Valentine’s Day might be about flowers, chocolates, and romance – but in horror, love often leads to obsession, betrayal, and bloody revenge. With slasher thrills, supernatural hauntings, or twisted tales of doomed romance, horror movies set around love and relationships add an extra layer of intensity. Interestingly, horror movies that use romance as a device go right back to the origins of horror cinema, intertwining desire with thrills and kills.
For those who prefer their Valentine’s Day with a side of terror, we’ve rounded up the best horror films to watch on February 14th. These movies prove that sometimes, love doesn’t just break your heart – it rips it out.

Nicholas Hoult can work with 5000 rats on Nosferatu but he draws the line at fake ice cream. Hoult shared his experience of being given fake ice cream for a scene and recalled how he acted like a diva and refused to eat it. Interestingly, a few days earlier, he shared another story where he worked in a disgusting situation with almost 5000 rats.

Actor Nicholas Hoult is fresh off the success of Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu remake and the positive reactions to James Gunn’s Superman trailer. As a result, 2025 promises to be a big year for Hoult as he will step into the shoes of Lex Luthor when the latter movie flies into theaters in Summer. At the same time, one of his hilarious social media interactions has resurfaced.

A critically acclaimed thriller starring Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult is getting a VOD release. A recent interview conducted by Vanity Fair has helped me to appreciate Nicholas Hoult's casting as Lex Luthor in Superman, and it largely comes down o how jealous Hugh Grant is about the younger actors' performances. The Dcu began with the release of Creature Commandos, but they have yet to make their theatrical debut. However, Superman has already been filmed, with much of the casting revealed, and editing well under way.
Despite this, it has been a challenge to get my head around the casting of Nicholas Hoult as the primary villain, Lex Luthor. In the past, there have been some truly spectacular actors cast in the role, such as Michael Rosenbaum in Smallville, and Michael Cudlitz in Superman & Lois, but the movie castings haven't always lived up to expectations. Love stories between humans and monsters have a long history, inspiring various movies throughout cinematic history. Del Toro's masterpiece, The Shape of Water, is a modern take on beauty-and-beast tales, winning accolades for its romantic storyline. Lisa Frankenstein and Warm Bodies offer unique twists on the human-monster romance genre, each with their own charm and appeal.
Guillermo del Toro's lovely dark fairy tale The Shape of Water features a romance between a human and an amphibious man, but certain other movies will also fulfill those looking for human-monster love stories. The teaser for Robert Eggers’ new film, ‘Nosferatu,’ dropped today, and the featured cast is stacked with an impressive list of talent. Eggers, who first hit the scene with the sinister 2015 film ‘The VVitch,’ has made a name for himself as a director who uses period-specific style to transport audiences to unfamiliar territories, from a desolate lighthouse in Nova Scotia to the brutal countryside of 10th century Iceland. But its the grounded performances from his talented casts that truly make Eggers’ films so memorable. If you’ve checked out the ‘Nosferatu’ teaser and the cast seemed familiar, IMDb is here to help you remember where you’ve seen these talented actors before.
Lily-Rose Depp
Lily-Rose Depp was most recently seen on Max’s short-lived drama series “The Idol,” where she played a pop star struggling back into the limelight with the help of a notorious nightclub owner. The actress stars in ‘Nosferatu’ as Ellen Hutter, the innocent object of the vampire’s desire.
Nicholas Hoult
‘Nosferatu’ isn’t the first time Nicholas Hoult has explored the realms of the undead. The talented British actor was the title role in the 2023 horror-comedy ‘Renfield,’ starred as a mute-but-caring zombie in ‘Warm Bodies,’ and played a key role as the half-life war boy Nux in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road.’ Now, he’ll step into the role of Thomas Hutter, husband to the afflicted Ellen Hutter played by Lily-Rose Depp.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson
Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Friedrich Harding is a ship merchant, which is likely a reinvention of the character played by Georg H. Schnell in the 1922 silent film version of ‘Nosferatu.’ If the actor seems familiar, it may be from his performance as Brian Tyree Henry’s twin brother Tangerine in last year’s action flick ‘Bullet Train,’ his supporting role as Pietro Maximoff in multiple Marvel movies, or his recent turn as a self-absorbed film star in ‘The Fall Guy.’
Willem Dafoe
Willem Dafoe is no stranger to playing vampires. The Academy Award-nominated actor starred in 2000’s ‘Shadow of the Vampire’ where he portrayed Max Schreck, the actor who played Nosferatu in the original silent film. You probably recognize Dafoe from some of his most famous 100+ acting credits, including last year’s ‘Poor Things’ and his two previous collaborations with Robert Eggers, ‘The Lighthouse’ and ‘The Northman.’
Ralph Ineson
The unmistakable deep voice of Ralph Ineson can be heard warning us that “he is coming.” The BAFTA Award nominee starred as Anya Taylor-Joy’s father in Robert Eggers’ first film, ‘The VVitch’ and lent his talents to the title role in A24’s ‘The Green Knight.’ You may have seen him this year as a priest on a mission in ‘The First Omen.’ In ‘Nosferatu,’ the actor will play Dr. Wilhelm Sievers, a role we can only assume will have to deal with the aftermath of the vampire’s attacks.
Bill Skarsgård
Although he is only shown as a silhouette in the trailer, Bill Skarsgård is set to star as the vampire Count Orlok, whose hunger for Ellen Hutter drives the story. Skarsgård has a history with the horror genre, playing Pennywise the clown in the two-part remake of ‘It’ and delivering a memorably unsettling performance in the indie hit ‘Barbarian.’ The Swedish actor’s horror bona fides continue to expand this year, as he takes on the role of Eric Draven in the remake of ‘The Crow.’
Emma Corrin
Also starring in ‘Nosferatu’ is Emma Corrin, known for her roles in Netflix’s “The Crown” as Princess Diana, as Darby Hart in “A Murder at the End of the World,” and in just a few weeks she’ll hit the big screen alongside Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ In ‘Nosferatu,’ she’ll play Anna Harding, wife to Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Friedrich Harding and likely friend to Lily-Rose Depp’s Ellen Hutter.

