A year ago, what were the odds that the top-grossing film out of Sundance 2024 would be one starring and executive produced by 93-year-old June Squibb?
Magnolia acquired Josh Margolin’s feature debut “Thelma” right at the end of the festival — one of a few acquisitions that closed during its run. Released in June, it’s grossed $9.1 million in the U.S./Canada. That makes it, for now, the top hit out of the 2024.
Why the “for now”? Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence,” a $5 million Neon acquisition also out of the Sundance 2024 Premiere section, debuts in wide release Friday. Although regarded as a niche title, it could pass $9 million.
“A Real Pain,” which Searchlight bought for worldwide release for $10 million out of the U.S. Dramatic section, stands at a $8.1 million domestic since its release November 1. Disney stopped reporting its grosses last weekend, suggesting it has topped out. (It has been available...

The State of the Race
If there is one part of the Golden Globes that is truly important to the acting races, it’s the show broadcasting a winner for some of the closest races. With the lead categories being split between Drama and Musical or Comedy, this year’s results impacted the Best Actor race on two levels.

Blueberry pie-scented candles (Heretic). Emotion-themed Sugarfina candy boxes (Inside Out 2). Shiz University sweatshirts (Wicked).
That’s just a (literal) taste of some of the swag (aka promotional items) that have been sent out to voters this season by savvy awards campaigners. Lavishly bound screenplays, one-of-a-kind posters, T-shirts and the like are de rigueur for any self-respecting FYC team, and this season did not disappoint.

Glen Powell’s starring role in Hit Man would be any actor’s dream. In the wildly entertaining new film from five-time Oscar-nominated writer-director Richard Linklater, Powell plays Gary Johnson, a tech-savvy philosophy professor who spends quiet nights at home with his cats when he’s not setting up wiretaps for the New Orleans Police Department. Through a series of unexpected, comedic events, he’s asked to pose as a killer for hire to help catch those looking to bump off their enemies. Gary, against all prevailing logic, excels at the job, inventing a host of personas. However, it’s Ron, the disarming, world-weary assassin who exudes confidence and cool, that sticks.
Powell went to great lengths to prepare for the role, which was inspired by a head-spinning real-life tale chronicled by journalist Skip Hollandsworth in the 2001 Texas Monthly article, “Hit Man.” “We got all of Skip’s research [including] Gary Johnson’s sting operations,...

It was at around 3 p.m. one Dry January afternoon in 2022 at West Hollywood’s famous-face-friendly San Vicente Bungalows that Glen Powell and Adria Arjona first met up to talk business over a couple of glasses of water. For 30 minutes they discussed Hit Man, a script that Powell had co-written with five-time Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater, based on Skip Hollandsworth’s Texas Monthly article about a professor pretending to be a killer-for-hire in order to entrap the money-for-murder set. If this professional date went well, the two would unite to star as Gary Johnson, the would-be hit man, and Madison, a woman who almost hires him to kill her husband. “This [casting] is fully [dependent] on chemistry,” Linklater had warned Arjona over Zoom before the meeting with Powell.

The buzz surrounding James Gunn’s new Dcu doesn’t seem to die down anytime soon. After revealing Jason Momoa’s casting as the antihero Lobo in the franchise, the filmmaker has now left fans guessing on the casting of Wonder Woman by following Momoa’s girlfriend, Adria Arjona.

Warning! Spoilers about Xo, Kitty season 2, episodes 6 and 8 ahead.
January 2025 is a treasure trove for returning Netflix TV shows, including the popular spinoff TV series of one of the streaming giant’s best rom-com movie trilogies of recent years. Netflix put romance stories front and center in the 2020s, whether those were set in an alternative historical period like Bridgerton, revolved around the festive season like Love at First Sight, or hilariously mixed romance and crime like Hit Man. The plethora of romantic comedies wouldn’t have been possible without the chart-topping teen rom-com contributing to the genre revival in the late 2010s, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before.

Rotten Tomatoes has now awarded a movie that was shut out at the Golden Globes ceremony. The review aggregator web site has presented their Golden Tomato Awards to the best-reviewed titles of the year annually for the past quarter-century. Previous picks for their biggest prize, Best Movie, have included 2023's Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer, 2022's Top Gun: Maverick, 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, 2020's Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and 2019's Avengers: Endgame, representing an eclectic mix of big-budget blockbusters and well-regarded arthouse cinema.
In 2025, Rotten Tomatoes is presenting the 26th annual Golden Tomato Awards, honoring the best movies and television shows of 2024. This comes relatively early in the 2024-2025 awards season, sandwiched between the Golden Globes ceremony on January 5 and the 2025 Oscar nominations, which will be announced on January 19 after a two-day delay amid the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires.

