- The Comb
In the Room, the wall phone rings. Joe wakes up and answers it. It's Anna, calling for Joe and begging for help...
... and Joe wakes up from his nightmare. He confirms his gun is loaded and then looks out the door to Pittsburgh. He sees that it's raining and gets a Coat for protection from the Room closet, and goes to meet Jennifer on a street. Kruetzfeld's man Anthony is watching secretly from nearby, and Joe put his gun against Jennifer's side, and admits he doesn't know if he can trust her. She points out that he called her, and he needs the Legion's help to get Anna back. Jennifer points out that she's not the one who killed her partner, and Joe insists that he didn't kill Lou.
Jennifer accepts that and gives Joe some fake IDs and credit cards to get by. He gives Jennifer the Pen and the Nail File, but doesn't agree to join the Legion. Joe asks about the Prime Object, and Jennifer says that most people think it's a myth, and the ones who don't end up dead or crazy when looking for it. As he walks off, Joe explains that he needs the Prime Object to get Anna back. Jennifer warns him that he'll get himself killed, but Joe ignores her.
Harold Strizke is buying Dramamine at a convenience store, and tapping the Comb nervously on the counter. He pays cash, and when the clerk opens the register, the money disappears. When the clerk figures that Harold is responsible, he jumps over the counter and Harold disappears. Harold appears behind the clerk, shoves him down, tells him to have a little couth next time, and disappears again as he walks out. He appears again outside and runs away.
Joe is walking down the street and a police car cruises by. Seeing it, Joe calls in an emergency nearby and the officers drive over to investigate. A van with Anthony and the others drive up, and there's no door with a knob nearby. Joe runs as the men in the van try to cut him off. , and they park and Anthony gets out. He shoots Joe in the back with a shotgun as Joe climbs an alley chain link fence after bumping into a homeless man.
Anthony and the others take the unconscious Joe to Kruetzfeld's townhouse, confirm he doesn't have the Key on him, figure he ditched it, and leave him in a closet. Joe wakes up and realizes that the Coat he was wearing protected him from the shotgun blast, since it's inherently indestructible.
At the coroner's office, Lee visits Ruber and reviews the order of events around Lou's murder. She admits that she's not on the case officially, and Ruber says that he and his wife haven't been able to sleep and it's all in the report. Lee leaves and Ruber goes home. He has dinner with Helen but says that he can't eat, and Helen says that she can't stay in the house because Lou was murdered and Joe almost killed Ruber. Ruber snaps at his wife but can't explain and says she doesn't understand.
The phone rings and Ruber answers it, telling Helen that he has to take it. The caller asks if Ruber has found them an Object. He says that he's trying, and the caller says that if he brings the Order an Object, he'll be welcome into the Cabal. She tells Ruber to look for Kang and hangs up. Helen asks who called, and Ruber ignores her.
Anthony takes Joe to Kruetzfeld's study, where he's overseeing the walling-up of the door Joe used to gain entrance earlier. Kruetzfeld asks Joe where the Key is, and says that it was stolen from him after he paid for it. Joe sits down and says that Anna disappeared in the Room, so he needs the Key to get her back along with the Prime Object. Kruetzfeld tells Joe that Joe has no idea how deep in he is, and the only way he can get out is to walk away. Joe isn't impressed, and Kruetzfeld tells Joe that Joe has done him wrong. Kruetzfeld tells his men to take the Coat and let Joe go, and tells Joe that they have a lot in common. He says that he's truly sorry about Anna.
Once Joe leaves, Kruetzfeld tells Anthony not to follow Joe and it's up to Joe.
Joe goes back to the alley and gets the Key from the sleeping homeless man and leaves a wad of bills in the man's coat pocket. Back in the Room, Joe looks at the Clock. He goes back to the townhouse and gives Kruetzfeld the Clock, but says the Key stays with him. Joe wants Kurtzfeld to tell him about the Prime Object, and Kruetzfeld figures they can start over.
The two men walk down the hallway and Kruetzfeld says that the Objects first came into existence on May 4, 1961. In the beginning there was one Cabal--the Collectors--and within five years they gathered almost all 100 Objects. Then they annihilated themselves, either being killed or going insane. The remaining disciples decided to hide the Objects in a vault, and Kruetzfeld has spent years trying to find the vault. In order to get to it, Kruetzfeld needs the Key.
