Hip-Hops The Wall
Snoberino26 January 2011
First, my opinion of Kanye West's Runaway is completely unbiased. I normally listen to indie rock, never voluntarily listened to Kanye and never gave it much thought.

Then I stumbled across his website and began to watch the video. I was immediately curious. The story line was intriguing. Slightly confusing at first, but I was definitely interested. The effects were aesthetically pleasing. Selita Ebanks did an amazing (and very sexy) job as The Phoenix. Runaway is a work of art. I would consider it Hip Hops version of (Pink Floyd's) The Wall.

Kanye did a fantastic job. It's not a stereo typical rap video of big booty women, expensive cars and random pit bulls. It's very well thought out, well written, well edited, well acted and the music is amazing.

I also feel the ballerinas should be mentioned as well because that particular scene was incredible and I can't begin to describe it.

I highly recommend watching it for yourself so you can make your own opinion.

Kanye West fuses pop, rap and high-brow art
The_Melancholic_Alcoholic27 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
With this short, West establishes himself as the front-runner of his generation. This short film is surely not for the dumb 'suburban' multiplex crowds. It's clear from the start of the film that he really wanted to make something that stands out

He bravely opens Himself up to criticism of the low kind with the making of this short. It is a risky project, surely in these times, where the social atmosphere is so toxic. And he doesn't make it easy for us to like this particular short. Although the story line is not extremely difficult, West doesn't make it too easy for His viewers either.

And he doesn't make it too easy on himself, when the film opens up with a rather long sequence of West running.

We see a beautiful shot of the sky, where apparently a meteor is gonna fall in a forest. Whether West, driving his BMW, is trying to get to the place where the meteor is gonna fall, or if He is trying to outrun it, is not entirely clear. The car is struck by the meteor, (a moment that could have benefited from a good overhead shot, the only flaw in this film.), and a Phoenix arises from the flames, like Phenixes do. West invites the phoenix, a role by the lovely Selita Ebanks, to his house, where she's confronted with sensationalism of TV-news, upon which He parts with a simple wisdom: "Don't pay attention to the news"

The film then embarks upon a further introduction of Earth customs, amongst which is a formal dinner in a huge hall, with people all dressed in white. Halfway through the meal, Kanye gets up and starts playing one key the piano, with which he calls up an entire ballet company. This is a mix of excellent American and Czech dancers, who subtly show that they are very talented in both classic and modern dance. However, the main dish is a pheasant. This is very upsetting to the phoenix, who perhaps recognizes a fellow bird species, and to whom it probably feels like cannibalism. Imagine if we'd go to another planet and the bird-people try to feed us something which resembles a human?

In the final stages, the phoenix explains to West that she must leave, through fire no less, but West is adamant to stop his new found love.

During the credits, there's an excellent rap which is mindful of the late, great Gil Scott Heron.

The Melancholic Alcoholic.

Warning: Spoilers
Visually and musically mind blowing. This is raw genius Kanye West as a true artist. He produced and wrote most of the songs in the album this short film promotes, and even came up with the concept of the video and directed it. But you don't even have to like hip-hop to enjoy this film because it is different and is not the stereotypical video you expect of a hip-hop artist. Kanye is creatively different from many of his peers.

The video previews many of the songs in the album and it fits very very well to the visuals. It's a perfect combination for your eyes and your ears.

Colors, nature, beauty, modern design, fireworks, dance. It also showcases culture in his own personal perception. If you look close you can see topics of how racism would be if the whites where in the blacks position.

You can also see a beautiful scene where professionally trained ballerinas dance to hip-hop, which in my opinion is very unique and cool to watch. And he even pays tribute to late Michael Jackson in one scene too.

The theme is clear throughout the whole film and it keeps you interested. These 35 min will feel like 10 if you sit down and actually get into it.

WATCH this classic! It will be remembered.

And I give it a 9 because I'm a perfectionist and would edit some little technical/visual details before releasing it, but in essence my vote is a 10.

The discontent that is shown on his face. What it means is not supposed to be finite. It is a love story. It has many versions of songs that it would typically not have. This is true art. A true musical.

However you take this, is totally dependent on yourself. It is filled with symbolization and metaphors, but there is no true way to know what they all actually mean.

A beautiful dark twisted fantasy.

Don't Runaway from this film
calvinhkmay2 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I think that this film should be watched by everyone who has listened to the album and has any interest and/or love of the record.

The film in incredibly engaging and transitions extremely well, start to finish. There is an overarching melancholy emotion portrayed perfectly in Kanye West's minimal, but certain acting. With very few lines, his physical acting creates a character that is understood.

