Quotes

  • Ed Lane : Don't handbook me, dude!

  • Mike Scarlatti : [regarding the broken Air Conditioner in the building]  I'm dying already.

Ed Lane : Want me to write you a note? Get you out of class?

Mike Scarlatti : Could ya? Would ya, Officer Lane?

  • Ed Lane : Danny, we are not playing chess here, now. You're thinking about a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

  • Ed Lane : [to Daniel who is threatening suicide]  Danny, Danny, don't do it! Don't do it!

Kevin 'Wordy' Wordsworth : Danny, put the gun down!

Sgt. Gregory Parker : Danny! Michelle's here!

    Michelle Rangford : Daniel.

Daniel Rangford : Michelle? What are you doing? You can't be here. Get out of here! You shouldn't be here!

Michelle Rangford : I'm not going anywhere, Daniel!

Daniel Rangford : Get her out of here!

Michelle Rangford : I'm not going anywhere!

Daniel Rangford : Don't make me do this in front of her!

  • Sgt. Gregory Parker : Okay, know the subject, anticipate the weapon, target the solution. What kind of person plants a bomb in a public place?

Ed Lane : Organized personality, not impulsive, not mentally incompetent.

Sgt. Gregory Parker : Emotionally detached, above-average intelligence.

Ed Lane : Access to volatile material and familiar with its use.

Sgt. Gregory Parker : Yeah, and who wants to strike the city's transportation hub.

Ed Lane : Or just doesn't like tourists.

  • Ed Lane : That little girl down by the dock. You remember her? She was turning blue. She could hardly breathe and you did mouth-to-mouth on her in the ambulance, all the way to the hospital. Buddy, you saved her life.

Sgt. Gregory Parker : You stayed with her the whole time and then they called from the hospital...

Daniel Rangford : To say, "Congratulations. She's gonna live."

Ed Lane : Danny, you got the Silver Shield for that, buddy.

Daniel Rangford : Proudest freakin' nine seconds of my career. 'Cause then they give you the punch line, which is something we don't tell the rookies, hmm? About how the girl was brain-damaged from lack of oxygen. Oh, yeah, she's going to live, like a vegetable shriveling up until her family decides to pull the plug, put her out of her misery. Which I got to say, seems to be a good idea right about now.

  • Ed Lane : Danny, you can't do this! You can't do this without... without telling us why!

Daniel Rangford : I know. I know... about a kid sitting on the floor. I went back. He didn't look any different from the last time I saw him. His eyes are open, he's looking at me, baseball cards spread around him. But he's real quiet. He's real still and I'm thinking, "Why is he so still? Why? Why doesn't he say, 'Hi?'" Then I see it. He had a screwdriver buried into his throat. And I put it there.

Sgt. Gregory Parker : You didn't put it there, Danny. Criminals put it there.

Daniel Rangford : If I hadn't been called there, I wouldn't have said that to him.

Sgt. Gregory Parker : [quoting what he discovered he had told the boy]  "You gotta be brave for your sisters."

Daniel Rangford : If it wasn't me, he... he would have lived.

Sgt. Gregory Parker : You don't know that, buddy.

[Daniel grunts and makes a sound with his gun]

    Sgt. Gregory Parker : Danny.

[Ed starts to get emotional fighting his own tears]

Daniel Rangford : I spent my whole career screwing up. Being too late, being to... early, not saying the right words. I spent my whole career looking at the worst 20 minutes of other people's lives, and I can't take it anymore.

Sgt. Gregory Parker : Danny, how about remembering the good stuff? The good stuff - all the lives you saved, all the people whose lives were made better, their lives were made longer because you were there for those 20 minutes!

Daniel Rangford : I can't remember, you see?

[hits himself in the head several times with his hand]

Daniel Rangford : I can't remember! I can't remember! All I see are the ghosts. All I got are the ghosts, the ghosts. And I can't take it anymore.

[points his gun at Ed again who points his back]

    Michelle Rangford : Daniel!

Daniel Rangford : Eddie... please. Please help me.

    [Ed shakes his head]

Daniel Rangford : Pull the plug... Pull the plug.

    Ed Lane : Okay, Wordy.

[pushes Wordy who is holding the shieled out of the way then takes the clip out of his gun and holds them up]

    Daniel Rangford : No!

    Ed Lane : Okay?

[he sets the gun and clip on the floor and kneels down]

Ed Lane : Danny, this, this isn't about Jeremy. These guys think it's all about him, but it's more than that. Isn't it? Jeremy's just... who you always think about.

    [takes off his jacket]

Ed Lane : I get it.

[takes out his ear piece then takes off his bulletproof vest and rubs his head]

Ed Lane : I get it. You know what, buddy?

    [stands back up]

Ed Lane : Every time... Every time I look at a damn scope... I see a kid run across. I see a spray of blood. You know what else, Danny? You know what else I see?

    [starts to unbutton his shirt]

Ed Lane : All the calls we didn't get to in time.

    [Daniel nods]

Ed Lane : The mothers that we couldn't talk down. The kid who thought it'd be fun to... pull a gun on a cop. You're not the only one who sees ghosts, Danny. I got to tell you, I don't know where to put them anymore either.

Daniel Rangford : Eddie, please, no.

Ed Lane : You taught me everything I know. You made me who I am, Danny. You can't... you can't tell me... that this is how it ends!

[steps towards Daniel who is sobbing]

Ed Lane : You can't. Give me the gun.

Daniel Rangford : [lifts the gun slightly and Ed takes it - sobbing]  No!

    [Ed hugs him]

    Daniel Rangford : Oh, Ga!

Ed Lane : It's gonna be okay.