Nicholas Hoult's past failures may be overshadowed by his upcoming role in the acclaimed horror remake Nosferatu. Renfield, despite mixed reviews, saw commendable performances by Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage. Directed by Robert Eggers, Nosferatu promises to showcase Nicholas Hoult's talent in a new light, with a stellar cast and critical acclaim expected.
Nicholas Hoult's recent collaboration with Nicolas Cage was a $65 million box office flop, but the actor might be able to fix the damage with his upcoming horror remake. Although Nicholas Hoult started his acting career at the young age of six, the actor did not land his breakthrough role until his early teenage years. After starring in the acclaimed coming-of-age UK drama Skins, Hoult gained even wider recognition, paving the way for his future roles in movies like A Single Man, Clash of the Clans, X-Men: First Class, and Warm Bodies.

Nicholas Hoult is sharing some insight into his preparations to play Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman.
The actor stopped by the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast to chat about his acting career, including the highly-anticipated movie, which began production last week, per the director.
Hoult looked back at his time auditioning for the classic villain, saying Gunn has an “ability to keep things fun and alive and try things in the moment and be like, just shouting out from the monitors, ‘Say this line. Valentine’s Day may be a day of love, but there’s something about fear and murder that really gets the heart racing. Forget the countless Christmas rom-coms or Technicolor musical romances out there; sometimes, the most swoon-worthy romance is one between a human and a literal monster.
On the surface, horror and romance are two genres that shouldn’t mix well together; one exposes the worst and most disturbing cruelty humanity has to offer, while the other is meant to show the most tender and beautiful feelings we have. But as long as horror has been a genre, it’s been mixed with romance to frequently stellar results. Some of the earliest horror monsters, like vampires, are inherently sexual beings: their powers clear metaphors for intercourse and their ability to allure and entice humans with their beauty a key part of what makes them dangerous. Sex and romance isn’t always the same thing,...

Author Mary Shelley has inspired horror creators since the 1800s, but never like Lisa Frankenstein. Zelda Williams brings Diablo Cody's undead teen romance to life like the second coming of early Tim Burton, harvesting an uncanny gothic romance from spare human parts. It's caught somewhere between Riverdale, Edward Scissorhands, and Warm Bodies, a good crossroads to call home. Williams and Cody inject surges of teen girl empowerment through their morbidly adorable Frankenstein tale, which can feel like a hammy 1980s sitcom, yet transcends expectations with an avalanche of campy, almost wall-breaking silliness.

Actors and married couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco previously collaborated on Franco’s feature directorial debut, The Rental, in 2020. Now, the pair are set to co-star in a new horror film, Together.
Variety reports that the horror movie feature hails from first-time writer/director Michael Shanks.
Together will explore “the horror of co-dependency told in a unique way,” though additional plot details remain under wraps at this time. That Brie and Franco are married should add an interesting layer to the co-dependency horror, which might fall under the “unique” descriptor of this horror feature.
Brie appeared in Scream 4 before starring in Franco’s The Rental, which saw two couples celebrating a weekend getaway, only to face grueling terror when an imminent threat forces them to expose well-kept secrets. The couple also appeared together onscreen in ensemble comedy The Little Hours and A24’s The Disaster Artist.

Secret Shakespeare adaptations make his works more accessible and reimagine them in new, relevant ways. Movies like "West Side Story" and "My Own Private Idaho" are examples of creative adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. "The Lion King" and "Warm Bodies" are surprising adaptations of "Hamlet" and "Romeo and Juliet," showcasing how Shakespeare's stories can be changed.
It is no secret that the writings of William Shakespeare, completed so many centuries ago, still have a significant impact on the stories that are made today, but sometimes, the Bard's influence is so great that a movie may seem like its own individual story, but in fact, is secretly an adaptation of Shakespeare's work. Secret Shakespeare adaptations are far from being new, having been made since movies first began, however there was definitely an increase in these types of films in the 2000s. Secret Shakespeare adaptations are far from being new, having been made since movies first began, however there was definitely an increase in these types of films in the 2000s. Either way, these movies are all great but not always...

