Smoke and Mirrors
albertval-6956010 December 2022
What the viewer will probably remember is the movie's crooked storylines. It's as twisty as it gets. Perhaps what the character Dr. Garcia del Olmo says sums up the movie's central point: the truth is whatever you make it.

One reviewer commented that the viewer might feel betrayed or cheated in the end. This could be true because the viewer might think that he has figured out what's happening only to be handed another surprise in the end. It's smoke and mirrors.

It might be the movie's greatest appeal and the director's greatest feat: to leave the viewer dumbfounded. To be sure, it's well-executed, pacing is all right, the cast is quite capable, cinematography is great and set design is praiseworthy. Incidentally, it shines a light, almost as an aside, on the care and treatment of psychiatric patients.

Watch this film but be prepared to be flabbergasted.

How do you recognize a good movie ?
stephane-372-90660920 December 2022
Answer: You want to watch how it ends, and it catches you just after the first seconds, right until the last.

This movie is a performance in overall consistency, pace and quality. Certainly some of the best in 2022. Using a difficult subject (mental health), in a difficult place (a sanitarium with crazy people), with a difficult duration (2 and 1/2 hours), it manages to create an atmosphere, tensions, twists, attachment and beauty at all times, with charismatic actors handling all characters that you do not want to leave. These a signs of a very well crafted movie, giving a lot of care to details and to the audience, but without any easy writing or gratuitous eye candy.

Watch it, you won't be disappointed (except if you are looking for stereotypical and empty movies).

Pleasantly Surprised
tmarie279217 January 2023
I watched this with little expectations other than a mix of negative reviews and one about 'a movie for intellectuals.' If you enjoyed Shutter Island, I highly recommend as this is of the some genre, well made, characters develop at a comfortable pace and the crooked lines in the plot are well played, done with thought and til the end.

I look forward to watching this again as I know I will pick up something new with each watch. I didn't recognize any of these actors, but was very impressed by all. Any movie set made to be in an insane asylum can go one of many ways. The characters here were intriguing, make you laugh cry and want to be their friends.

Last plot twist didn't work for me
catia-s11 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Very interesting concept and acting.

The pace is a bit slow in the beginning but the dialogue is intense and you really need to pay attention to the details to understand what's happening, although you never do and that's the story's mindf... and it works until the last plot twist which comes with no explanation no real rhyme or reason, yes, I got it in terms of shocking factor but it needed 5 more minutes to make it feel real after all the 2h30 where it shows something different.

However, as I like a good suspense thriller and being in a loony bin with such weird and fascinating characters, with righteous and caring doctors it was still a good movie and entertaining.

It would be a 7 or 8 if the finale was different.

Oriol Paulo does it again
otnememento-29 December 2022
Another great movie by one of the top Spanish directors nowadays. As his other projects you get a fantastic dosis of suspense and will keep asking questions throught the film. A difficult book to adapt but the director manages to do it perfectly well. Really entertaining movie with quality. Eduard Fernández and Oriol Paulo are always a guarantee for movie lovers.. My advice is not to read a lot about the film. I also recommend checking the director's previous films. This has been the best year in Spanish cinema in a long time. Mistery, good acting and entertainment, enough for me. Turn on the tv and Enjoy...

Psychological thriller/drama-mystery film directed by Oriol Paulo (the man behind the original versions of Balda/Dobaara/Blurr)

I went into the film not knowing anything about the film, (you should as well; I'll spare the plot here) and halfway in, it had me like "what is the world is going on here?" as it is the case with most of this director's films.

The plot slowly unravels and makes you go "Ooooooohhhh...! Innterestinggg" and the end makes you question everything you've watched. Hella twists and turns throughout!

If you enjoy the joy of looking for answers, this one is surely for you. For the rest of you thriller junkies, this will be worth your time as well.

Good mystery drama with interesting plotline
gabriel_sanchez11 January 2023
The movie starts with a bird's-view of a mountainous landscape. A car drives down a road. We know our heroine is going to be alone in this journey.

Alice is a private detective set to investigate the events that lead to the death of the son of her client. Her client does not agree with the final report: suicide. She decides to enter sanatorium where her client's son was institutionalized to conduct her investigations on the source. Once there, who can judge sanity over insanity?

