The State of the Race
If there was any more proof needed that the Oscars have become more international, we have not only seen the second year in a row where more than one Best Picture nominee is in a language other than English, but also three nominees are Cannes 2024 winners.
The biggest surprise may be “I’m Still Here,” the Brazilian entry for Best International Feature, which also earned a Best Actress nomination for Fernanda Torres. A mix of her charming Golden Globes acceptance speech, and voters having more time to finally watch the Venice premiere,...

“No Challengers in original score… I feared days like this would come,” New York Times culture writer Kyle Buchanan lamented on social media after the Oscar nominations were announced. “I think the lack of an original score nomination for Challengers renders the entire Oscar nominations list invalid,” opined Hollywood Reporter commentator Daniel Feinberg. When it comes to the Academy Awards, Best Original Score isn’t usually a category rife with controversy, but this year’s lineup stoked outrage when Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross weren’t nominated for their pulse-pounding compositions from the provocative tennis drama.
So what happened?
Just weeks earlier, Reznor and Ross won the Golden Globe for their score, defeating four of the films that did get Oscar nominations: The Brutalist, Conclave, Emilia Pérez, and The Wild Robot. The fifth Oscar nominee, Wicked, missed the cut at the Globes.
The composing team is also Oscar-pedigreed. Reznor and Ross,...

After “Emilia Pérez” led the Oscar nominations with an impressive 13 nominations, it’s clear the film is being celebrated as a landmark moment for queer — and specifically trans — storytelling in cinema.
Against the backdrop of a politically charged presidential election that saw Donald Trump re-elected, reigniting fears for trans and nonbinary individuals, the overwhelming recognition of “Emilia Pérez” feels like a defiant cultural statement. However, it’s disappointing that Academy voters made little room for other LGBTQ+ films in its 23 categories. Complex and daring projects such as Jane Schoenbrun’s psychological thriller “I Saw the TV Glow” and Luca Guadagnino’s romantic drama “Queer” were wholly overlooked.
Daniel Craig, widely predicted to secure a best actor nomination for his role in “Queer,” was absent from the list of nominees. In the film, Craig portrays an American living in 1950s Mexico City who falls in love with a U.S. sailor.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is making arrangements for all nominees of this year’s 97th Academy Awards to gather for the traditional Oscar class photo.
The annual photo, which celebrates the achievements of the year’s nominees across 23 categories, typically takes place during the Oscar Nominees Luncheon. However, this year’s luncheon was canceled due to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires. The luncheon traditionally includes nominees being individually announced, receiving nomination certificates and posing for the iconic group photo on stage.
To ensure this year’s nominees receive proper recognition for their achievements, the Academy is planning a special gathering at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles during the week leading up to the Oscars ceremony on March 2, Variety has exclusively learned. Alongside the planned group photo session, nominees will also attend a series of smaller, intimate dinners. These category-specific gatherings, which have...

Jimmy Fallon joked that actor Sebastian Stan has gone full-blown method after starring as President Donald Trump in “The Apprentice” by telling people he has already won the Oscar for his performance.
“Sebastian Stan was nominated for Best Actor for his performance Donald Trump. You can tell Sebastian is still in character because he is already claiming he won,” Fallon said during his “Tonight Show” monologue Thursday night. The gag made light of Trump previously falsely declaring he’d won the 2020 Presidential Election against former President Joe Biden.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released this year’s list of Oscar nominees on Thursday, and Fallon made sure to take aim at some of the heavy hitters making headlines. First up: “Wicked.”

When the 2025 Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday, awards-watchers expected to see the titles “Emilia Pérez,” “Conclave” and “Wicked” in the lineup. But the gripping, humane Brazilian drama “I’m Still Here” was a surprise inclusion on the Best Picture list.
Pundits had expected the film to show up in the Best International Feature and potentially Best Actress (Fernanda Torres) categories, both of which it did, but the Academy members – 9,905 voters at last count – also supported the film across all branches to score a coveted Best Picture nomination.
“The Academy members have always gravitated to high quality work,” Michael Barker, co-president of the film’s distributor Sony Pictures Classics, told TheWrap. “Obviously, we knew that this film was high-quality and we knew that if we got enough Academy members to see it, we were going to have a shot.”
He added, “That strategy started a long time ago, and (fellow co-president...

