The story of the serial killers Fred and Rosemary West as told through the eyes of Janet Leach.
She was the novice appropriate adult asked by Gloucester police to sit through Fred West's interrogation due to his alleged illiteracy or simple mindedness. The first episode does not make that clear.
What is clear is the deviousness of Fred West (Dominic West.) A combination of manipulation, playing games with the police. It is almost bleak humour as he talks about cutting up his daughter that was killed. Closing her eyes before sawing her head off.
Dominic West reaches a nice balance making the viewer doubt if he was a roguish simpleton or charmingly evil. The production really made him look like Fred West, he recreated the accent though.
There is less focus on Rosemary West (Monica Dolan) as Leach contact was with Fred West. When we do see her, she is usually shouting and swearing. There is a scene as Leach enters Rosemary West's bedroom which is a boudoir as she worked as a prostitute. There is a hole in the wall; suggesting that Fred West peeped as she entertained her clients.
The effect on Leach is shown in this drama. Hounded by the press, it causes turmoil on her own family. Her husband who is on antidepressants thinks they will make money from the newspapers.
The first episode is really the police unaware of just how many bodies they will dig up. They were unsure if West was making things up to waste police time. The hints he made to Leach was just another example of his manipulative behaviour.