The State of the Race
After the majority of nominations for precursors have been announced, the frontrunner for the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar happens to be one of the scripts that was ineligible for a WGA Award nomination.
Though people are still hesitant to say “Conclave” will win Best Picture, the consensus after the film’s Best Screenplay win at the Golden Globes (and Peter Straughan’s speech), is that his adaptation of the 2016 Robert Harris novel is the contender to beat.

It has been a while since we’ve seen Wonder Woman in theatres, and it is such a shame that we never got to see the planned third installment with Gal Gadot in the lead. With James Gunn’s revamped franchise, DC Universe will introduce a new future for the character, and that goes with the fact that we are getting a new star for the role.

After a couple of postponements in consideration of the ongoing wildfires in California, the Writers Guild of America announced on Wednesday the nominations for the 2025 WGA Awards honoring film, TV, and several other mediums.
As always, the guild’s film nominations come with the caveat that any script not written by a guild member or under a WGA collective bargaining agreement was deemed ineligible, so major screenplay Oscar contenders like “The Brutalist” and “The Substance” were left out. What was nominated in their stead is the real indicator of some titles that are still not out of the awards race just yet.

Anora, A Complete Unknown, Challengers, Hit Man, and Wicked are among the 2025 Writers Guild of America Awards nominees.
In Best Original Screenplay, Anora and Challengers are up against A Real Pain, Civil War, and My Old Ass. The Best Adapted Screenplay lineup features A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man, Nickel Boys, and Wicked.
The nominations were announced Wednesday, a week after the guild postponed its scheduled Jan. 9 announcement due to the Los Angeles wildfires.
As previously reported, dozens of scripts — including several top Oscar hopefuls — were ineligible for consideration this year. A screenplay is ineligible if it’s produced outside of the WGA’s collective bargaining agreement or written by a non-union member.
The ineligible adapted scripts were Golden Globe champ Conclave (by Peter Straughan), Emilia Pérez (by Jacques Audiard), I’m Still Here (by Walter Salles), Inside Out 2 (by Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein with a...

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has unveiled its nominees for the 2025 WGA Awards, highlighting a mix of familiar Oscar frontrunners, unexpected entries, and the creative reshuffling prompted by ineligible contenders.
Sean Baker’s critically acclaimed “Anora” is leading the original screenplay list, which many consider the Oscar frontrunner in this category. Another strong contender is Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” a personal, semi-autobiographical drama that has been a critical favorite this season.
The inclusion of Justin Kuritzkes’ “Challengers” — a romantic sports drama starring Zendaya — is significant. After its high-profile shutout at the BAFTA Awards, this nomination could rejuvenate its awards season momentum. Adding variety to the category is Alex Garland’s bold post-apocalyptic thriller, “Civil War,” and Megan Park’s sweet yet irreverent comedy, “My Old Ass.” Park, who won praise for her directorial debut “The Fallout,” is also a DGA nominee for first-time director.

Is Steven Soderbergh preparing to join the “Star Wars” universe? Or is he just a huge fan of George Lucas and Tony Gilroy?
The filmmaker behind classics like “Ocean’s 11” and “Traffic,” as well as the upcoming supernatural horror “Presence,” released his 2024 watch list last week, as he has done for many years now, sharing it via his “Soderblog” under “Seen, Read 2024.” Included on the list are a range of films, television shows, and shorts, as well as novels, short stories, and plays, but of particular note are his multiple viewings of “Star Wars” films across the year, seemingly sparked by his watching the Disney+ “Rogue One” spin-off series “Andor” from Tony Gilroy. Soderbergh and Gilroy are longtime friends and collaborators, the former having helped finance the latter’s “Michael Clayton.” They also did a commentary track together for Carol Reed’s “The Third Man” that’s really worth a listen.

This video featuring his 25 Best Films of 2024 is inspired by David Ehrlich's usual Top 25 Countdown (which will be out next week) and follows the same kind of editing. Bjarnar counts down his favorites from 2024, featuring tons of our own favorites as well. I'm so glad to see Furiosa, Hit Man, Bird, The Room Next Door, Close Your Eyes, and Challengers showing up on best of the year lists. These are some of the best of last year along with all the usual: Nickel Boys, Anora, The Brutalist, No Other Land, and Dune: Part Two. We've also featured a few other great 2024 video countdowns: Clementine's 2024 in Film,...

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ mother, Janice, would often throw wild parties at the future music mogul’s childhood home, where it wasn’t uncommon to walk into a room where adults were having sex, one of Combs’ longtime childhood friends claims in a new documentary.