One month ahead of this year’s ceremony, France’s Cesar Academy has promised not to “spotlight” anyone accused of sexual or physical violence while issuing regulatory changes to curtail the voting rights of any Academy member facing legal accusations of that nature.
If a member is ultimately convicted, they will be expelled from the Academy for the duration of their sentence.
“In the event of legal proceedings against a member for acts of violence, particularly of a sexist or sexual nature,” the Academy announced, “the board will suspend the member’s voting rights until the ongoing procedure is concluded, or exclude them entirely until the full completion of the sentence, in the case of a final conviction.”
The Cesar Academy adopted a new charter on Jan. 23, promising to “fight against all forms of violence” while instating these zero-tolerance regulations for all legal accusations of sexual assaut. This rule change...

The 2025 Oscar nominations are finally here, and this year’s Best Picture nominees form an eclectic group of titles. That’s fitting for a year that offered as many diverse surprises and delights at the theater and on streaming as 2024 did. 2025’s Best Picture nominees are also noteworthy because none of them are shorter than 2 hours long. That means that, regardless of whether you still need to check off all of this year’s nominees or just a few, you’ll have to invest quite a bit of time if you want to watch all of them before the Oscars airs on Sunday, March 2.
To help you prepare for your Oscar viewing needs, here’s exactly how long every Best Picture nominee is this year, listed from shortest to longest.

The 2025 Academy Awards race is certainly one of the most contentious and unpredictable in recent memory. While in previous years a frontrunner like “Oppenheimer” or “Everything Everywhere All At Once” announced itself as the clear favorite early on in the award cycle, there is no indication as to what will pull ahead before the ceremony in March. While occasionally there is a firm horse race between two films, such as “The Power of the Dog” and “Coda,” or “Green Book” and “Roma,” there are multiple films this cycle that could end up taking home the top prize.
As with every year, the Academy Awards nominate a variety of films that reflect the state of the industry, some of which are better than others. There are also a great number of niche films that sadly were ignored by the Oscars entirely, such as “I Saw The TV Glow,” “Ghostlight,” “All We Imagine As Light,...

The polarizing albeit somehow industry favorite "Emilia Pérez" has nabbed 13 Oscar nominations, setting the record for most nominations by an international film. The Spanish-language French musical crime film, written and directed by Jacques Audiard, is also tied with "Gone With the Wind," "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," "Forrest Gump," and "Oppenheimer" for the second-most Oscars nominations, ever. /Film's Jeremy Mathai called the film "a swing and a miss," and with a 32% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, he's certainly not alone in thinking the movie was a huge whiff.

As we wrap an epic day of coverage of the Oscar nominations, here are some final observations:
—It’s ironic that there will be no Best Song performances at this year’s 97th Academy Awards, because music-driven movies have rarely, if ever, made such an impact. This is the first time that three music-oriented/musical films have been nominated for Best Picture in the same year: Emilia Pérez (with its chart-topping 13 nominations), Wicked (with its 10), and the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown (with eight). The last times that even two musicals faced off for Oscar’s biggest prize was in 1964 with My Fair Lady and Mary Poppins and in 1968 with winner Oliver! and Funny Girl.

The 2025 Oscar nominations are here. The Academy of Motional Picture Arts and Sciences announced the contenders for this year’s Oscars on Jan. 23. As usual, there were some snubs (no love for Angelina Jolie in Maria or Nicole Kidman in Babygirl) and a few surprises (Sebastian Stan’s Best Actor nod for playing Donald Trump in The Apprentice.) Musical drama Emilia Pérez led the field with 13 nominations, followed by Wicked and The Brutalist with 10 nods each, and Conclave and A Complete Unknown with eight.

The whiplash of the Oscar nominations rippled across Hollywood professionals, awards pundits, and elated enthusiasts of 2024’s best films and performances.
The most jaw-dropping — and welcomed — moment of nomination morning came from Walter Salles’ Brazilian drama, “I’m Still Here,” which landed three major nominations: international feature, best actress for Fernanda Torres, and best picture. This marks the second consecutive year in which more than one non-English language movie received a best picture nomination, following 2023’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest” (although it’s the first time two international feature nominees have been recognized). It shows that the Golden Globes (at least their winners) still matter.
After Torres won the Globe for best actress, triumphing over A-listers Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) and Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”), many Academy voters told Variety they were seeking out the film, with feedback being overwhelmingly positive. Torres’ steady appearances on late-night talk shows and her vocal,...