The plot follow two storylines: we see Alice's perspective and investigation, and then we shift into a breakout event that led to the death of one of the sanatorium's patients. The story keeps us hooked until the very end, a great who-and-whydunit story that leaves us guessing until the very end.

The ending is good too, although people who read the book where screenwriters based this movie's story on can argue which ending is the best. I personally think both takes are good.

For a mystery story, it's possible to defend that the movie is too long, dragging a bit. I feel that this is not true; the movie is long, but the story is good. I don't mind being hooked for over 2 hours if the story is good.

At the end, I felt rewarded: the movie delivered. One could debate that there are some really messed up stuff that happens, and that the police seems a bit lost in this whole mess, but you need to remember this story happens in 1979.

If you are a fan of mystery dramas and don't mind the time spent on this movie, God's Crooked Lines is recommendable.

Not new, but not boring (if you can stand a slow pace film)
Movie_Rating_n_Ranking14 December 2022
The Mystery concept is on full display in this film, though unfortunately it is not a new, refreshed, or novel mystery. Here we have the typical madhouse film that questions the sanity of the protagonist mixed with the story of the typical crime story without a clear culprit.

But don't get me wrong, this movie is good and entertaining, despite its slow pace and excessively long footage. It is somehow a good mystery that if you plunge into the plot, you will fall into the confusion that the story presents and you will be motivated to unravel this mess with the smell of old parchment. The last plot twist can be felt a little bit forced, but after all, it's expected.

When Oriol Paulo meets Nolan...!!!
PANDIAN1206211 January 2023
What an amazing mind-blowing psychological thriller making the easily the year's best screenplay flick... Oriol Paulo of "THE INVISIBLE GUEST" has crafted a briiliant screenplay that keeps u guessing with its past and present mode of storytelling... Quite creepy in the beginning 30 mins or so later plunges into deep heart every minute with twist and turns keeping us edge of seat, convincingly told in such a way that one can't predict who is pretending or who is real and does indulge in shocking act often... Barbara Lennie does carry the whole movie single handedly with her smart, manipulative gesture...truly Oscar worthy in every sense... Overall a perfect movie for every movie buffs.

Wrong final...
erhanipekciler18 December 2022
First of all very nice characterizations, I love everybody in the movie. Superb acting. Story was interesting, till end I thought lots of things because in some points, this movie is so similar with some other movies and every time story went different way. So I can say that was good but final... Final was terrible in my opinion. I hate the movies with open ended final. Because I don't wanna think what will happen, neither series nor movies.. This is really sucks. Anyway, till final it was 8 for me but with final I gave 6. Also this is very long movie. Maybe for a negative comment I can say main character has smoked too much. :) I hated this situation too. It is watchable but don't expect too high.

Brilliant movie, 10 out of 10 for script, actors, soundtrack and overall depth!
gen8612 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Contrary to the book where the ending is clear and explained in detail the movie left us with an open ended ending open to interpretations. It still left both options on the table and both scenarios are entirely possible.

The movie left me feeling completely satisfied (mentally) and scratched all my itches , with zero CGI in 2022 carried only by the brilliant script and the amazing actors it is easily in top 3 best movies of 2022 and also instantly goes in Top 10 my personal favorites.

I can easily recommend this movie to everyone, even the hardest critics will find something good in the movie.

The Scorpion Sanatorium...
Xstal22 December 2022
What you see is not what you get, but a story you'll probably want to forget, as it twists and it turns to contrive and distort, psychologically coiled, laboured and contort. You know from the off what makes some people tick, if they're completely insane or just plain lunatic, but inside an asylum you're one of the crowd, and that makes you receptive, to things lost in shrouds.

It's quite an arduously long presentation, that takes you to a place that may leave some in consternation, although you know right at the end, as you tally up connections, that if Agatha or Alfred did it, you'd applaud without objections - although they would have done it a lot better, with more engagement and with a bit more dangle.