Glen Powell is progressing in Hollywood thanks to a new first-look film deal from Universal Pictures. This deal comes after Powell’s big year, which was topped off by the success of Universal’s “Twisters.” Along with this deal, Dan Cohen, a seasoned professional in the field, has become a partner in Powell’s production company, Barnstorm.
Cohen has worked for Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment for almost 15 years. He has been an executive producer on several popular projects, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, the Oscar-winning movie Arrival, and many more. People in the business see his hiring at Barnstorm as a big chance.
“Barnstorm has been a dream of mine since I was a kid,” he said. He said he wanted the company to become a center for great theater fun. He said good things about Universal’s management of “Twisters,” which made $267.7 million in the U.S.

Glen Powell, the actor who had a breakout Hollywood year in 2024, is continuing his hot streak into the new year.
The actor and his production banner Barnstorm have signed a first-look film deal with Universal Pictures, for whom the actor starred in last year’s surprise hit Twisters.
The deal comes on the heels of Powell finding the executive tasked with running his banner. Dan Cohen, who was a principal at Shawn Levy’s prolific production company 21 Laps, will help run Barnstorm as Powell’s partner. The new position, one of the most-coveted jobs in town, was filled over the holiday break.
“Barnstorm has been a dream of mine since I was a kid,” said Powell in a statement announcing the first-look deal. “I want our company to be a destination for world class theatrical entertainment. Throughout the process of making Twisters, I was so impressed with the leadership of...

Universal Pictures is entering a first-look film production pact with its Twisters star Glen Powell and his Barnstorm production company. At the same time, 21 Laps veteran Dan Cohen is set to join Barnstorm as the label’s partner.
The news comes in the wake of Powell being nominated for his first Golden Globe, for Best Actor in a Comedy and Musical for Netflix’s Hit Man, which he produced and co-wrote.
Twisters overperformed against industry expectations, becoming the biggest opening for a natural disaster film ever at the domestic box office with an $81.2 million domestic start, a $267.7M stateside final and near a $371M global take. The sequel debuted on Peacock in November, becoming the service’s biggest Pay 1 film ever in its first 14 days on the platform.

Nikki Glaser absolutely killed it with her brilliant jokes while hosting the Golden Globes awards this year. Glaser made sure that none of the major stars present at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the event were safe from her roast. During her roast, she took a funny jab at Glen Powell, who ascended to the status of a Hollywood heartthrob over the past couple of years.

Glaser came ready for the event with a slightly controversial Diddy joke. However, it wasn’t the only dark current events joke she had prepared. She shared that during her Glen Powell bit, she came up with another joke involving Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Nikki Glaser has been widely praised for her turn as host of the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday night, during which she roasted the celebrities in attendance without crossing the line. During a morning-after appearance on The Howard Stern Show, our 2024 Comedian of the Year revealed some of the jokes that were left on the cutting room floor.
Ranging from a second Diddy joke to a Hitler mention to a dig at Alec Baldwin, Glaser shared the pitches for jokes that she knew she couldn’t say on CBS and so they were earmarked for the “Stern file.”

The reviews are in: Nikki Glaser crushed it last night as host of the Golden Globes. She did so well in fact that producers are already trying to sign her up for next year. “We absolutely had a great experience with her, and think that she would be great at this in the long term,” executive producer Glenn Weiss told Variety.
Glaser’s monologue struck a perfect balance between edgy and not-too-mean — but she did have some harsher burns up her sleeve. On Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio show this morning, per Variety, Glaser told Stern that she had some meaner punchlines prepared that she ultimately deemed too prickly for a primetime audience on CBS.
Here are some of the edgier jokes that didn’t make the cut…

Turns out some roasts are even too mean for roast-sensation Nikki Glaser. In a recent interview, Glaser revealed that there was one joke in particular that was too mean to perform during this year’s Golden Globes monologue in Beverly Hills, Calif. The joke Glasser decided not to tell was an Alex Baldwin Rust joke referencing the death of cinematographer Harlan Hutchins, reported by Variety: “Michael Keaton was so great in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. And Alec Baldwin sadly did not come back to play a ghost because he was too busy making them.” Glaser acknowledged that while the joke itself is good, it was “just too mean.” “Please know that I know that was not nice,” she said. Among other jokes that were cut from the evening’s programming involved Nicole Kidman and Luigi Mangione, the suspect charged with the shooting murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson: “Glen Powell is nominated tonight for Hit Man.

Nikki Glaser earned widespread acclaim for her hosting duties at the 2025 Golden Globes, where her monologue poked fun at Diddy, Ben Affleck and Timothée Chalamet’s mustache. But what about the jokes that didn’t make it to air? Glaser appeared on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM radio the morning after the awards ceremony (via US Weekly) to share some of the harsher punchlines she decided not to say on live television.
When it came to Diddy, the disgraced music mogul accused of rape and sex trafficking, Glaser had this joke cut from the monologue: “This is the last time all of you will be the same room together until the Diddy trial.” Why? “We had another Diddy mention that worked better… and you only get one Diddy mention. You’re also accusing the people in the room of being involved in that, and they might turn on you.”

