When it comes to comic books and comic book movies, don’t count a character as dead until you see a body go into the ground. Sometimes not even then—right Norman Osborn and Doc Ock? So perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that James Gunn, an iconoclastic filmmaker and longtime friend of Nathan Fillion, is up for letting one good turn deserve another. And the turn of plot in The Suicide Squad’s opening scene is very, very good.

Confirming a raft of sequel-related rumors in one fell swoop, Alan Tudyk has told Fandango that he will indeed return for both Frozen 2 and Wreck-It Ralph 2, extending his fruitful working relationship with Disney long into 2019.
Tudyk voiced the part of King Candy in the original Wreck-It Ralph, and has remained a fixture of Disney’s lineup ever since, appearing in all of the studio’s animated features up to and including this year’s rather brilliant Moana. It makes for quite the successful streak, and both Tudyk and Mouse House appear keen to uphold tradition in the years to come. Could that spell a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? It’s a topic that reared its head in conversation but first, Alan Tudyk revealed that he’ll be back, back, back for those two animated sequels, even if he’s unsure which characters he’ll be playing.

No critic is infallible. It’s an open secret that few of them will admit, but would be remiss to deny. As valuable a resource as the informed film critic can provide when appraising a motion picture, we’re prone to the same random prejudices and peccadillos as anyone else. Sure, professionalism dictates that we diligently strive to check them at the door, but few of even the very best films are recognized as classics on first sight, and any number of random factors – including real-life experience – can skew our perception as we weigh the many factors that lead to a film’s ultimate success or failure.
Citizen Kane (1941), The Wizard of Oz (1939), and Blade Runner (1982) were all panned by critics upon initial release, yet today they’re rightfully considered classics. So what stuck in Pauline Kael’s craw when she turned up her nose at The Graduate, and who...

Like many mainstream stars and directors, “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn has a little-known past linking him to the world of pornography. But he doesn't hide it, in part because his porn past is so clean. Also read: James Gunn Will Write, Direct ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Sequel (Video) Five years ago, Gunn launched “PG Porn,” an online series featuring all the conventions of porn, with none of the sex stuff. One of his films, “Roadside Ass-istance,” finds Gunn playing a good-hearted mechanic who fixes the car of porn/non-porn actress Sasha Grey. But when it's time for her to pay for.

Our Casting Lex Luthor in a Man of Steel Sequel article created quite a buzz. We made decisions based on actors who we believe are talented enough to make the performance special and used the tone of Man of Steel as the biggest determining factor and that led to choices, both obvious and unconventional. So we didn’t flinch one second when adding longtime Lex on Smallville, Michael Rosenbaum to our list.
Now it’s true, Rosenbaum spent a long time with the role, exploring the dichotomy between friend and foe, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t bring something new to the performance. That’s how rich the role of Lex Luthor can be. Rosenbaum caught wind of our casting choices and tweeted this response in support of our confidence in him to reprise the role, while having some fun at Bryan Cranston’s (Breaking Bad) expense.

Actor Michael Rosenbaum is no stranger to comic book worlds - in fact, he spent years playing one of the most iconic villains of all time. For 154 episodes of the television series Smallville he took on the role of Lex Luthor, Superman's arch enemy. The show ended in 2011, but it would seem that he isn't ready to let go of hanging around superheroes - so he's potentially making the switch from DC to Marvel. Rosenbaum has revealed that he is now going out for the lead role in Marvel Studios' upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. The star revealed the news on Twitter, posting on his account, "Read for my pal @JamesGunn Guardians Of The Galaxy for Peter Quill. What a treat! Thanks Jimmy. @Marvel" Gunn, who is writing and directing the space adventure, previously worked with Rosenbaum on his digital series PG Porn (playing Peanuts' Charlie Brown in two...