In my Oscar predictions piece on Wednesday, I warned about the possibility that this year’s list could be even more international than in recent years, partly because of the L.A. wildfires, which moved the Academy to extend the voting period twice and by nearly a week overall. It was indicative that voters in Los Angeles, where a lot of them live, might have been preoccupied. This said to me that the ever-growing international base of Oscar voters, not affected by the fires, might have more influence than ever on the nominations.
There is no question that happened.
Let’s start with Best Picture. Since Z in 1969, there have been 11 films simultaneously nominated for Best International Feature (formerly known as Best Foreign Language Film) and Best Picture. This year, for the first time, there are two: France’s Spanish-language Emilia Pérez and Brazil’s highly political I’m Still Here,...

“Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” emerged January 23 as the two Oscar craft juggernauts, scoring seven nominations apiece and setting up a battle of the musicals at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. This matches the seven craft nominations of last year’s eventual Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer.”
Jacques Audiard’s operatic thriller “Emilia Pérez” grabbed cinematography (Paul Guillaume), makeup and hairstyling, editing (Juliette Welfling), score (Clément Ducol and Camille), sound, and two original songs (“El Mal” by Clément Ducol and Camille and Audiard and “Mi Camino” by Camille and Ducol).
Jon M. Chu’s populist blockbuster “Wicked” captured costume design (Paul Tazewell), production design, makeup and hairstyling, editing (Myron Kerstein), sound, score (John Powell and Stephen Schwartz), and VFX.

The nominees for the 97th Academy Awards were announced today.
And as usual, the list contained some major surprises.
Some big names were snubbed, while other major talents received their very first nominations.
But the biggest shocker of all might have been the absolute dominance of Emilia Perez.

The French-produced Netflix film scored a whopping 13 nominations, making it tied for the second-most nods of all time.
(It’s a several-way tie that includes such cinematic heavy-hitters as Gone With the Wind, Forrest Gump, and Oppenheimer.)
The film also received more noms than any other 2024 film by a considerable margin.

The 2025 Oscar nominations have arrived, finally bringing some certainty to an Oscar race that has been unpredictable across the board.
After several delays due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, the Academy Award nods were read off by actor/comedian duo Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott live from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
As expected, films like “Emilia Pérez,” “Wicked,” “The Brutalist,” and “Conclave” are all leaders of the pack, but even though they have long been in the mix, the extra love for titles from “The Substance” to “I’m Still Here” are surprises that break away from how The Academy has traditionally voted for categories like Best Picture.

The 2025 Oscar nominations were revealed bright and early Thursday morning, with Spanish-language “Emilia Pérez” topping all nominees with 13, including Best Picture.
Karla Sofía Gascón, who plays the film’s title character, lands herself in the Oscar history books as the first out trans actress to receive a nomination. Coralie Fargeat is this year’s only woman to break into the male-dominated Best Director category, for her body-horror shocker “The Substance.”
Here are notable highlights from this year’s Oscar nominations.

Karla Sofía Gascón solidifies her place in Oscar history as the first out transgender woman to land an acting nomination. The “Emilia Pérez” star, who received a Best Actress nod, isn’t the first trans actor to be recognized by the Academy. The international trend begun by “Parasite” in 2020 continues. On Oscar nominations morning, Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” (Netflix) was expected to lead the nominations, and did not disappoint, with a record 13 chances to win an Oscar on March 2.

