Saw this at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival
"La Pecera" (The Fishbowl) is a story about as cancer spreads, a woman named Noelia's decision to return to her native Puerto Rico, to claim freedom. She reunites with her friends ,family, who are still dealing with the contamination of the U. S. Navy after sixty years of military practices. This is the first Puerto Rico film I have seen and while there are good intentions with this film, the film is a bit uneven.
There are some great camerawork throughout especially scenes from the beach, ocean waters and the nice landscapes of the environment. Great sound design and colors represented as well. The performances from the main lead actress was great and believable. Director Glorimar Marrero Sanchez clearly has good intentions with this film as she is exploring about dealing with cancer and decision making when it came to a certain point in life.
Unfortunately, the film suffers from a narrative that remains simple and a little uneven. The narrative explored some political themes that felt they had no impact and were just mentioned. The characters observed had some interesting moments but they weren't really easy to connect with due to their lack of development and interest. There were also some performances that felt a little underacted and the pacing needs improvement.
Overall, it's a okay film and there are a lot of room for improvement.
