Harrowing & gripping

Height of the battle of Peleliu. The island they later decided that they could have gone around. The Japanese changed tactics but didn't inform the U. S Marines. Confusion, brutal death, young men fighting with acute PTSD. War is Hell.

Not without some rougher moments

Warning: Spoilers
Broadly speaking, this episode is very good, depicting warfare at its most brutal, with hordes of American infantrymen massacred by the Japanese artillery, in a bit of a reversal of the prior episodes (although Americans still win). However, I've had a few niggles. The water reservoir scene was quite random, and nobody seemed too worried about the guys who have already had their fill; the corpse-looting scene dragged on for way too long, and I certainly don't get what it was supposed to show us; I found it a bit hilarious how much concern was given about the wounding of a named character vs woundings of dozens more unnamed ones; the stream of corpsmen being blown up right in front of Leckie eventually became hilarious; the killing of the screaming guy seemed arbitrary (how likely is it that events would've played out that way?); and isn't "Sledgehammer" a bit of a corny nickname for a guy named "Sledge" (yeah, I get it, that's what it was in reality, just saying)?..

Aside from the opening scene with the parents no one cares about, great stuff.