Although Kanye plays a part in the film, he does not represent the protagonist (will refer to it as that from now on) of My Beautiful Dark Twister Fantasy. Instead a new character, the phoenix represents the protagonist. The choice of a phoenix represents his rise from the ashes, as many people thought that he had lost all ability after the release of 808s & Heartbreak.

While the film is called Runaway, the song is in the middle of the film, like in the album. The scene does the same that the song does in the album. It is Kanye recognizing his flaws and telling his close ones to runaway from him. I think that one part of this does falter from the rest of the film, because in this scene it is Kanye in the part of the protagonist, not the phoenix.

The final scene is the emotional peak of the film. Just go watch it.

Kanye Kardashian is a moder faking genius

Hate him or love him.

Kanye for a long time is a creative genius.

This non-gangster rapper owned the super known manipulated billboard charts from all his previous albums. Then Came this Dark beautiful album.

The album was dark yes, I loved the old Kanye but nevertheless the Album was another banger. After this well....i never bought another album from Kanye...which is a kind of lie because I bought the Kanye - Jay-z album and I didn't like it so it didn't listen to it. I have no idea where it is now.

Anyways

Runaway was a long ass music video/musical.

It told a dark story about Kanye and a demon. It had dancing, soul, and magic. The whole production was the best music video I've ever seen. It was both touching, sad and dark all at the same time.

Obviously Kanye can't act but yet he put on an epic show.

Overall, a solid production.

Verdict: This album was probably the last album CD that I ever bought. After this music and even Kanye went downhill. Kanye's latest stuff is a big racket.

Perfectly sums up the duality of West; a rather laughable "profound" short
bob the moo16 February 2014
Kanye West is a rather divisive character – not just to the point where you either love him or hate him but even within one's else there are things you'll love about him as much as there are things to hate. For instance for me I really do like most of his music and think without doubt that he has real talent in this area and generally doesn't sit back on his laurels much. On the other side though, he can be a quite spectacular cock whether it be comparing himself to soldiers in terms of his service, storming the stage at an awards show and many other examples of a man with a massive ego and no reason to try to rein it in. I mention this because these two parts of him are very much on display in this short film which is at once good but also painful to watch.

The plot sees West directing himself in a story written by music director Hype Williams (that noise you hear is an alarm bell); his character Griffin is out driving through woods when a beautiful Phoenix falls from the sky in a ball of fire. He takes her into his awesome house and watches as she marvels at nature in the garden – chasing sheep and rabbits with wide eyes. He tries to make her welcome and loved but perhaps she is too different for his world? As an idea it already seems corny and indeed the delivery of it mostly is. The dialogue is howlingly bad, with the final speech about "your world" and having to burn being a real cringe throughout. In this sense it really feels like poetry that every teenager has written thinking it is profound – which it is to them, but terrible to everyone else.

Visually West does a good job aside from some poor coloring of skies etc in some scenes. His camera moves well and he is best when directing sections which feel like music videos and this is where the film is best – the music. I like most of these tracks and mostly they work well and the imagery works well with them – in particular the use of ballet dancers being a simple but effective scene. A shame that it tries to be more than this though, because it doesn't work in terms of being arty or meaningful and the harder it tries the harder it fails.

The performances outside of the music video bits are poor. West mostly stands looking profound except when he performs and he has no chemistry with Ebanks, mainly because he seems more intent on being "deep". Ebanks deserves some credit for bravely going with the film and doing what is asked of her; although the sight of her being "amazed" by a rabbit or a leaf is a hard sell for anyone far less a swimwear model. When she is asked to focus on image and the camera she does well, but all else she is poor and her dialogue stilted – a stunning woman for sure, but seeing her screaming at the sight of a cooked pheasant was funny and I don't think that was the goal. The script and story is the biggest problem though and Hype Williams shows us again that while he may be great at music videos, there is a reason why Belly was so awful and why he has yet to come back to make another attempt at a film.

Runaway has good music and West fans will enjoy it for that – hell, they may even be fans enough to go with the silly "profound" story and all the content with it. For me though it was laughably embarrassing with all the depth and profundity of recently dumped teenager writing poetry in their bedroom.

Brilliance captured on film
shadaimears8 October 2020
This film is pure genius. After watching this, I realized how complex of a person Kanye really is. The fact that he not only used his own music, but he also directed the film was unbelievable. He uses intense metaphoric language in the film and as a poet I found it rather exciting.

I have no clue what the hell is happening in this movie. I don't know if it's a concept or if Kanye got bored.