What a treat! I can't prove it, but it's just one of those feelings I get. Maybe it's because I've seen his Troma movies. Or because I've watched his "PG Porn" shorts or because I saw "Super," his deranged little riff on the superhero film, or because he is pretty much a non-stop blast of filthy and funny on Twitter. At this point, it’s not surprising when Marvel picks a left field director for their movies. They’ve practically made a formula of choosing filmmakers that the public would scratch their head over. In that grand tradition, Marvel is reportedly looking at James Gunn (Slither, Super) to handle their forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. This is awesome. A protege of the Troma School of Movie Mayhem is going to graduate to Marvel. Repeat: the dude who made PG Porn is a few negotiations away from getting a big budget and bunch of superheroes to play with. Can’t beat that. Of course, Gunn was also the writer behind Scooby-Doo and the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake, so he’s not exactly a stranger to the mainstream, but the bulk of his work is not the kind that would inspire non-ironic action figures. That’s part of what makes this a genius idea. The...

It looks like Marvel may have found their guy. Heat Vision reports that "Marvel executives now are talking exclusively with" director James Gunn, of the indie flicks Slither and Super and "PG Porn", to direct the recently announced Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Marvel Studios announced at Comic-Con that the late summer 2014 movie, leading up to Avengers 2 in May of 2015, will be a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, featuring the team that includes Drax the Destroyer, a green warrior, Groot, a giant tree-man, Star-Lord, a half-human/alien intergalactic vigilante, Gamora, Thanos' adopted daughter, and of course Rocket Raccoon. Ever since this was announced, I've been thinking who would be the perfect person to take this on. It's not only going to be a challenge to direct an intergalactic movie about three alien creatures and two humanoids, plus you've got to work with Marvel their demands. THR's report says "after ...

Right now, you can catch Slither director James Gunn’s most recent foray into violence and comedy. Super tells a tale of a do-it-yourself superhero who attempts to save his drug addicted wife from her dealer with mainly unsuccessful and violent results. Recently, Andy and I were lucky enough to sit down with the St. Louis born director to discuss his new vigilante film. Besides discussing Super and the “deconstructionist superhero” genre, the three of us chatted about his start with Troma, his “hiatus” after Slither, the troubles of filmmaking, and his most recent favorite films.

Super is, as James Gunn tells me, “about a guy who is on some sort of spiritual quest, and he just happens to wear a superhero costume during it.” The film features Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page in their craziest roles so far, and parades a rate of violence more similar to The Toxic Avenger than Kick-Ass into the new subgenre of superhero movies that explain what it really means to be a caped crusader. However, at the end of this extensive interview, Gunn tells me, “only I know what this movie is.”
I sat down with Gunn, writer/director of the IFC Midnight film Super, in a roundtable interview in Austin, Texas during this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival. James Gunn is one of those directors like Joss Whedon or Quentin Tarantino, where you feel like he's accomplished so much more than he's actually done. I have an inexplicable love for James Gunn, but honestly, he's done Slither and the PG Porn parodies and that's about it. Sure, he was mostly responsible for Tromeo and Juliet and yes, he did earn screenwriting credit on Scooby-Doo 2, but his resume is kind of bare. So I was rooting hard for Super, and not just because Gunn hired one of our Pajibans to work on his film. I love the concept of the vigilante superhero or the homegrown maniac fighting back against the people who have wronged him. Gunn had a very original idea six years ago when he wrote the script, which is when he should have made the film. Instead, he's now going to get moderately unfair comparisons to Kick-Ass,...

James Gunn‘s newest film Super is comical, gritty, and lovably all over the place in tone and nature. This isn’t a satire. This isn’t a parody. And this isn’t anything that resembles Kick-Ass or Defendor, so no need for the comparisons. Super is its own thing. Some, well most, will find the tone uneven and jarring, which is intentional.
The mood swings of Gunn’s script are so apparent, Gunn himself must have had some intention behind it. Knowing the filmmaker’s past work – including the excellent Slither and PG Porn — I wouldn’t put it past him. Gunn is a clever filmmaker, so whenever he takes a turn towards oddness, one must put trust in the man that he knows what he’s doing and is going for something more than oddball-ness. And Super, without question, goes into odder territory.

