The defining episode of season 3
athomed26 January 2013
It makes sense that an episode of Community where many of the laugh out loud moments are set up in one timeline and only reach their true payoff in another timeline is the episode which pops up throughout the rest of the season as a reference point for the study group.

This episode was about a lot of things. It certainly pushed the limits of what a twenty-two minute television show on NBC can do. It did something deeper with an exploration of the group dynamic within the study group. This episode delves into what place each character has in the group and where their strengths lie for the group as a whole. It does so in a supremely clever way, by subtlety removing a person from the group in seven separate timelines and allowing us to see how the group reacts without that person. The only difference from timeline to timeline is that a different person is removed in each timeline. There's your episode.

Brilliant writing. Fantastic concept. A solid 10 and a must-see episode of Community.

Mindblowing, hilarious, excellent - The defining episode of Community

Warning: Spoilers
*SPOILERS* ( I guess )

To me, this is the best episode of ANY TV show that I have ever seen. And that says a lot. From the humorous intro ( Room 303 ) to the moment the credits rolled; this episode was in every manner possible, just fantastic.

The idea that such an every day concept can be turned into something so touching, revealing and exciting should give the writers even more praise because writing this episode must have been an absolute nightmare.

This episode highlights what each person is about and what they bring to the group ( for example, Britta is the one who brings the group together and Jeff is the one that actually drives them apart. )

This episode has surely set the bar for future episodes of any series that I will be watching but I am already not quite sure whether I am going to see anything as near perfect as this.

Thank you, Community & Dan Harmon

The defining episode of the whole series

I can't get enough of Remedial Chaos Theory. It has to be one of the best, if not the GOAT episodes of Community. There's a genius to the script and the performances that makes you ponder the timelines amongst the Greendale Seven. The scene with Troy aghast with the pizza observing the mayhem engulfing the apartment is one for the GIFs for sure.

Greatest TV Episode of All Time!!!

Warning: Spoilers
How do I quite explain Remedial Chaos Theory? It's like Sliding Doors had a baby with Rashomon and was raised by Arrested Development. Like the title of the review says, Greatest TV Episode of All Time!!! Community knows how to make a hilarious episode, while still filling it with character development. The episode is important because it shows what role a certain characters as in the group, and why they are important to the group. This episode was nominated for an Emmy, but it lost to the Louie episode Pregnant(which was a great episode). It also was nominated for a Hugo Award. I suggest you watch Community and then watch this episode 20 times. Once again, Greatest TV Episode of All Time!!!

Community is pretty much always a great show, but occasionally there's an episode like this that reaches a totally unexpected, genre smashing, almost zen like level. Just watch it. Unless, you're in the darkest timeline.

That's my first review ever here and I am impressed no one did one on this episode. What can I say? It was just fantastic! Very clever one.The group gets invited by Abed and Troy in their new apartment and everything seems quite normal until someone has to go get the pizzas.Jeff decides to let luck decide and Abed creates in his mind different stories/timelines, one of each has a different character go for the pizzas and we see what happens to the rest of the group while he/she goes down. Each timeline is unique but Troy's is just AWESOME.And the darkest of course. At the end we are given to believe that this was what really happened but luckily it was all Abed's imagination! :D So I rate this with 10/10 and if I could I would rate it even higher! Go community!!!

What a genre..!! Thriller, Suspense & Comedy.

What an episode! Mindblowing! The 20 minutes of this episode gives a tough competition to even the best sci-fi movies. This episode not only kept me involved till the end, but also making me laugh a lot. Probably one among the best episodes of this show, or of any show for that matter. Glad that this show isn't degrading after extremely positive reviews of the first 2 seasons. The show just keeps getting better and better. The writing certainly hasn't dried up and even the acting is spot-on! Troy & Abed FTW !

Comedy wise - As usual what you expect from a Community episode. Plot and entertainment wise - AMAZING !!!

Rating - 10/10 !

