In Hear Me Out, Primetimer staffers and contributors passionately espouse their pet theories, spicy takes, and even the occasional galaxy-brain idea.
TV is in a high school show depression, as multiple Primetimer contributors have pointed out. With the end of Never Have I Ever and former teen show haven The CW pivoting to content aimed at older demographics, including Gen X, it's hard to think of a show about high school students that is keeping everyone at attention.
Yes, technically there is The Summer I Turned Pretty but half of the young cast are college students and it's not really about high school politics or turmoil. It's about beach house drama and romance. There is a beacon of hope for the high school TV drama though, rising through the clutter of the streaming wars as a bingeable New Deal for the dying genre: Heartbreak High. ...

Director Leigh Janiak and the Netflix streaming service brought us a really fun horror event back in the summer of 2021 with the Fear Street trilogy. Three films that were filmed back-to-back-to-back and then released over the course of three weeks – those films being Fear Street Part One: 1994, Fear Street Part Two: 1978, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666. It was an instant franchise, and had the potential to lead to many more films… because, after all, author R.L. Stine has written over 100 books that have been published under the various Fear Street banners. A while back, Scott Stuber, the head of Netflix Film, said they were developing a new standalone Fear Street project. Then Stine took to social media to reveal that the fourth Fear Street movie would be based on his 1992 book The Prom Queen… and now Fear Street: Prom Queen has a cast! Netflix has announced (via Deadline) that the...

These days, watching teen dramas feels a little like taking a trip to the library. Studios have always loved established IP, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that so many of today’s biggest YA shows are based on books. There’s Netflix’s Heartstopper, Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, the recently canceled but still wildly popular Shadow and Bone, and the upcoming We Were Liars, to name just a few. Even Paramount+’s School Spirits was adapted from a not-yet published graphic novel. In recent years, Hollywood has also begun tapping into a new kind of literary source that just might hold the key to the future of teen dramas: BookTok.

Freevee isn’t going away, Amazon says.
With Amazon’s Prime Video launch of ads by default last month, rumors and speculation have heated up that the tech giant would no longer have a strategic need for Freevee — its free, ad-supported streaming service that is separate from Prime Video. A Feb. 21 report by Adweek, citing anonymous sources, said that Amazon will “sunset” Freevee, likely in the second quarter and possibly before the NewFronts in late April.
Asked for comment, Amazon said the Adweek report is inaccurate.
“There are no changes to Freevee,” the rep said in an email to Variety. “Amazon Freevee remains an important streaming offering providing both Prime and non-Prime customers thousands of hit movies, shows, and originals, all for free.”

Taylor Swift Changes Profile Pics to Black-and-White, Possibly Teasing reputation (Taylor’s Version)
Taylor Swift has changed all of her profile pictures across social media to black-and-white, prompting speculation that she may be teasing the release of reputation (Taylor’s Version). Update: After she won the award for Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights at the 2024 Grammy Awards, Swift made an unexpected announcement: she will be releasing a “brand new” album, The Tortured Poets Department, on April 19th.
The mysterious move was noticed on Sunday morning, when eagle-eyed Swifties reported that Swift’s profile pictures — a shot of her from the artwork of Midnights — were switched out for black-and-white versions. If Swifties’ cryptographic skills are on-point, this could be a reference to the black-and-white aesthetics of Swift’s 2017 release, reputation.
Backing Swifties’ case, there have been murmurs of a forthcoming reputation re-release for a few weeks. For starters, since the arrival of 1989 (Taylor’s Version) last October, reputation and Swift’s self-titled debut...

Most of us can agree that TV shows thrive on their romantic storylines, but over the years love triangles have increasingly taken over TV’s romantic storylines and divided fans.
Iconic love triangles have become a commonly used trope to hook viewers in. There is nothing like declaring who the heroine should be with and having to stick with them through the rollercoaster of intense declarations of love and breakups. But despite how annoying and cliché love triangles can be, they lead to some of the best TV moments. So, naturally we decided to take a look at TV’s most infuriating love triangles.