Considering all the other subversive stuff in "Super," it makes a certain degree of sense that in making a film about a self-made superhero of questionable sanity and suspect superpowers, James Gunn found the full command of his own abilities as a writer/director. Known for such cult faves "Tromeo and Juliet" and "Slither," Gunn has been a master of the gross-out gag and the witty retort for quite some time, but in "Super," he does the unexpected in making a delightfully obscene film where puke jokes and savage beatings are in service of something genuinely philosophical.
It's a comedy first, every frame of which is as lovingly handmade as the costume of The Crimson Bolt, the alter ego of Frank D'Arbo (Rainn Wilson), a fry cook whose wife (Liv Tyler) falls back into her drug addiction and...

My Thoughts: I thought this would be a rip-off of Kick-Ass until I saw the trailer. Though some of the same points seem to be hit (checking in at the comic book store, making the costume) this film seems to have it’s own take on masked vigilantism. Wilson plays a poor schlub whose wife leaves him for a tough guy. So naturally he reacts by becoming a superhero, despite lacking any actual super powers. Ellen Page looks pretty awesome as his wannabe sidekick. I like the scene where she shows off her costume. Nathan Fillion is shown in the trailer too, but I can’t tell who he plays. Best guess, some bizzaro version of Page’s character. Director Gunn did the underrated Slither and the amusing...

The idea for James Gunn's Super -- another regular person turned superhero -- felt a little more original before a series of these movies, like Kick-Ass and Defendor hit theaters (or, DVD, in the case of the latter). But then again, this is James Gunn, director of Slither, veteran of Troma, and the guy behind the "PG Porn" series. What you're going to get is a little different, and from the looks of this trailer -- and advanced word about Ellen Page's nutjob character -- that direction will skew toward average people dressing up as superheroes to unleash their inner sociopath. It also appears, from this spectacular clip, that Rainn Wilson's superhero character is not familiar with proportionate punishment.

This year was my first time attending the infamous Comic-Con and it couldn’t be closer to being a wonderful experience. It’s a nerd’s heaven. You’re surrounded by people as passionate or even more-so around the things you love. While the best part for me was meeting people whose writing I’ve followed for quite sometime now, it was also a nice kicker to learn a bit more about some of the upcoming films that were showcased there. Even though I saw pretty much no footage – excluding Thor – the word-of-mouth travels at light-speed that it’s almost as if you don’t even need to be there. Also, thanks to some shoddy flip-cam work it’s pretty simple to find the Q an A’s from the panels online to learn more about some of these upcoming films.

Bad news. Platinum Dunes' remake of The Monster Squad is getting ever closer to actually happening. It was announced this week that the writing team of Mark and Brian Gunn have officially been hired to pen the script. If the news was that the screenplay was being written by James Gunn (who is Brian's brother and Mark's cousin), I'd actually be all for it, but Mark and Brian's best credit is Bring It On Again. Yeah, that's right, Bring It On Again. Let's just hope that a little James rubbed off on these guys when they were working on his PG Porn webisodes [1]. More after the jump... Rob Cohen, producer/executive producer of the original film, has always been attached to produce, but it was recently confirmed that rumors of Cohen's intention to direct are also true. Fred Dekker, co-writer/director of the original film gave this statement to Eric Vespe...

In March it was announced that Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes was developing a remake of Fred Dekker's 1987 movie The Monster Squad, written by Dekker and Shane Black. Producers Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, and Rob Cohen have been meeting with writers, and have finally hired someone to pen the remake. Heatvision also reveals that the plan is to turn the family-oriented property into a potential franchise. Dunes has hired cousin screenwriting team Mark and Brian Gunn, writers of MTV's television movie 2gether and the television series it spawned, the writers behind James Gunn's PG Porn and the direct to DVD sequel Bring it On Again. They are also attached to the Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel and an in-development big screen adaptation of Mighty Mouse. A lot of people love to bash the Platinum Dunes remakes, but I've always said that all they need are better screenplays,...

