Sidse Babett Knudsen went “completely visceral” in Gustav Möller’s prison drama “Sons,” premiering in Berlinale’s main competition.
“My approach was almost animalistic. That’s how she felt to me. She doesn’t know how to live: she has resigned into someone who can just survive,” says the acclaimed “Borgen” and “Westworld” actor who plays Eva, a prison guard with a secret.
“This environment matches her psychological state, driven by grief and guilt. Eva believes she is invisible. When people actually ask her questions, it takes an unnatural amount of time for her to respond. She can only function within these restricted walls, trying to give these inmates some kindness.”
When she spots a young inmate connected to her past, she immediately asks to be transferred to his block. A complex relationship forms, but Mikkel (Sebastian Bull) doesn’t know all about Eva.

Apple TV Plus has just scored its most-watched weekend since the 15-month-old service launched, according to company insiders.
Powered by the premiere of “Palmer,” a drama starring Justin Timberlake from director Fisher Stevens, the streaming service saw a 33% increase over average viewers — also due to available sophomore seasons of M. Night Shyamalan’s “Servant” and “Dickinson.,” as well as big international numbers for “Losing Alice.”
Timberlake’s movie, about an ex-con who finds himself the caretaker of a gender-nonconforming child, rated as the second-biggest feature film launch for the service, run by Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht. The project was co-financed and produced by Sk Global. Definitive streaming numbers were not available.
The viewership numbers come off of Apple’s major score at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend, where they emerged the winner of a rich bidding war for “Coda,” the festival sensation that broke sales records at a $25 million price tag.

Right now, the big question that is being asked around the film industry is how studios will adapt to the new Covid-19 safety protocols and if films will resemble what they did pre-pandemic? While we don’t have the answers to that just yet, we do know that folks are starting to adapt to the new protocols with creative projects that allow for a small cast and not many locations. And that’s just what Jake Gyllenhaal and director Antoine Fuqua are doing for their upcoming film, “The Guilty.”

The Tom Hanks WWII thriller “Greyhound” was meant to open theatrically through Sony, but it wound up with a big opening weekend with its premiere on Apple TV+ on July 10.
The film starring and written by Hanks and directed by Aaron Schneider broke the viewership record for an Apple TV+ original film in its opening weekend, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap, and 30% of the viewers of “Greyhound” were, in fact, new to the service.
No specific viewership numbers were disclosed, and it’s unclear what titles it beat out for the opening weekend record. This year Apple TV+ has so far debuted “The Banker” and the documentaries “Beastie Boys Story” and “Dads.”

Exclusive: Apple’s WWII drama Greyhound, starring and written by Tom Hanks, has become the largest opening-weekend release ever for Apple TV+, including series that have bowed on the service, sources close to Apple tell Deadline. The streamer is loathe in giving up exact numbers, but I’m told the film turned in a viewing audience commensurate with a summer theatrical box office big hit, which of course Greyhound was meant to be until it moved from Sony to Apple because of the uncertainty of movie theaters after Covid-19.
Beyond generating the largest opening weekend ever for Apple TV+, 30% of its viewers were new to the service. The film debuted last Friday.
