Season One

I'm not really much of a sitcom guy. Besides the animated "Family Guy", the only other sitcom I've ever been able to stomach on a weekly basis has been "The Office" (which I absolutely loved). One night while watching television, however, I stumbled across a few episodes of "Modern Family". I laughed out loud on a number of different occasions each episode, and thus decided to give the entire first season a try. It did not let me down!

The basis of Modern Family is simple: the show focuses on three families that are all related to each other:

-Gay partners Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) & Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and their adopted baby Lily.

-Goofy Phil (Ty Burrell), his wife Claire (Julie Bowen), and their children Haley (Sarah Hyland), the cute ditzy one, Alex (Ariel Winter), the conservative smart one, and Luke (Nolan Gould), the clueless one.

-Family patriarch Jay (Ed O'Neill), his trophy wife Gloria (Sofia Vergara), and their son Manny (Rico Rodriguez).

What makes the show so great is that the deep ensemble cast plays so well off of each other. There is also "something going on" with the large crew, and the fact that there is blood relation between the families adds an extra layer of emotional depth. Of course, living up to its sitcom name, "Modern Family" is also just doggone funny! There is something unique and humorous about every single character.

Perhaps most importantly, everyone can find something to relate to in the show. That is what made "The Office" so great, and that kind of story/joke telling bleeds over into this show as well. This is just a take on family life instead of being at the office.

Simply put, I am glad that I gave "Modern Family" a try. I already have ordered Season Two and am looking forward to laughing at the continuing adventures of the three families.

Series 1 - Very impressive overall

Warning: Spoilers
Modern Family was already on Series 6 when I decided to give it a go. I watched a random episode from Series 2 and found it to be quite funny even though I had no idea of how each character was related. I decided to watch it from the beginning and I had such a blast. I watched all of series 1 in 4 days and I'm now already on my way through series 2.

Each episode has made me laugh, which certainly can't be said for all comedies out there. I love that it is done in a mocumentary style and characters often look into the camera to show their reactions. We also see the characters talking in to the camera giving us a different perspective which is also really funny at times, especially when they explain something completely different to how we see it.

I love the whole family, each character brings something to the table. We have the Dunphy's, Phil and Claire and their 3 children Haley, Alex & Luke. Phil is that goofy kind of dad and so far he is my favourite character. Claire is also funny in her own way trying to the best for the 3 children who sometimes just don't want to listen. Claire's brother is Mitchell who has just adopted a baby daughter with his boyfriend Cameron. I find the relationship between these two hilarious, the are so different but so right for each other and provide plenty of laughs. Mitchell and Claire's Dad is Jay who is married to a younger and very hot Colombian woman, Gloria who also has a son called Manny. I just love how the whole family interacts with each other and it feels like from the start, we the viewer are getting to know the characters just as much as they are getting to know each other.

As I said each episode has made me laugh a lot and it's not one of those comedies that relies on swearing or toilet humour. It's a very fresh and unique comedy which stellar writing and great comedic timing and chemistry from all of the cast.

My favourite episodes of Series 1 would be the final 3 episodes as we saw a bit of continuation in these episodes, but overall each episode has been great with something different happening all the time.

Very impressed with the first Series and can't wait to watch more, I'm sure I will be up to date by the time Series 7 airs. If you are unsure, just give it a chance and like me you may not be able to stop watching.

Season 1: Consistently funny despite being a tad too polished and a little bit too sentimental at its core

Modern Family was on its third season I think by the time I had heard enough to make me watch it for myself. I wasn't sure quite what to expect though because I had heard some people say it was quick fire in its delivery of all types of jokes, while others suggested it was more of a traditional sitcom albeit with the family units changed up to suit demographics for today. What I found was, to my tastes, something that seemed to sit in the middle of these two places, providing enough of the comedy to carry the more traditional lessons and "coming together" of families that one expects from this.

I enjoyed it but for me the sow just seemed to lack that little bit of edge in the humour, in the plots and in the characters; there is a lot of polish here that didn't always work in the favour of the show. It manifests itself in many ways but mostly it is evident in the gloss of the presentation – this doesn't ever look like a show in its first season settling in, it always feels like a big network comedy which was designed and made from the start. This is not necessarily a criticism though, but it did strike me as odd to see something hitting the ground with so much weight behind it. The plots and characters are pretty good; I liked the modern collection of characters and relationship – the show keeps them human but also allows them to be exaggerated for the sake of the laughs. The downside of this is that too often it does play a very straight bat with them – with sentimental lessons and interactions that don't always ring true; I would have liked a bit more bite to it at times, but this isn't all the time and mostly it is funny enough to carry it off.

The actors are mostly great. Burrell is a great clown and his character plays it well against Bowen. Ferguson and Stonestreet are equally funny and are written well enough so that they can be seen as modern but without ever pushing the mainstream audience away (this is not Six Feet Under after all). O'Neill continues to be a steadfast of the genre and his character here is suited to him as it is equally grumpy and also good humoured. Vergara has a better comic touch than one might expect from someone who effortlessly stunning; likewise Rodriquez leads the child cast well with an odd but funny character. The various guests cameos are impressive on paper but generally they just seem odd due to how big the names are – again an example of the resources behind the show, but generally they don't add as much as they detract.

Overall, this first season may not have delivered the edge and laughs that I was looking for due to how polished and sentimental it could be, but mostly it is funny enough to carry the aspects I didn't so much care for. More than good enough to make me come back for the second season though.

Pretty in white

Warning: Spoilers
Phil is getting ready to go see the L.A. Lakers in action. He stuffs his jacket pockets with candy he will eat at the game. Claire has arranged for a family portrait for the afternoon. Claire asks Phil to try his new white pants. Everyone is going to wear that color. She is in a quandary because everything has to be perfect for the shoot. Claire realize the staircase shot is in danger because Phil neglected to fix one step. Since she has a deadline, Claire decides to undertake the repair job, which turns out to be a disaster.

Phil arrive at Jay's. Alex is going instead of Luke who has an assignment for school in which he must interview people that lived in the 1960s, to get their perception of what it was to live in that era. Gloria is going to the game instead of Jay. Manny is also going. As they arrive at the arena, Phil is surprised to see Kobe Bryant close enough to talk to him. During the game, couples are spotted and shown on the screen inside a heart emblem. As the camera turns to Phil and Gloria, they try to ignore the request, but eventually, they must kiss, something that is watched by Claire, who is not amused.

Meanwhile, Cam has an engagement singing Ave Maria at a wedding. He leaves Mitchell alone with Lily. As he leaves, a pigeon enters the house and Mitch goes bananas because he is afraid of the bird. He hides in Lily's room, but he must go to get her the milk. Trying to shoo the bird away, Mitch wrecks the living room throwing things to the pigeon.

Claire changes the setting for the shoot to her father's home. Her house is a mess as well. Getting everyone together turns out to be quite a job. Luke, who is accident prone, has been wrapped in plastic to protect him from getting dirty. The photographer is ready to take the pictures in the patio, but the sprinkler system makes it almost impossible. Luke is sent to turn the water off. The group is not cooperating, so Jay decides he's had it. Exasperated, he throws some dirt on Claire's white blouse, she counter attacks by throwing dirt on him, which triggers a chain reaction. Gloria manages to stay clean, but Claire decides her revenge is to smear her with dirt on her sexy white dress.

Another fun episode in this hilarious sitcom. Jason Winer the spirit behind the success of the series directed the screenplay written by Ilana Wernick. The non-stop enjoyment in watching this chapter is a great testimony to the creative minds behind it.