Mark and Brian Gunn have been tapped to write a remake of The Monster Squad for Paramount and Platinum Dunes. The duo were recently tasked to pen the upcoming Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel as well. Brian is the brother of James Gunn ( Slither ) and was behind many of James' "PG Porn" web shoots. Mark and Brian also have Mighty Mouse coming up. The Monster Squad - a redo of Fred Dekker's '80s cult classic - was announced in March with Rob Cohen on board to produce. In April, producer Brad Fuller told us they were uncertain if the film would feature monsters we know or new monsters. "We're definitely using the original film as a blueprint and love the fun parts of it. We have three or four different takes, some stick closely to the original -...

Hall (who also directed the web series) responded to the pair of wins saying, "It is an honor for 'Fear Clinic' to win two Streamy Awards. It demonstrates all the hard work that our entire team put into the...

The nominees for the 2010 Streamys were announced today. The Streamys celebrate online television programming and this year they have a fantastic line up of nominees. Last year was the Streamys debut year and the winners included high profile shows such as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and the exceptional Battlestar Galactica web series The Face of the Enemy.
This year there is even more competition with some really interesting content now being released on the web rather than through more traditional media routes. Two of my favourites from this year’s nominee list are the excellent Interview Project which is presented by davidlynch.com and the slightly flawed but thoroughly enjoyable Angel of Death, created by Ed Brubaker and starring Zoe Bell, which also received a DVD release last year.
The awards ceremony takes place on April 11th 2010 and the full list of nominees is listed below with handy links...

The Hollywood Reporter has word that Spike TV is greenlighting a golf-themed pilot (cashing in on the current Tiger Woods hysteria going on in the media).
Back Nine stars The Dukes of Hazzard and Smallville alum John Schneider as Ronnie Barnes, a hard-drinking, larger-than-life, washed-up former U.S. Open champion. He travels the country competing in small-time tournaments with Tiger, his sex-addicted longtime caddy, in order to qualify again for the PGA Tour.
Jason Filardi (17 Again) and Mark Perez (Accepted) are tasked with writing duties (as well as directorial duties on the pilot), and Miguel Nunez is in negotiations to play Tiger. John Lynch is set to executive produce.
Interestingly enough, Spike fast tracked the Back Nine script almost a year prior to Woods’ November car crash which led to the leak of extramarital affairs. Woods is expected to publicly address those allegations for the first time Friday.

Here at EW we can't get enough of Nathan Fillion, star of Castle, and one of the nicest people ever to pop into our offices to just say hi (well, okay, to just say hi and pimp his show). Another big Fillion fan is writer-director James Gunn who cast the actor in his wildly underappreciated gorefest Slither and in the fantastic debut edition of his NSFW web series PG Porn (see video after the jump). It now turns out that Gunn has recruited Fillion for his new movie, Super, a comedic take on the superhero film. The actor joins Rainn Wilson,...

The week started off with news that web network Revision3 is dipping its foot in the scripted side of the web series pool, snatching up Web Zeroes as its first scripted web series. PG Porn creator James Gunn returned with his latest web series, Humanzee, one that no doubt riles up the Jane Goodall set. It's offensive, sure, a little too offensive for its original patrons XBox Live and Spike.com. But as web video evangelist Tim Street would say, it succeeds in stirring up those multiple emotions. Sony's zombie-com web series Woke Up Dead came out with early numbers yesterday, announcing that it had 1.4 million streams on Crackle.com in just ten days since its premiere. And yet-to-be-released Mercury Men is already getting people worked up in anticipation, releasing a behind the scenes look at the sci-fi series' production design. It even had us speculating that it might be...

James Gunn seems to be digging the web series world these days. The Scooby-Doo screenwriter is following up on his successful porn flick satire series PG Porn, with the release today of an even racier series, Humanzee! The offbeat scripted comedy was shot back in 2008 and was planned to head to XBox Live, until someone over at Microsoft pulled the plug due to content concerns. Did they really not know what they signed up for when tapping Gunn? First off, we have to throw out the Nsfw warning on the first episode (above), mostly for f-bombs, not nudity. The show itself feels like a live action cartoon sitcom, complete with a laugh track pushing us through the quick setups and reversals. Gunn's description of what it's about is just too good to paraphrase: Humanzee! is the story of myself and my human-chimp hybrid son, appropriately named "Humanzee" (played by my brother,...