I'm so happy I'm living in the timeline where this episode exists. This is one of the most inventive, creative and fun episodes of television out there and I'm not talking about comedies only. Remedial Chaos Theory takes a classic sci-fi theme, the multiverse, and transforms it into an original piece of comedy. The great thing about this is that it's an episode that not only plays as a concept one but also makes us understand more about the group dynamics and their personalities and it does that by repeating the same 2 minutes in alternate realities. Taking out one person of the group can make things a lot different and can make us see the impact that everyone has on it, for better or worse. I loved how "the darkest timeline" is the one where Troy isn't there, not only is a good play on the fact that this may all be in Abed's mind but it also show how important he is to the group. I also loved the fact that they used Roxanne to mark the beginning of each timeline, it's a great homage (I think) to Groundhog Day. Nice job Community!

Best. Community. Episode. Ever. Absolutely brilliant. Extremely dark while still hilarious. All of the characters are used well in this episode. All of the characters have story lines together that work so well. It's just brilliant go watch it and you'll know why.

Top 3 Television Episodes of All-Time
walkerj-3241211 February 2021
This truly is something special. Start to finish an action packed blast that nevers ceases to be endearing OR funny and shows the show can do more than the cleverest homages ever made and can make original high concept episodes that aren't just as good as the homages, but better.

The PERFECT episode of Community
danieldraper_29 October 2022
This episode is the reason why Community is one of the most innovative and genius sitcoms of our time.

This show isn't perfect; some characters aren't washed out enough, the way the show progresses is very unorthodox, and at times, certain plot points don't hit hard enough - but this episode hones in on everything that Dan Harmon intended to create. It was witty, funny, smart, sad, complicated, amusing and above all, fabulous!

Chris McKenna and Jeff Melman wrote and directed the hell out of this episode; the way the episode reaches its climax is quite sad, and I think showcases what one of the main characters needs to do to provide change and longevity to the group. With that being said, it was just marvellous! The concept of it, all the different timelines, and the jokes just kept coming and coming, and made me belly laugh multiple times.

Jeff, Troy, Abed, Pierce, Britta, Shirley, Annie, thank you for giving us all sublime performances and thank you to the cast and crew for creating this wonderful show, and genius episode.

Magnum Opus of Dan Harmon
praveenbhagwat28 May 2022
The endlessly re-watchable "Remedial Chaos Theory" has to be one of the greatest episodes in television history, and in my humble opinion the finest 22 minutes of American television in the comedy genre. Character based storytelling in different timelines with immaculate comedic punch only gets better. I saw this episode four times and noticed new details every single time which (an avid community viewer would argue) is shared throughout the series, but this episode does it best. A rare solid 10/10 from me for this brilliancy.

Throw this case out of court. It's dumb. That is all.

Warning: Spoilers
Remedial Chaos Theory is the greatest Community episode. It represents the show at its creative and narrative peak, with a denouement that could potentially serve as the endpoint for a series that began with a fraud lawyer enrolling at a wacky community college. If Modern Warfare ushered in an era where Greendale became Dan Harmon's conceptual playground to experiment in, and season 2 pushed these silly sitcom boundaries to new heights, then 304 ("No, 303. I wrote it down twice.") is the apex of every narrative thread and arc that began with a fake study group formed under the guise of getting with the "hot blonde from Spanish class".

In the background, the group's dynamics had been gradually evolving from Pierce's brief spell as the show's villain, culminating in an explosive, paint-splattered, two-part finale that had the black sheep of the group finally admit that he had outgrown their friendship. It was a sobering, introspective moment that was disappointingly rendered obsolete when Pierce casually strolled back into the frame come the season 3 premiere. But you can imagine and then observe how age and maturity play a complex role in how the group bounce off each other. Jeff takes a leadership role in the extended struggle with Pierce's manipulation throughout the second season, and these are excellent episodes that could excel even without their conceptual frameworks; after all, they're just sitting around in a hospital or playing an imaginary fantasy game at a table. His outbursts towards Pierce's attempts to ruin a feel-good game of Dungeons & Dragons or at being emotionally dragged through the slender hope of reconciling with his father are justified yet thinly-veiled cover-ups of his own insecurities and hypocrisies ("I don't like being excluded, Jeff. Do you? YES!"), and they also function as examinations of what happens when one of the group go rogue or missing. In Remedial's timeline number 3, Pierce is chosen to get the pizza, and so Jeff defaults to being the oldest male, and lashes out at Troy's youth as a way of compensating. The entire premise of the episode itself is a classic Winger gambit, the same manipulative con that he accuses Pierce of daily.

