Vera's former colleague Stuart Macken kills himself after his house is firebombed, leaving his daughter, Stella, in a coma. Vera learns that Stuart never recovered from his ex-wife, Marianne, leaving him for Brian Gower and had to be made subject of a restraining order. Given the two men's mutual antipathy, Gower is Vera's prime suspect but then there are others, people he recently arrested. One is Stella's former school teacher and another may have been her older lover. Indeed, Stella turns out to hold the key to everything. At the same time Vera's perceived bias toward Stuart leads to a run-in with constable Holly. Written by don @ minifie-1

second season opener
21 February 2014 | by blanche-2See all my reviews

In the first episode of the second season, Vera and Joe investigate an arson attack at the home of a police sergeant with whom Vera used to work. He was not home at the time; however, his teenage daughter was, and she is critically injured.

Vera goes to the hospital to see her old friend and colleague, and to her horror, she witnesses his suicide. Devastated, Vera soldiers on and she and her team hone in on who might be the killer. But they have to find him before he can be arrested.

This episode had more of a human touch to it. At the end of the previous season, Vera was having obvious heart trouble and Joe forced her to go to the doctor. Now she has been diagnosed as having angina. We get to meet Joe's wife. And again, Vera comes out with the unexpected quip. When asked by Joe if she was ever romantically involved with the late sergeant, she scoffs, "Use your eyes. Isn't it obvious that he was way out of his league?" Good episode with a neat twist.
