Storyline

During the London Blitz of World War II, Catrin Cole is recruited by the British Ministry of Information to write scripts for propaganda films that the public will actually watch without scoffing. In the line of her new duties, Cole investigates the story of two young women who supposedly piloted a boat in the Dunkirk Evacuation. Although it proved a complete misapprehension, the story becomes the basis for a fictional film with some possible appeal. As Cole labors to write the script with her new colleagues such as Tom Buckley, veteran actor Ambrose Hilliard must accept that his days as a leading man are over as he joins the project. Together, this disparate trio must struggle against such complications such as sexism against Cole, jealous relatives, and political interference in their artistic decisions even as London endures the bombs of the enemy. In the face of those challenges, they share a hope to contribute something meaningful in this time of war and in their own lives. Written by Kenneth Chisholm (kchishol@rogers.com)

Quotes

Tom Buckley: It's never for anything. Why do you think that people like films? It's because stories are structured; have a shape, a purpose, a meaning; and when things gone bad they're still a part of a plan; there's a point to them. Unlike life.

A great feel good interesting take on the film industry
15 May 2017 | by alindsay-alSee all my reviews

After seeing the trailer for their finest I did have some interest but I really didn't have particular hopes for this film but I will admit this film really surprised me with how good it is. The premise of the film sees a former secretary get hired to write parts of a big movie during the blitz in WW2. Gemma arterton plays the lead in this film and I thought she was really good in this film, she was a strong female character and you see her trying to thrive in her situation even against the odds and I enjoyed watching it. The best performance in my opinion in this film has to be Sam claflin who I think gives a fantastic performance in this film. He was very sharp talking and fast paced but I also really liked his character in this film and how he progressed throughout the film especially with his chemistry with arterton. Bill nighy is in this film and he does a great job, he plays a pretty pompous actor and he revels in it absolutely nailing the humour he is given but also the heart he has to deliver. Everybody does a great job in this film, Richard e grant is really good in his role, so is Henry Goodman and even the people portraying actors were really believable in there smaller roles. The story is a real easy watch as you see this woman trying to get her voice heard while working with these different types of people. However, this film does suffer from being a little predictable in my opinion, I saw things coming from quite far away and it did hurt the experience a little bit. It is ironic that a film that focuses a lot on screenplay writing has one of my favourite scripts this year. The dialogue is very quick witted and funny but it also nails its drama and romantic parts which really helped elevate this film. The style of the film has some really cool sequence's and I loved seeing arterton and claflin work together writing the film which was my favourite part of the film. However, I do believe this film is a little disjointed with it's storytelling especially for the first act of the film. Their finest is a real surprise of a film in my opinion and I think for any big film fan it should definitely be seen.
