zealand, the Los Angeles-based actress (who played gay in the 2009 Fox series Mental) told AfterEllen, com all about the intricacies of being a body slave, the challenges of wearing very skimpy outfits, how at times she couldn’t help but stare at the gorgeous Lawless and how she thinks Hollywood is doing with gay representation these days.

It's hard to believe, but this is what I'm doing with my Saturday night. It won't be as bad as The Client List (it's can't be. Please, God, don't let it be worse than The Client List), but it's not gonna be good. Once again, additional commentary is provided by Mrs. Tk. And we are joined by one surly cat named Little Man and one mildly retarded one named Desmond.
Let's rock.

Wait, no, I'm wrong. Sharktopus sighting already, and it just fucked up a great white shark.

Like anyone else who didn’t have Showtime last year, I found out about Rita’s death before I actually watched it. So when I spent a weekend watching the season 4 — with the knowledge of her gruesome demise tucked away in my mind — I considered myself prepared. To my surprise, when I actually watched it, it was as though I had read absolutely nothing about it.
My stomach tensed, I covered my mouth so as to prevent others around me from seeing my stupid shock-filled face, and I got goosebumps. “I knew it was happening; why did I react this way!

Pulling out all the stops this season, Dexter has nagged mega-superstar Chris Vance, who played Whistler on the third season of Prison Break, to guest star over the course of three episodes.
Now, I know we all watched the third season of Prison Break (you know, the one where they were back behind bars, in an entirely different prison than the first prison), but just in case you didn’t, Whistler was a key member of the cast. His shifting loyalties and hidden agenda propelled most of the plot, and reinvigorated a show that had lost relevance since, oh, I don’t know, the first episode.
In the upcoming season of Dexter, Vance will play “a meticulous, physically fit, well-spoken personal aide to a famous businessman,” according to EW.com. So there’s one of three possibilities there:
1) Vance will end up chopped into tiny bits.

Hit the jump to learn more information and see the image and promo. If you haven't seen the fourth season of the series, obviously, beware of spoilers. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Prison Break star Chris Vance (who played James Whistler) has signed on for a multi-episode arc on the upcoming fifth season of the Showtime television series Dexter. The British actor is also known for playing Sean Everleigh on the tv series All Saints, and more recently Jack Gallagher on Mental and Mason Gilroy on Burn Notice. When Dexter returns to Showtime late next month, there will be a whole slew of new faces. We've previously reported that the likes of Julia Stiles, Peter Weller and Jonny Lee Miller will be lending their talents to the show, but EW has reported that actor Chris Vance is the latest to join. Per the report, the Prison Break alum will play Cole, "a meticulous, physically fit, well-spoken personal aide to a famous businessman." Of course this doesn't tell much when it comes to storyline. But Vance did a great job in recent Fox series Mental as well as in Burn Notice as a nemesis to Michael Westen. As of now, it appears that the actor will be around for three episodes. Dexter returns Sunday, September 26 on Showtime.

Welcome to your Tuesday morning television briefing. Sometimes the networks taketh and sometimes they give back. Deadline's Nellie Andreeva is reporting that HBO has had a change of heart about animated comedy The Life and Times of Tim, which it cancelled two months ago. The pay cabler has now reversed its position on the cult hit, ordering a third season of Tim, with ten episodes slated to air sometime next year. Media Rights Capital, the production company behind the project (along with Good Humor TV), attempted to shop Tim to other networks--including Comedy Central, Adult Swim, and TBS--but no buyer materialized... and now the project has headed back to HBO. [Editor: I'm relieved as I was really upset when I heard earlier this year that the series wasn't going to get picked up.] (Deadline) Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting that Chris Vance (Prison Break) has been cast in a multiple-episode story arc on Season Five of Showtime's Dexter. Vance--most recently seen in Fox's short-lived drama series Mental and on Burn Notice--will play Cole,...

"Dexter" isn't done casting its slew of guest stars ... and pool of possible killers.
Chris Vance, who had starred in Fox's short-lived "Mental," has joined the fifth season of "Dexter," Showtime reps confirm to Zap2it. The news was first reported by EW.
Warning: Spoilers may lurk below if you haven't watched Season 4 yet.
Vance, also of "Prison Break" and "Burn Notice," joins the already packed season of guest stars that includes Julia Stiles, Peter Weller, Shawn Hatosy, Jonny Lee Miller and Katherine Moening.
Could any of these be a rival for Dexter (Michael C. Hall) in the killing department? It's actually possible that more than one may be joining in the killing games. In a Comic-Con interview, writer-executive producer Chip Johannesson had said, "We wanted to get away from the single serial killer," although the show won't devolve into a "killer of the week" format.

When "Mental's" Marisa Ramirez landed one of the top roles on the "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" prequel, "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," she was surprised and grateful.
"I think it's so amazing for me to come from East La and audition for a role with an English accent and actually get the job! They were seeing people from England, South Africa, everywhere and little home girl gets it," she tells critic Jim Halterman.
Ramirez will be playing Melitta. "Melitta is a body slave to Lucretia, who is Lucy Lawless's character," she says. "I don't know what a body slave is but I'm going to find out!"
If the term "body slave" makes you think of nakedness, you're not alone. Ramirez says, "I think there's definitely going to be some [nudity] with a show like this and it'll be hard to be modest because they were naked in those times!