Hosting an awards show can be a thankless gig. Yet critics agree Nikki Glaser crushed her first time hosting the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday night.
The comedian deftly walked the line between mocking and celebrating the entertainment industry and overall seemed genuinely happy to be on the Beverly Hilton stage. Yet Glaser, who’s rather perfectionistic about her craft, has some next-day gripes about her own performance and is now revealing some of the harsh jokes she cut from her monologue — which range from quips about Alec Baldwin to Nicole Kidman to a Hitler reference.
Talking to Howard Stern for his SiriusXM show on Monday morning, Glaser performed several jokes that would have almost certainly gone over well with most audiences, if not some of the people in the room.
“This is the last time all of you will be the same room together until the Diddy trial,” was one of the jokes.

Nikki Glaser hosted the 2025 Golden Globes and has been praised for her opening monologue that took a soft approach to her often savage roast jokes.
Glaser seemingly restrained herself from going too hard on the Hollywood celebrities in the ballroom on Sunday night and left some jokes on the cutting room floor.
The standup comedian went on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show on Monday, January 6, and read jokes from the “Stern file,” or jokes that she cut from the main broadcast.
“The Golden Globes is the only show where you can see the biggest stars and movies and television joined together with the same goal — getting out of here tonight before Dax Shepard asked them to do his podcast,” Glaser read. “This is the last time all of you will be in the same room together until the Diddy trial.”

Sebastian Stan has won his first Golden Globe, taking home the trophy for best actor in a musical or comedy for “A Different Man.”
In his speech, Stan implored viewers to account for social prejudices toward individuals with disabilities. In director Aaron Schimberg’s “A Different Man,” Stan plays Edward, an aspiring actor with neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition that causes tumors to grow on the skin and bone. He stars in the film alongside a standout Adam Pearson, who has neurofibromatosis in real life.
“Aaron Schimberg and Adam Pearson at home, I wish you were here. I share this with you. Thank you for your trust,” Stan began in his acceptance speech. “Our ignorance and discomfort around disability and disfigurement has to end now. We have to normalize it and continue to expose ourselves [and our children] to it. Encourage acceptance. One way we can do that is by continuing to champion stories that are inclusive.

Nikki Glaser has been warning us that she wouldn’t go full-on roast mode as host of the Golden Globes, but don’t worry, her knives were plenty sharp as she carved up the entertainment industry Sunday night. Unlike last year’s show, when Jo Koy drowned in his own flop sweat, Glaser found her confidence early on, buoyed by an audience of stars eager to laugh at themselves (within reason).
Here are 10 of Glaser's smartest punchlines from her opening monologue…
1 Casting Call
“I’ve gotta say this feels like I finally made it. I’m in a room full of producers at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and this time, all of my clothes are on. So that was worth it.”
2 Affleck-tions
“Wicked. Queer. Nightbitch. These are not just words Ben Affleck yells after he orgasms. These are some of the incredible movies nominated tonight. The Bear. The Penguin. Baby Reindeer.

Nikki Glaser came out swinging at the 2025 Golden Globes, opening her hosting debut with a monologue that poked fun at Diddy, “Dune: Part Two” and Timothée Chalamet in front of Hollywood’s A-list stars.
She began her monologue by calling the awards ceremony “Ozempic’s biggest night,” and told viewers on Paramount+, “You have six days left to cancel your free trial.”
“I’ve got to say, this feels like I finally made it. You know, I’m in a room full of producers at the Beverly Hilton hotel, and this time all of my clothes are on,” Glaser said to big laughs. “It was worth it.”
Running through some of the top nominees, Glaser said, “Tonight, we celebrate the best of film and hold space for television,” nodding to the viral “Wicked” press tour meme. “‘Wicked,’ ‘Queer,’ ‘Nightbitch’… these are not just words Ben Affleck yells after he orgasms,...

Miles Mitchell, who bears a striking resemblance to A Complete Unknown star Timothée Chalamet, and Maxwell Braunstein, the spitting image of Hit Man actor Glen Powell, both made waves by attending the prestigious ceremony — and they had quite the story to tell.

2024 may not have been a banner year for the box office like last year’s was thanks to Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” but it still had its standouts like Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical “Wicked.” And though the Golden Globe Awards weren’t quite ready to turn their red carpet green, the Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo-starring hit will be well-represented at this year’s ceremony, having earned four nominations, including in the category of Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy.