Book ending was way better
michote19 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As with many other movies, the book and in this case its finale is way better than the ambiguity where this movie ends. Audience is left scrathing their heads without a real ending while the book provides an intelligent, well-written finale where she's what always was: a sick woman who tried to murder her husband and has been talking her way out of it with her lies. In the book, they find out she's lying (that's where the movie ends) AND they vote a second time, releasing her once again bc the reason for her illness was gone (aka husband took her money which is all he wanted from her) but yet she decides to stay when she realizes she is really sick and insane and could not trust her mind. Great ending, why did they remove that from the movie? How terrible is it that you can't just simply even make a female character the bad one these days? The story would have a much better message and conclusion (a sick person realizing that they are, just like shutter island) vs the cliche of audience believing what they want (bc they won't make a female lead the villain).

Overall just another "nah" film.

Pretty much a spanish version of "Shutter Island"
Erik_Surewaard11 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What movie do you think of when you read the following items?!

1. a (private) investigator which arrives at a mental hospital to do a murder investigation

2. The mental hospital is large, situated in a remote and secluded location, with large woods surrounding the place

3. The weather is often bad with lots of rain and lightning

4. All takes place in a time where computers were not available and with a heavy emphasis on smoking cigarettes

5. The investigation includes many flashbacks to the time when the murder took place

6. A separate part of the mental hospital that is dark and dungeon-like: named "Ward C" in "Shutter Island" and "The Cage" in this movie.

Well, what comes immediately to my mind is Leonardo DiCaprio's "Shutter Island": a movie that holds spot #143 in IMDb's "top 250 movies of all-time". A further 'coincidence' is the duration of the movie... Both are around 2.5 hours in length, which is uncommonly long for a nowadays feature film.

So... recognizing all these similarities, it of course leads one to think that "God's Crooked Line" may have been completely inspired by "Shutter Island". Including even the very surprising ending of the latter movie.

I honestly hoped there would have been a different plot twist in this movie than "Shutter Island"... But everything actually happened in line with what you would expect if you have seen "Shutter Island".

So where I already had the indiciation that I may be watching a movie with a similar plot as "Shutter Island", I was still quite entertained by it. Whilst even the ending didn't come as a surprise, I would still vote this movie with a score of 6.6 / 10, just barely making it an IMDb rating of 7 stars.

Somewhat disappointing
jfsalguero31 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am a big fan of Oriol Paulo, who I think is on par with the greatest contemporary Spanish Directors like Amenabar. Almodovar and Alex de lglesia.

That is why it is so disappointing to find a script with so many holes in it. So many twists and turns were simply unbelievable.

I mean, who on earth is going to believe that two twins can be born in an asylum in the Spain of the 1980s and live there henceforth?

Or, what happened with the coroner after she was attacked by Alice and, more importantly, how come that Alice was not made accountable for attacking her?

Why all car registration numberplates were fake? Anyone who is familiar with car registrations in Spain would notice that those numberplates would not be legal. Why not use real numberplates to add authenticity to the film?

The film also lacks pace... i found myself extremely bored at times. However, I found it well acted, produced and directed.

A good thriller needs logical explanations.
avgalia26 December 2022
And this is the problem I have with this movie. The plot doesn'r add up to me. I would not like to make spoilers. Just let me say that Alicia, a detective, seeks to discover the truth about the death of an inmate, Damián García del Olmo. However, the movie goes on an on and that is never clarified. Some dialogues are just vehicles to trick the spectator and I believe that a good thriller shouldn't be using that as a resource to make it look good.

I rated it with 6 stars because the performances are very good, the suspense atmosphere is well created, and you do not know who is lying, until the end; but logic is missing because there are things that are never explained. I believe a good thriller needs logical explanations at the end.

WHO'S RIGHT? WHO'S WRONG?
andrewchristianjr28 January 2023
Very well done! The question throughout the movie is whether she is absolutely sane and telling the whole truth, or whether she is suffering from a mental disorder, and sucking everyone in.