What's your favorite season? Why, Awards, of course! Yes, the time has come yet again for everyone to treat movies like sports. Who will win? Who will lose? We'll find out when the 97th Academy Awards are held on March 2, 2025! For now, though, we have the full list of Best Picture nominees to grapple with. As always, there are snubs and surprises, and I'm sure everyone has an opinion about what landed a nom and what got overlooked. Save for the summer movie season, the biggest time of the year is upon observers of the church that is cinema. Awards season is in full swing, with the Golden Globes already behind us. More to the point, it's Oscar season, with the full list of nominees for this year's Academy Awards recently announced. There were surprises and snubs, and now the race for Best Picture is on, with critical darlings and blockbusters alike competing for the night's top prize. But which one of this year's nominees stands above the rest so far as box office is concerned?
Box office is not a great way of determining quality. Plenty of great movies have made next to no money (see the much-beloved "Sing Street"), while quite a few not-so-great movies have taken in boatloads of cash (see 2016's Oscar-winning hit "Suicide Squad"). That said, box office is important in terms of...

Do me a favor. Grab your headphones, turn to your music app of choice, and press play on Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' score for "Challengers," Luca Guadagnino's 2024 film about sex, tennis, and power. I'll wait while you listen.
How freaking powerful does that score make you feel? I'll tell you this much: When I went to see "Challengers" at my local movie theater last spring on a random Thursday afternoon, I left the showing feeling like I could run a marathon or perhaps lift a car. That was partly due to the stunning lead performances by Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist as the most twisted tennis threesome of all time — as well as Guadagnino's cinematography, which he crafted alongside his director of photography Sayombhu Mukdeeprom — but quite a lot of the adrenaline I felt after seeing "Challengers" was thanks to its pounding, aggressive score. As expected, Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez (Netflix) landed a Best International Feature Film Oscar nomination today, one of a leading, and record-setting 13 overall for a film not in English. Other mentions for the audacious musical melodrama include Best Picture, Director, Actress and more.
With so many inclusions elsewhere, it’s possible that votes are split and Emilia Pérez does not convert to a win in the International race with folks opting to honor another deserving picture. But, if it does win, it would be the first time that a selection from France scores an Academy Award in the International category since Régis Wargnier’s Indochine in 1993.
The other titles in the International Oscar field doing crossover duty include Walter Salles’ lauded and so-called “comeback” movie, I’m Still Here from Brazil where it has done terrific box office for Sony. The movie also scored a Best Picture nomination as well...

The nominations are in for this year’s Oscars, but they’re reflective of an industry still stuck in its old ways. Some thoughts:
You either love or hate the awards season, but it’s hard to escape it. Awards of course don’t mean everything; they’re often indicative of a great marketing campaign and the production’s address book rather than actual quality.
Awards like the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs and the Oscars do however offer a reflection of the state of the entire industry. And today’s Oscar nominations didn’t paint a pleasant picture.
There are some excellent films nominated this year, such as Conclave, Sing Sing and Anora. We’re not here to criticise these films for getting nominated, but to highlight what they tell us about Hollywood itself. That being said, it seems I watched a different film called Emilia Pérez than the awards voters.

Netflix scored a leading 16 Oscar nominations on Thursday, most of which were awarded to “Emilia Pérez,” a genre-spanning musical drama about a drug kingpin who undergoes gender affirming surgery.
“Emilia Pérez” landed 13 nods in total, including best picture, best actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, best supporting actress for Zoe Saldaña, and best director for Jacques Audiard. We are fully in the throes of awards season with the Golden Globes behind us and, more importantly, the Academy Awards just around the corner. The 2025 Oscar nominations were announced recently and we now know which movies will be competing for the coveted Best Picture prize. That list includes several critical darlings such as "The Brutalist" and "Anora," and it also features a couple of surprises -- perhaps most notably Mubi's body horror flick "The Substance." But one of the nominees is not like the others, because it's by no means a critical favorite.

As of this writing, it holds a so-so 76% approval rating from critics on the site, with 237 reviews counted. More amazingly, it holds an abysmal 34% audience approval, suggesting that quite...

Best Picture With 13 nominations, “Emilia Perez” is the most nominated non-English-language film of all time, beating the record of 10 nominations held by “Roma” and “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.” “Emilia Pérez” and “I’m Still Here” are also the 18th and 19th films predominantly not in the English language to be nominated for Best Picture. Both are nominated for Best International Feature – the first time ever that two nominees from that category have also been nominated for Best Picture. At 3:35, “The Brutalist” is the sixth-longest Best Picture nominee, a few minutes longer than two recent Martin Scorsese movies, “The Irishman” (3:29) and “Killers of the Flower Moon” (3:26). “Cleopatra,” from 1963, is the all-time longest Best Picture nominee at 4:11. Acting categories Seven acting nominees are...