Joe only wants to find Anna, and Kruetzfeld goes to the room where his son Isaac has dozed off watching TV. Kruetzfeld explains that the Prime Object is probably in the vault, and he needs the Glass Eye from the vault which can supposedly repair all flesh. He wants the Eye to "repair" Isaac's leukemia, and tells Joe that's why he's desperate to save his child. Kruetzfeld hopes that they can help each other.
The last surviving Collector is Barbara Strizke, who is almost impossible to find. and she has the Comb, which is almost unbeatable.
Harold is in a grocery store parking lot when a woman loses control of her shopping cart and it slams into his truck. She apologizes and reaches in her purse to give Harold some money for the damage. The woman shoots a gun inside the purse, and Harold disappears before the bullet hits him.
Jennifer goes to a hospital and stares at a man in the rec room, vaguely scribbling on a plastic tray. Joe sends her a text saying that he needs her help, and she sends a photo of a nearby door. Joe uses the Key to go there, and Jennifer asks Joe what he wants. He says that he's trying to find Barbara, and as they drive off Joe explains that he's working with Kruetzfeld. Jennifer says that Kruetzfeld used to be Legion, but then quit and started buying up objects. Kruetzfeld paid Jennifer's partner $2 million to steal the Key and betray the Legion. Joe says that he and Kruetzfeld are helping each other help their children, and says that he'll do anything it takes to get Anna back.
Jennifer agrees to help Joe find Barbara as long as the Legion gets the Comb, and Joe agrees. As she pulls over her SUV, Jennifer says that the Comb stops time. Jennifer pulls up to the office of Arjin Mehta, gets out, and calls him. She says that Joe has the Key, and she can take the Key with Mehta's say-so. Mehta says that Joe is more valuable if they recruit him to their side, and Jennifer warns Mehta that Joe won't join. She insists that they need to act now before Joe falls into Kruetzfeld's hands, and Mehta tells Jennifer to stay with Joe.
Jennifer goes back to Joe and tells him that Barbara is in Michigan, but it's Cabal territory and they're a deadly faction to mess with.
In his office, Ruber finds an Object Location Services website with Suzie Kang listed as the owner. Ruber sends Suzie her $1,000 fee, then goes to Suzie's dry-cleaning shop and says that he's looking for an Object. He offers her cash for something "easy", and Kang wants $5,000. Ruber pays it and Suzie directs him to a pair of Glasses that inhibit combustion. As Ruber goes, Kang tells him that she just tracks Objects, but never touches them because they're too dangerous.
Joe and Jennifer go to Barbara's house, and the landlady lets them in and says that Barbara is dead and her nephew Harold is living there now. Once they're alone, Joe and Jennifer search the place and find photos of Barbara and Harold hunting. Harold's room has photos of semi-naked real-life women, and Joe figures that Harold is a Peeping Tom. He gets a sports fitness name from one photo.
Later, the duo go there and Jennifer checks the women's locker room. Joe spots Harold outside, approaching, and goes out and calls to the man. Harold uses the Comb to vanish and get away, and Joe follows him when he spots him a distance away. Joe chases Harold into a nearby car lot, and when Harold sees Joe he disappears again. When Joe calls to Harold that he just needs his help, Harold appears behind Joe and punches him, then disappears before Joe can grab him.
Joe searches between the cars and Harold appears and hits him with a board. Hiding between the cars, Joe spots Harold's feet by peering beneath one of the cars then raises himself up the ground by the step platforms when Harold tries to spot him the same way. Harold keeps disappearing and reappearing to avoid Joe, but gets steadily sicker as he does so. He finally runs off on foot, and Harold runs off down the street and throws up in a garbage can. Joe uses the Key to get the drop on Harold, drag him into a barber shop, keep Harold from combing his hair with the Comb, grabs the Comb, and throws it in a cup of other combs.
While Harold tries to find the Comb, Joe uses the Key to take himself and Harold to the Room. Harold realizes where he is and Joe claims that if Harold tries to leave without the Key, he'll die instantly. Joe says that he isn't with the Order, and Harold figures that everyone is trying to kill him and get the Comb. Joe explains that he's keeping the Key until he gets Anna back, and asks Harold what he knows about the Prime Object.