Writer/director James Gunn (Slither) has put together a web series entitled "PG Porn," which teams mainstream Hollywood actors with performers from the adult industry for sexless pornography. As Gunn describes it: "How many times have you been watching a great porn film . you're really enjoying the story, the acting, the cinematography . when, all of the sudden, they ruin everything with People Having Sex?" In this new episode, Sean Gunn ("Gilmore Girls") goes in for a checkup from porn star Belladonna. And just when things started to heat up, he ends up with a big surprise. The video contains some moaning and is not safe for work. See the new episode below and check out the previous five episodes by clicking on the following links: (episode 1, episode 2, episode 3, episode 4, episode 5, episode 6). Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page and Liv Tyler have been cast in Super, the new project from writer/director James Gunn (Slither, PG Porn).
After Variety ran a piece on the news earlier, Gunn responded with more details on his personal blog, stating that he’s “never loved a screenplay more than Super and have been working on it for years.”
Rainn and I have been working together on the project for a few months now – Rainn will be playing the lead role of Frank D’Arbo who dresses up as a superhero called the Crimson Bolt; he’s got no superpowers other than a pipe wrench. Rainn and I both worked hard to get the best possible folks involved. We were lucky to get Ted Hope to produce – he’s done such movies as Happiness, The Ice Storm, The Savages, American Splendor, and 21 Grams. This is not a wacky, over-the-top comedy.

St. Louis-native James Gunn has a new film in the works called Super, which will be a comical take on the superhero genre. Gunn is a former Troma writer (Terror Firmer, Tromeo & Juliet) and has recently built a husky Internet following with his series of PG Porn shorts. His last feature film directorial outing was with the incredibly cool comedy-horror Slither (2006).
Gunn’s cast is coming together, featuring Liv Tyler, Ellen Page and now Rainn Wilson. Wilson will play an average Joe who takes on a superhero alter ego known as Crimson Bolt. This transformation occurs after witnessing his wife (Tyler) taken in by a drug dealer. The catch is, he doesn’t actually have any superpowers, instead wielding a mighty wrench.

James Gunn has been making his way slowly in Hollywood indies for over a decade, and although what big budget movies he wrote haven't necessarily been on Oscar-watch, he still wrote and co-starred one of the funniest or at least most underrated superhero spoofs out there, The Specials. And he's behind that really runny PG Porn thing. Knowing he's back in superhero land with maturity and fun actors is enough to forgive him for writing 2 Scooby-Doo films. Almost. In 2004, "Head-On" became the first German film in 18 years to win the Golden Bear Award at the Berlinale Film Festival. Much was made of the film's lead female performance by Sibel Kekilli, a 23-year-old newcomer who earned raves for her raw, heartbreaking portrayal of a woman who enters a marriage of convenience but continues to experiment sexually with other men. Days after celebrating the success of the film, the German newspaper Bild ran an article revealing Kekilli's sordid past as the star of "nine hardcore pornographic movies." Many in the industry wondered if this would be the end of a career that had seemed, only days earlier, so promising.

I think I remember hearing something about James Gunn heading some sort of short horror film project for the XBox 360 [1] a while back, but I've never actually seen any of the final films. The project was called 'Horror Does Comedy', in which he and a handful of other notable modern horror film directors -- including James Wan (Saw), David Slade (30 Days of Night) and Lucky McKee (The Woods) -- were to create exclusive content made available for download over the XBox Live Marketplace. Well according to Gunn, not everything went entirely as planned. It seems as though Microsoft had a hard time getting behind anything that pushed the boundaries of what they considered PG-13. This meant that Gunn was apparently forced to compromise his work in order to meet what he thinks are some pretty ridiculous standards. From his blog [2]: I wasn’t too happy with the version of...