White Collar’s Mozzie, character actor Willie Garson, stopped his shoots on White Collar Season 2, which airs tomorrow (Tuesday July 13, 2010) on USA at 9/8c, to talk to me about the upcoming season of the hit series and he also talked about the Season 1 Blu-ray which is also getting released tomorrow.
Garson has been all over the small and big screen in a variety of roles. He has appeared in over 50 movies, usually playing minor roles but is best known to many for playing the lovable Stanford Blatch on the HBO series Sex and the City.
Garson also had a major recurring role as Henry Coffield on NYPD Blue which lead to his career turn into other TV appearances that include Mr. Belvedere, My Two Dads, Quantum Leap, Monk, Boy Meets World, Ally McBeal, Party of Five, Star Trek: Voyager, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Friends, The X-Files, Yes, Dear, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,...

The Los Angeles Mission will make a difference for the homeless this Easter – with a little help from celebrity friends.
The Mission will serve 3,000 meals, provide Easter baskets with toys for children, and wash the feet of the homeless on Good Friday. Why feet washing? Easter Week foot washing is a Christian tradition – memorializing that Jesus washed the feet of his disciples the night before he was crucified. Many who are on the streets seldom have normal loving human contact – and this outreach of food, foot washing with podiatric care and new shoes is a way of inviting them to learn about the Mission’s services, including its long term program of restoration – in order to get off the streets permanently. The Los Angeles Christian Health Center uses this opportunity to address the foot problems suffered by many on the streets of Skid Row.

After a disappointing run last summer, Fox has quietly cancelled their Mental TV series.
Mental follows the work of an unorthodox psychiatrist who becomes the Director of Mental Health at a fictional Los Angeles hospital. Created by Dan LeVine and co-executive produced by his sister, Deborah Joy LeVine, the series stars Chris Vance, Annabella Sciorra, Derek Webster, Jacqueline McKenzie, Marisa Ramirez, Nicholas Gonzalez, Warren Kole, and Edwin Hodge.
The series debuted in late May with 5.8 million viewers and a 2.1/5 rating/share in the 18-49 demographic. Those numbers put the series in third place for the timeslot. The numbers fell significantly after that, and episodes sometimes attracted less than half of the viewers as the premiere.
Some of the Mental castmembers have already moved on to other TV projects. Vance has had a recurring role on USA's Burn Notice.

The British actor's four-episode arc as Gilroy is set to begin this Thursday, playing a sophisticated and ruthless former Mi-6 agent who oversees freelance black ops. Vance was on Prison Break prior to Mental.

If there’s any show that drives me absolutely crazy, Mental is the one. I’ll admit, I’d never seen it before, and I thought the premise might make for some excellent television. The basis is that Dr. Jack Gallagher (played by Prison Break’s Chris Vance) has been appointed as the Director of Mental Health Services at an La hospital despite having an incredibly unconventional way of dealing with his patients. Unfortunately for him, his boss is also his ex-lover, Nora Skoff (played by Annabella Sciora of Law and Order: Criminal Intent), and is super conventional. Even worse, most of the staff dislikes him from the beginning as Dr. Veronica Hayden-Jones (Jacqueline McKenzie) is bitter he got the job instead of her and they all think he is crazy. Sounds interesting, right?
It should be awesome, but it’s really not. At times I found it unbearable to watch.

We just received word straight from director Darren Lynn Bousman on the latest addition to his Mother's Day cast. Actor Warren Kole will portray Addley, one of two hillbilly punks who – in Charles Kaufman's original 1980 Troma exploitation classic – are encouraged by their sadistic Mother to rape and murder young women. Kole previously starred in Larry Cohen's Masters of Horror episode "Pick Me Up", and had recurring roles in 24 and Mental. Mother – as we previously reported – will of course be played by the very milfy Rebecca DeMornay, who will be joined by True Blood's Deborah Ann Woll, Sorority Row's Briana Evigan, and My Bloody Valentine 3-D's Jaime...

The latest installment, an August 28 release entitled The Final Destination, has real promise. It's directed by David R. And there are kills a-plenty, as Nick (Campo) experiences a premonition that saves him and his pals (Shantel VanSanten, Nick Zano, Haley Webb) from certain death at a racetrack, only to have certain death hunt them down one by one by one and dispatch them in nasty and goopy ways. Campo is the star of the show,...

"Mental" is drawing close to the first season finale and the last two episodes will feature two very disturbed patients. This Friday, August 14, a factory worker got his fingers chopped off but there is a possibility that it was not a pure accident. Also, a man believes that he will transform into a werewolf in the next full moon.
In "Life and Limb", Jack has to argue with Carl whether they should sew back the fingers of Brian Jennings or heal his mental condition. Brian in fact refuses any type of surgery and his boss claims that Brian has purposely cut off his fingers to collect disability payments for the rest of his life. The doctors are soon left questioning the true motives for his dismemberment when an even darker secret is discovered at Brian's apartment. Alex Weed guest stars as Brian.