Synopsis: The film is centered around Alice Gould de Almenara, a ravishingly beautiful and extremely intelligent woman who enters a mental asylum situated in Spain to uncover the mysterious death of an inmate. She is a private investigator and was contacted by the deceased's father to examine the case.

timeline confusion
lukacro11 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I would give the film a higher rating if the film's epilogue explained how the main character could claim to have come to a sanatorium to investigate a particular murder when it actually happened chronologically at the end of the film. The murder of a young twin was something that was discussed among several characters obviously before it happened, and the finale gave us no indication that it could be main character repeatedly reconstructing her stay at the sanatorium. (something like a mental loop or simmilar)

Although the film is quite long, it captures the viewer's attention span and draws you into the story and the main character's illness, constantly changing your thoughts about how the story will end.

Let it be, be insane and it deserves a 9
cvcxtvdq30 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Very good movie. To me the whole world in the asylum is one big metaphor for 'an'- not 'the' - outcome of the story, otherwise said your outcome.

Let me give you some examples:
  • Urquieta's waterphobia/illness and his declaration/lie in favour of Alice Gould stands for her husband, victim of food poisoning but on the other hand the liar, making a lie about her. Ever thought that the food poisoning might be real but the husband's fraudulent actions even so (it's not always either... or... but sometimes both... and...). The psychedelic scene after the shock therapy affirms this,
  • Romulo en Remo is a metaphor for Alice's dual personality. It also reflects an ambiguity. Alice reflects a love towards Romulo and vice versa, whereas Remo is ignored by het throughout the whole story. This resembles the viewer's continous fight over who Alice really is. Is she Romelo and thus less sick or more sick, or is she Remu and thus more sick or less sick. Here you can equalize sickness with goodness, realness,... Wat the viewer should keep in mind: only romelu survives, so one side of het dual personality dies...
  • the gnome and Elephant man (Alvar and Donadio): the latter one sets immediately her eye on the sick sister (Alice), whereas the first one is killed by Alice (compare the gnome's death with Alvar's trial), afterwards Donadio's entrance can be compared with Elephant man's revenge
  • the group of doctors declaring her sane among a group full of doctors (the doctor are the patiëntes she creaties a band with, the trial is the ruckus Alice caused with the fire)
-...

To me: Alice Gould stands for a dual personality, kind of like Romulo and Remo. It's up to the viewer to decide if her more expressive/Romulo is her good side or bad side, and if her more introvert side/Remo is the other one. And when you have decided, it's Donadio who makes the final judgement.

And you can never be wrong. It's not about what is true in this story, but rather what's real for your. Therefor use the metaphors for your own true reality.

Oriol Paulo may truly be one of the modern masters of thrill! [+68%]
arungeorge1317 December 2022
Oriol Paulo's films have always been about details and God's Crooked Lines, currently streaming on Netflix, is no different. Anyone who has watched Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island will find certain aspects of the first and second acts to be extremely familar. But the devil is indeed in the smaller, finer details. The protagonist Alice, played to scintillating effect by Bárbara Lennie, is textured in ways you can come to expect in Paulo's films. We're given elaborate visual perspective on how she could be a victim and also how she could be psychologically unstable. We're also told that Alice is extremely intelligent and she presents her case to medical practioners in a very articulate, believable manner.

So, in this 2h 34m slow-burn psychological thriller, turns out the truth is whatever you make it to be (which is also a line uttered by one of the characters). It's all smoke and mirrors, and supposedly intentioned that way because there's a last-minute twist (after quite a few early on) questioning all the darts that struck bullseye up until then. However, there are no two ways about how good the film comes across aurally and visually. Fernando Velázquez's score is pretty solid and Bernat Bosch's cinematography soaks in all that unsettling-yet-beautiful imagery in and around the asylum. I also noticed that the film is based on a 1979 novel by Torcuato Luca de Tena, who actually stayed in a psychiatric institution to conjure up these characters.

There's a warm equation shared between Alice and certain inmates, and Paulo captures them wonderfully. Not only does this serve as a means to forward the plot, but it also offers the protagonist's arc a better chance at closure (even when the final twist derails everything). The art direction and costume departments do a stellar job in making the whole setup work, and the only gripe that most viewers are likely to have is the somewhat stretched run-time.