Who’s afraid of a little female body horror? For once, not the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which on Thursday morning, finally opened one of the last remaining gilded doors of their annual Oscar nominations, pouring love all over filmmaker Coralie Fargeat and her “The Substance.”
The filmmaker, with just her second film, earned the sole spot for a female filmmaker in the Best Director race, in addition to helming the lone female-directed film in the Best Picture race. Meanwhile, other female filmmakers and their work were shut out not just from the picture and director race, but the entire Oscar nom kit and kaboodle, including Payal Kapadia and her “All We Imagine as Light” and Halina Reijn and her “Babygirl.”
Earlier this month, Fargeat told IndieWire at the Golden Globes that she believes horror films are fully deserving of a level playing field at the Oscars.

The Academy Awards nominations were announced on Thursday, and while not a great variety of Netflix films made the list, one received a vast number of nods. It likely will not surprise you that the film is Emilia Pérez. It could be in a heated battle with two other music-related films for the Best Picture winner. Those would be A Complete Unknown and Wicked.
Netflix also made history as Karla Sofia Gascón became the first trans woman to be nominated for an Oscar. She was given a nod for her role in Emilia Pérez. In fact, all the acting nominations for Netflix were involved in the same movie. That is how good it is.

This year, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated one female director: Coralie Fargeat for The Substance.
The other nominees in the category are Sean Baker (Anora), James Mangold (A Complete Unknown), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez) and Brady Corbet (The Brutalist).
Payal Kapadia, who directed All We Imagine as Light, was omitted from the lineup on Thursday. Fargeat also received a best original screenplay nomination.
The Academy has long been criticized for its lack of female director nominees. Previously, the Academy had only nominated a woman nine times (eight women have been nominated. Jane Campion received a nod twice) in the best director category (Fargeat is the ninth female nominee), and only three have won. Lina Wertmüller, Sofia Coppola, Kathryn Bigelow, Greta Gerwig, Emerald Fennell, Chloé Zhao, Justine Triet and Campion are the only women nominated in the century-long history of the Academy Awards. Campion, Zhao and Bigelow won.

Karla Sofía Gascón made Oscar history Thursday as the first openly transgender actor to land an Academy Award nomination.
Gascón scored her first career nomination Thursday morning in the Best Actress category for her lead role in Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language operatic musical, “Emilia Pérez,” cementing her place in the Oscar history books.
The landmark Oscar nomination is groundbreaking for the transgender community as it marks the first time an out trans actor has broken through in a major acting category with the Academy.
Gascón isn’t the first trans actor to be recognized by the Academy, however. Elliot Page, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2008 for their leading role in “Juno,” came out as trans through an Instagram post in December 2020, 12 years after being nominated.
The Academy has also previously nominated trans filmmakers and musicians. Composer Angela Morley was the first openly transgender Oscar nominee in 1975 for co-writing...

Sundance is kicking off today in Park City, and fires are once again raging in LA County, but this morning the twice delayed nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were finally announced.
With a distinctly wide awake Wicked’s Bowen Yang and Bottoms Rachel Sennott unveiling the final contenders in all 23 categories early Thursday in a livestream from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, it was a glorious Oscars morning for Emilia Pérez, Conclave, Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, and The Brutalist.
“Rachel and I have been through extensive pronunciation training for all the names today,” SNL cast member Yang joked at the top with a swipe at mishaps of past nomination mornings.
On the other hand, for some whose names were not mentioned correctly or incorrectly this morning, they might now almost find themselves agreeing with Stephen King call last week for the Oscars to be cancelled.

“Emilia Pérez” scored 13 nods, tied with multiple other films such as “Gone with the Wind,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “Oppenheimer” for the second-most of all time. This is the most noms a non-English language feature has ever received.
“The Brutalist” and “Wicked” each scored 10 nominations, showing the extraordinary momentum they’ve built across awards season — “Wicked” has now grossed almost $466 million domestically. Both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande received acting nominations.