Harold says that Barbara never told him about the Prime Object, and when Harold tries to use the combs to figure out which one is the Comb, Joe tells him that Objects don't work in the Room. Joe then takes Harold to the Kansas truck stop restroom, and resets the room to eliminate all the combs except the Comb. The Comb is in the medicine cabinet, and Harold grabs it with relief.
They go back to the truck stop and to a nearby field. When Joe combs his hair, time freezes except for him. After ten seconds of Joe's time, time starts back up and he's dizzy. Harold says that if Joe uses it three or four times, he'll get sick and Harold explains that Joe has to "stop" before he snaps back in to normal time, to avoid motion sickness. He advises Joe to take some Dramamine, and when Joe uses the Comb again he discovers he can't move anything frozen in time. Much to Harold's surprise, Joe gives the Comb back to him. Harold hugs Joe in gratitude.
Jennifer calls Joe, and he apologizes for ducking out on her but says that he's with Harold. Joe tells Jennifer that he's not stealing the comb for her, and the Comb is all Harold has. Jennifer tells Joe that he messed up and hangs up. She gets in her car and drives off, and a man watching Jennifer calls and says where she is, and that they're following her.
As Joe uses the Key on the restroom door, he asks Harold if there's anything else his aunt left behind. He remembers that Barbara left something in the woods, and drives Joe there.
Jennifer goes back to Harold's house and finds a hand-drawn map pointing out the same spot.
Ruber goes to the garage where the Glasses are, and tells the mechanic, Art, that he heard Art has his glasses. Art says that he's selling them and he's not giving them away, and waves a wrench at Ruber. Once Art's back is turned, Ruber gets a road flare out of the trunk of his car and tosses it on a puddle of gasoline near Art. It spreads and sets GG on fire, and Ruber walks past him, sees the Glasses in a cigar box, puts them on, and puts the fire out by looking at it. He gets in his car and drives away.
Harold takes Joe to the spot to the camper his aunt used to hunt from. There's a bundle of Polaroid photos hidden behind the toilet, and Harold gives them to Joe. They're blurry and don't show much, but one has a piece of paper on it saying "Gallup". Joe borrows a lighter from Harold, and confirms that the Gallup photo is indestructible and an Object
Jennifer comes in and asks if Joe is going to keep the Comb. She tells Harold that Joe promises the Comb to the Legion, and Joe tells Harold that he's not going to take the Comb. Jennifer says that Joe is using Harold, and a gunshot rings out and hits Harold in the wrist. Looking outside, Jennifer sees four men with rifles approaching. Joe takes the Comb from Harold and gives him his gun, then goes outside and freezes time.
When the ten seconds wears off, one of the men sees Joe and shoots at him. Joe freezes time again until he can get to the shooter, and knock him out with a board. He takes out another man, and the last two try to flank Joe. One shoots at him and he runs off, trips, and uses the Comb just before a bullet can hit him. Joe avoids it, freezes time, and takes cover behind a tree.
Jennifer arrives and knocks the woman shooting out from behind. The last man arrives, and Joe freezes time, then knocks the bullet heading for Jennifer away just as time unfreezes. Jennifer shoots and kills her attacker, and stares at the body in shock.
Back at the camper, Jennifer stares off into space while Joe collects the party's rifles, and Harold comes out. Joe gives Harold the Comb, and Harold tells Joe to keep it, wishes Joe luck, and walks off. Joe gives the Comb to Jennifer, and she says she's never killed anyone before.
Ruber meets with the Order and their leader, Margaret Milne, shoots a gun at Ruber's head. It doesn't work because of the Glasses preventing combustion, and satisfied she tells Ruber that he's in.
Joe finds Wally and one of his victims and brings them to a piercing tattoo in Pittsburgh. The victim cowers away from Wally, and Joe asks Wally what's in Gallup. Wally tells Joe that he doesn't know, because once Joe knows there's no going back and it won't bring Anna back. Joe tells Wally that he doesn't have a choice and Wally uses the Ticket to send Joe to Gallup and then uses it on himself.
Falling onto the highway in Gallup, Joe and Wally go to the abandoned Sunview Motel.