Underrated film of 2022
AzimAzimzade13 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Truth is Oriol Paulo never disappointed me. He is definitely genius and in general Spanish are really good in detective/thriller genre. Film is incredibly fabulous and mind blowing. There is a line in the film which is " Truth is what we want to believe" In the film plot twists are great. We accept truth as a lie and lies as truth. Even this is proof that how the film is succesful. Of course this is also related about cast because it is chosen with accuracy and Barbara Lennie who plays Alice did amazing job. This story may be fictional but it shows human relation , manipulation and how our brain is strange. Our brain believes what we want to see. At first I thought Alice was telling truth and never doubted her behaviour even accept what she has done as a professional but then when I realized she has actually mental problems I rewatch and saw how many things I missed about her. When I watched second time I scrutinized and realized that she always acted like paranoiac and schizophrenic. This happens to me and may be most of us because our brain accepted her as a detective. Because we believed her and when everything become clear we understand what was happened. That is why I say this is directly related about human relation. When we believe someone, we never see his/her bad behaviour. We should look at from others' perspectives too. Because sometimes we think somebody is villain but then realize he/she is actually good and vice versa. Film fools us more than once. And I think that is its real success.

Bad final
pipobakro31 December 2022
I gave it 10 just one minute before the final but with this final i give 7.

It was very good movie everything was good unexpected story you can't expect anything. Just brilliant.

But the final destroyed every good thing in this movie.

The only negative thing that i can say that characters smoke too much.

And because of this final i can say that he is just copy from another movie for leonardo dicaprio ( shutter island ) that made the story just copy from that movie and if the final was not like that i would say that is another story and great movie I think they just made like that to make another chapter of it.

Ultimately construed inconsistent and frustrating
svozil-706-6427709 December 2022
The plot has too many dramaturgic twists to be consistent. In particular, the end appears construed. It feels like a rollercoaster ride. There are too many turns that cannot be tied together into a consistent narrative. This may leave you almost betrayed by the story.

And yet it is entertaining and thought-provoking; so I gave it a five of ten.

But beware: you might feel betrayed at the end.

Somehow related to this, in the Rosenhan experiment the validity of psychiatric diagnosis was tested. It was conducted by a Stanford University professor, and published by the journal "Science" under the title "On Being Sane in Insane Places" in 1973. The alleged "patients" simulated hallucinations to enter psychiatric clinics. They acted normally afterwards. The great majority of those persons were diagnosed to mentally sick by the mental hospitals.

The sweet mess
maria37715 December 2022
The sweet mess it is. I missed that depth and suspense that I usually find in European movies.

This movie started quite well actually: excellent dialogues, plus, it seemed that the psychological development of the characters would be solid (slow burn). Anyhow, the plot starts melting rapidly, it becomes boring. I don't want to spoil this for you, but, if you ask me, this movie is overrated and there are plenty of excellent Spanish movies. Watch this only if you are having very long weekend. Sorry, I wish I had something nicer to say about this drama/thriller. It may be that I expect too much from spanish movies, because, in general, I find them spicy and intriguing.

6.5/10. Recommended but don't watch the last 10 minutes
athanasiosze3 January 2023
The last 10 minutes are terrible. Up until then, this was a 7/10-7.5/10 movie. Some things were unplausible. A slight suspension of disbelief was required in order for the viewer to enjoy it but i didn't mind it, because this was a good drama mystery movie. There are not many good mystery movies nowadays (There are some fine art mystery movies though). I didn't find it slow neither boring. Some thrilling moments, some "what the hell" moments, an interesting twist that i didn't expect. In short, a good and interesting movie, even with its flaws.

And then, the ending. Awful, cringey, it was like the director wanted to sabotage his own movie. It's not only the things that happened, but also how that happened. I can't believe this was the legitimate procedure for what happened. I will not say something more for not spoiling this, but i didn't get convinced. It was like a farce, a comedy. The ending almost ruined this movie. If you pretend that this never happend, you will enjoy it. Still, there were 140 minutes of entertaintment. In any case, many people liked the ending. At the end of the day, one should lower their expectations nowadays, when it comes to movies generally, not only for mystery movies. Almost every story has been told, it's not easy to find something newfound, surprising and exciting.