Spoiler alert: This contains spoilers from Season 1 of “My Life With the Walter Boys,” now streaming on Netflix, as well as the book of the same name.
Who doesn’t love a love triangle? If the “My Life With the Walter Boys” audience is any indication, millions do. The new series, based on Ali Novak’s 2014 book, earned 7.5 million total views in its first four days on Netflix. It has also earned several comparisons to other popular teen dramas, but showrunner Melanie Halsall isn’t worried about that.
The story follows 15-year-old Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez), who moves from New York City to Colorado after the sudden death of her parents and sister. Now living with her mother’s best friend and her ten sons, Jackie finds herself interested in two brothers, while also trying to stay focused on her goal of getting into Princeton — and navigating an entirely new world.

The world of teen rom-com is a gift that keeps giving and giving, even when we’re not really asking for it. I could say it feels like the genre has become oversaturated, but that would feel like an understatement because of the rate at which Ott platforms keep churning these out. But as I complain, I’m reminded of the comfort that some of these shows provide. While high school dramas can focus on many different subjects, most of the content revolves around teen romance. Specifically, there’s an entire list of shows that involve a very intelligent and organized girl (can’t relate) with multiple (perfectly handsome) love interests. Maybe this is a fantasy of the millennials writing these books (since TV isn’t ever original anymore), the ones who grew up watching shows that emulated the line “If he tugs at your ponytail, he likes you,” or...

When it comes to teen TV, there’s truly nothing that can make or break a show quite like a love triangle. Whether it’s Dawson/Pacey/Joey in Dawson’s Creek, or Conrad/Jeremiah/Belly in The Summer I Turned Pretty, love triangles are popular because they tap into an audience’s desire for competition and community. With two potential love interests to choose from, the act of watching a series becomes a game in itself as viewers place their bets on their choice of ship. And from a pure storytelling perspective, love triangles are an easy way to stir up drama and emotional conflict for the protagonist.

When a classmate learns that new girl Jackie (Nikki Rodriguez) has recently moved in with the Walter family, she practically squeals with excitement. “You’re like the luckiest girl in this whole school,” she gushes, describing Jackie’s situation as “boy heaven.”
The comment is more than a little tactless, considering Jackie was only taken in by the Walters after losing her entire family in a car accident. But it’s also an accurate diagnosis of the fantasy that Netflix’s My Life With the Walter Boys is meant to represent, in which prim and pretty Jackie finds herself living among all the most eligible teenage bachelors in town. Alas, dull characters and sluggish pacing put a damper on the daydream before it ever has a chance to properly ignite.

The intent of THR‘s annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Showrunners is to provide an accurate state of the TV union — a rundown of the writer-producers selling in an increasingly fraught media climate, making culturally relevant and awards-friendly shows and serving the masses at a time when consensus entertainment has all but vanished. It’s also a great opportunity to pick some brains.
Those showrunners who made the 2023 list were polled on a variety of subjects. If Suits can become a streaming hit years after ending, what other shows deserve a similar fate? What IP are they dying to get their hands on? What’s already a pressing issue for the next WGA contract negotiation with the studios? And if they found themselves with a burner social media account, what would they do with it?

Exclusive: Wiip has snapped up rights to Adamtine, a horror graphic novel by award-winner Hannah Berry, to develop for film.
Returning to his feature roots after exec producing HBO’s Emmy-winning miniseries Mare of Easttown, as well as its political drama White House Plumbers, Mark Roybal will produce alongside wiip’s Paul Lee and Nate Winslow. Berry will serve as an executive producer.
In Adamtine, four strangers on the last train home, all with their own connections to a serial killer, are stalked by a sneaking, shapeless evil with nowhere to run. The end of the 2023 actors’ strike seems to have opened the floodgates on promotions — the last 24 hours have been packed with trailers and teasers for upcoming series, including Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg’s TV reunion and the latest adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
A quirky spy drama, an urgent documentary short, and Netflix’s answer to The Summer I Turned Pretty round out our favorite trailers of the week.
Netflix’s Geeked Week is in full swing, offering sneak peeks and more info on the streamer’s biggest genre properties. The new Avatar: The Last Airbender is easily one of the most anticipated titles, even if Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop recently made viewers leery of live-action adaptations. But the trailer for the new series based on Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko’s animated show, which premiered in 2005 on Nickelodeon, has an equal sense of wonder and foreboding.
