Don't watch sober
amcreb25 January 2020
I watched the first 3 episodes sober and figured what is this crap? I blazed before the last three episodes and it turned it into an amazing show! In short, if you watch it sober it will suck, if you watch it stoned it's pretty damn good.

Weak
adamdaly198523 July 2012
I will hereby remove any Trailer Park Boys influence from my reviewing process and rate this show simply on it's own merit. I will forget that the guys behind 'Drunk and on Drugs Funtime Happy Hour' had helped produce one of the greatest recent comedy shows I have had the pleasure to watch. Because let's face it. The characters in Trailer Park Boys were perfect. They were an ensemble. They all mattered and they were all constructive to the overall quality of the show. I loved everything about the show, from Lahey's continual battle with alcohol and all things sexy, Ricky's take on the English language and his justification of skewed logic and the incredible creation of the character 'Bubbles' to even the most minor of roles. Phil Collins, Jacob, J-Roc, Ray, Trevor, Cory, Lucy, Sarah....they were all so important.

But with this new show there is nothing. Perhaps I just don't 'get it' or maybe I'm never high enough but the show is just poor all round. To those unaware of the plot, J.P, Rob and Mike (Julian, Ricky and Bubbles) are creating a new show but are constantly given some blue drugs created by Doctor Funtime. They get into a number of scrapes and are constantly on the run from a local mafia man and a knife wielding madman amongst other things. Inbetween this ridiculous plot are a number of...well, I suppose i'll call them 'subplots' for now. Basically, it's the boys dressed up as 'characters', much like 'Little Britain' or similar sketch comedy shows. I expect to most, what little humor there is to absorb from them would lie in their appearance. From fat disk jockeys to silly superheroes. There are all of the hallmarks of a costume budget gone wild. In between drugged dazes, the boys find themselves struggling to keep it together, whilst the television network tries in vain to keep on top of the show.

It might sound confusing or just stupid. But that is basically what you will be watching. There is little to laugh about here. A show like this can only work if the characters are watchable, humorous and absorbing. These characters are pointless, bland and definitely not watchable. There is no sign of cohesive plot, no apparent sign of comedy and pretty much nothing to keep you watching.

If a TPB fan is about to embark on this, please don't. You'll only be terribly disappointed. I imagine this is a show that can only have been produced whilst on drugs, yet I think even those higher than a boeng 747 will struggle to enjoy this show.

A mild 3/10

Only one review, and it's bad!?
ilikefences9 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Stumbled across this having devoured all the TPB stuff i could find and needing something funny to fill the hole. Felt compelled to write a positive review to balance things out a bit, as there is only one review at the time of writing.

I found the show itself initially baffling, until Pat Roach runs in telling the boys they've been drugged, and so has the rest of the cast, who now believe they are the characters they're being paid to play. The show jumps between genres, one moment a mob flick , then an old-school WWII story, or superhero gang, or mutinous pirates, the list goes on. The impressive thing is that they manage to weave the overlying story of a Mad Scientist drugging everyone throughout all the absurd genre changes; so a compelling mystery\thriller emerges amongst the mix of fantastic subtle humour and lots of c*ck\sh*t jokes.

I think the other review says they don't have the acting chops to pull off the characters, but i'd have to disagree. The mob characters were particularly fantastic. Mike Smith as the grand-daddy was down right scary. Of course you can tell it's them, and of course they hammed it up at times with certain characters, but that's where some of the humour comes from, as was the way much more prominently in TPB.

I'm not saying everybody should love this, or if you don't find it funny then you don't "get it". But I found it hilarious, creative story telling, that was different enough from TPB so it didn't feel like they were coasting on past success. I have no idea if there will ever be any more Happy Funtime Hour, but i certainly hope so.

OMG - I lasted 10 minutes of this train wreck
foothill_warrior27 August 2018
Someone needs to hunt down the server drive this is on - burn it and scatter the ashes. This is the worst piece of crap I have every seen. I loved (some of) trailer Park Boys when they kept to their roots, but here they seemed to have slapped together an accidental, make it up as you go plotless mess - maybe because they stumbled into an unattended makeup trailer and went nuts with it. If the "plot" eventually makes some sense there is no way you would want to stay with the bad hammy acting and absurd makeup long enuf to figure it out. Sorry TPB fans - this is a fail.