A new trailer for Zelda Williams' feature directorial debut "Lisa Frankenstein" just dropped, and it looks like exactly the dark gothic rom-com we didn't know we needed. Due out in time for Valentine's Day, the movie looks like one part "Warm Bodies," one part "Heathers," and one part "Jennifer's Body." You'll likely be hearing the latter comparison a lot, given that "Lisa Frankenstein" is penned by Diablo Cody, the same sardonic mastermind behind "Juno," "Tully," and the aforementioned Megan Fox-led cult horror-comedy favorite.
"Lisa Frankenstein" stars Kathryn Newton, who's already proven herself a great, game teen horror-comedy lead with the 2020 body swap film "Freaky." Cole Sprouse co-stars as the dashing corpse she reanimates, and the new trailer reveals that he'll likely spend the majority of the film communicating only through grunts and glances. It's probably not exactly a "May December" level performance, but it still (somehow) feels like a...

Nicholas Hoult, star of “The Great” and “Warm Bodies,” in in talks to play archvillain Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy,” TheWrap has learned.
The actor will face off against David Corenswet’s Man of Steel. He will also presumably menace and/or imperil Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane in the upcoming DC Studios tentpole.
Hoult steps into the shoes of previous actors like Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey and Jesse Eisenberg who have brought the character of Lex Luthor to life on the big screen in previous “Superman” films.
In the DC Comics, Lex Luthor fancies himself the hero in his own warped narrative, justified in abusing his genius and vast resources to clear the stage of alien interlopers like Superman. So when he debuts his latest invention—a battlesuit or deadly nanobots perhaps—the city holds its breath, knowing calamity follows in the wake of this antagonist extraordinaire.

The Man of Steel has found his arch-nemesis. Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor in the upcoming James Gunn film “Superman: Legacy,” according to a report from Deadline.
IndieWire has reached out to representatives of Warner Bros. for comment.
According to Deadline, the casting process for Luthor began after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended on November 9, with casting on pause since the strike began in July. However, Hoult was in the mix for “Superman: Legacy” beforehand; the actor previously auditioned for the lead role of Clark Kent during early screen tests for the film. Hoult was one of three actors to make the final round of tests along with Tom Brittney and David Corenswet, who was ultimately cast as the lead this past June, along with “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” lead Rachel Brosnahan as Superman’s love interest Lois Lane.

Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron have gotten to usher in a new era of action thanks to their efforts from both 87Eleven and 87North productions with their respective films, John Wick and Atomic Blonde. Both films aimed to combine the chaos and extended sequences of gunplay action with raw, gritty martial arts in a stylized manner. Additionally, Seth Rogen had dabbled a bit in crossing over into action with Pineapple Express and The Green Hornet with various responses.
It’s recently been reported by industry insider, Daniel Richtman, that Universal is rumored to be making Spy House. Spy House is set to star Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen in a mystery film where the plot involves, “When a group of spies go to a safe house after a job gone wrong, they realize there’s a killer in the house.” Rogen is set to direct with frequent collaborator...

Shakespeare's plays have had a profound cultural impact and have been adapted into various forms of media, including movies and TV shows. Many movies, such as "Warm Bodies" and "She's the Man," have been inspired by Shakespeare's plays, with unique twists on the original stories. Movies like "The Lion King" and "10 Things I Hate About You" are successful adaptations of Shakespeare's works, with clear similarities to the original plays.
The works of William Shakespeare have served as inspiration for many other literary works, TV shows, movies, and more, and there are many movies that, instead of being true adaptations, were brilliantly inspired by the works of Shakespeare. William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest writer in history, and his plays are still the subject of many studies and continue to be performed all over the world. The Bard’s works include 39 plays, 154 sonnets, and three long narrative poems,...

We seem to have run the gamut of the zombie apocalypse film. Like the possession film, it’s getting to be more and more difficult for filmmakers to breathe new life into the sub-genre, with only a few managing to eke out moments of true inspiration. Enter Canadian filmmaking trio Rkss‘ horror comedy We Are Zombies, which introduces a world in which zombies exist, but do not crave brains or human flesh. In fact, depending on the circumstances of their death, they may still be fully functioning, and even have the ability to speak. Because of this, zombies are now second-class citizens given the politically correct label of “living-impaired,” with their civil rights constantly under attack. We’ve seen more benign zombie apocalypses like this in things like Warm Bodies, so it’s not as if this is completely original territory, but it’s still nice to see something different than the doom-and-gloom post-apocalyptic wasteland.