Simply Brilliant!
robert-977-70612717 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
**This review may contain spoilers** After reading the few reviews posted, I had to weigh in and say that I think this show is exceptionally brilliant. Sure, it is full of c*ck jokes and other low-brow humor, but when you consider the range of styles incorporated in the filming, the range of characters (almost all played by John Paul Tremblay, Mike Smith and Robb Wells), the plot twists, and the many cinematic devices used throughout, you have to give credit to JP, Robb and Mike for creating something so outrageous, so dynamic, so non-linear and so hilarious. I can understand too if you don't like their humor, but I think they absolutely succeed in depicting a totally crazed drug-fueled adventure. It reminds me very much of (and I don't say this lightly) The Beastie Boys singular album "Paul's Boutique" in the way is totally shatters every conception or idea you might have about how a comedy show can be made, filmed, and edited. It's a bit of Monty Python meets Ren and Stimpy with a little Church of the Sub-genius thrown in for good measure. It's up there with any other great surrealist work of art. I completely admit that if this isn't your "thing", you will probably not like it, but there is nothing stupid or poorly thought out about anything in this series. If you are fan of the Trailer Park Boys, you will be familiar with the general kind of humor you will likely encounter, but let the unique qualities of this series speak for themselves and most of all, enjoy the ride!!

Novel concept, ineffective execution.
HagenSteele9 September 2012
This show boldly attempts to use a multitude of random sketch comedy bits to forward a singular story plot.

They fail.

Miserably.

There is a fine line in the world of comedy between ridiculous = FUNNY and ridiculous = STUPID, and this show doesn't just cross that line, it LEAPS across that line into the realm of stupid. Poor timing, poor transitions, and a lack of coherence all work against any potential comedy that may be developed in any given segment. While the individual characters created in each skit COULD indeed be developed into funny stand alone characters and comedy skits, the attempt to merge them into a running story line just doesn't work as executed.

Comedy is a hard genre to tackle, and while I applaud the attempt to mix a sketch comedy format with a running story line, the approach used in the show is simply not effective, and, frankly, not funny.

2 of 10 stars.

laugh-free
phenomynouss4 January 2020
This is almost fascinating to watch just for the amazing amount of effort put into cramming a multitude of seemingly unrelated "sketches" into one overarching storyline, as well as the effort made of using the main three guys, Smith, Tremblay, and Wells in almost every major role under heaps and gobs of makeup and prosthetics.

The show itself is complete and utter garbage, never intentionally funny and rather tedious when focusing on the WW2 soldier segments or the super hero segments. Everything else is mostly tolerable, not bad enough to be enjoyable, and just flat out bad all around. Most of the entertainment I had was trying to discern which of the three was playing what character under the heavy makeup and prosthetic effects.

Unfortunately they went and put Smith and Wells in blackface and Tremblay in asianface for one group of pointless characters.

unwatchable
talllwoood1330 August 2021
This is similar to when Tommy Wiseau found out everyone was laughing at him and he decided to put out The House That Dripped Blood On Alex and other bad for the sake of being bad movies to capture that lightning in the bottle again.

All the skits are just awful, my brothers friend who is a huge trailer park boys fan said turn it off. That is how bad it was. I honestly wonder what kind of substances you'd have to be on to legitimately enjoy this and be able to binge watch this.

Funny as hell
kellymikeh10 September 2018
It took me some time to get used to what was actually going on, because there are several characters (on drugs). But I found myself laughing my ass off. I watched about 5 episodes and discovered that the boys are quite brilliant in their own horrible way. You have to give it more than just 10 minutes.

Its just fun!!

Pure comic genius.
rgeauxracing27 July 2015
This is undoubtedly the most original program for years. Not since the original SNL cast skits, Monty Python, League of Gentlemen has anything this outrageously creative come to pass. Surpasses Trailer Park Boys by far. Some of the jokes are very transparent, but, hey they had a time slot to fill--then there were the drugs! The various characters are brilliant, and Smith finally gets to shine.

Additionally, Maury Chaykin ("call me Potatoes, Potatoes O'Brien") in his final role, apparently being smuggled out of the hospital for the final scenes, then returned to the hospital where he passed away from terminal cancer the following day.

Genius, pure comic genius! But, if you haven't the slightest fondness of slap-stick, you may not enjoy this much. I'm puzzled why this is described as having 2 episodes when there are 6.

I hope we see something more from the Boys, it's been a while. Cheers 10 out of 10.

HILARIOUS!
KalkiNozomi21 July 2019
This show is absolutely hilarious. Anyone who's been drunk and high while being happy can relate. There are so many meme's from this show it's not even funny. I personally love all the characters, the weird setting, the messed up town people. The sexual jokes are disgusting enough to make me cringe, but that's the funny part. The story makes a lot of sense and if you have a hard time following it, then I think something wrong with you *Chinese accent*.

After you watch this show the only thing you can think about is eating hallucinogenic blue glue.. Anyone who loves the boys work with TBP may not love this, because it's much more offense and raunchy. Over all I give it 10 stars for making me rofl, fun story, good music, interesting characters. I think you should give it a try, and make sure to watch it High & on drugs.. Haha!

PS: The boys act so good some characters I didn't realize were them until I watched it a few times and checked the credits :)