Pierce's redemption occurs when he realises that Troy has found his own happiness independent of his wealth (a common guilt-tripping tactic of his), but Troy's own growth comes as a broader step forward for his character. His own timeline may result in the most elaborate punchline of them all (the slow zoom into the troll's face gets me every time), but it also speaks to his increasing importance in the group's dynamic: without his lovable goofiness, they descend into chaos. Moving into his own apartment signals a step towards maturity that threatens Jeff's authority, hence all the snide shots towards his and Abed's hijinks. We had already witnessed Troy's coming of age in Mixology Certification, one of the most understated pieces of character work in Harmon's oeuvre. In that episode, his transition into adulthood comes not at the stroke of midnight, but when he assumes the role of parent after the study group's mum and dad end up in a drunken squabble. Discovering that the pair have been arguing over the same bar all night, Troy realises that two of his main role models are faking it as much as the rest of us.

Remedial gets the Britta of it all right: a headstrong activist who isn't nearly as smart as she wants to be, but is a lot kinder than she will give herself credit for (see the resolution of her internal moral crisis in Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking). I've been pretty critical of the show's treatment of her in the past, in her slow descent into a running punchline, and in how her arcs are mostly inconsequential in the later seasons until they just...end. Being so defiant in her self-reliance that she would rather ostracise herself from her parents than receive their charity sounds exactly like a Britta move, but why would that lead to her mooching off her friends? Here, she is the right mixture of goofiness ("Pizza Pizza, in my tummy!") and wisdom, bonding with Troy by pointing out the value of his own brand of masculinity. It's a compliment she wouldn't afford herself, which makes it all the more meaningful.

Abed's Winger speech at the close reminds us of what each character brings to the group, and how their pizza trip shows us what life would be like without them. Annie's the most driven and the one who takes her responsibilities seriously, and so she fetches the pizza without a hitch, and none of the chaos ensues. Shirley's storyline at best emphasises her caring nature, although it nevertheless begins a trend of Harmon winking at her lack of development without ever taking steps to actually address it (baking is her identity, and later on her two kids). Abed himself is the metaphorical glue that holds them all together; without him, old tensions re-surface, characters are mismatched (the kiss being delivered to shippers in the worst way possible), and it all goes wrong like a bad sitcom crossover.

It all returns to Jeff, to that hotshot lawyer who arrived at Greendale hoping for an easy pass and a fast-track back to his old life. Britta's carefree attempts at belting out Roxanne speak to how comfortable she in the group, so why isn't Jeff? I distinctly remember picking up on the fact that Jeff had slyly excluded himself from picking up the pizza the first time I watched the episode, and had hoped it would pay off. It does, karmic style. The lingering shot of Jeff smiling at the goofballs in the living room dancing to The Police is the culmination of every set-up in the broad story circle that is Dan Harmon's Community; caring is a lethal disease around here, and he's finally caught it. He might not admit in that moment how much he cares about them, only spelling it out in the season finale, but he doesn't have to. We already know.

Best episode from Community
tkayne-2199628 May 2023
This episode perfectly encapsulates every characters personality and they way they interact. If one were to watch the show for the first time this episode would be the best one to start with. Even though there are many callbacks to previous episodes, you don't really need to have seen them to appreciate the meta-ness and the characters chemistry. This show was really innovative at the time, it opened me up to sitcoms not having to having a laugh track and one continuous shot from the fourth wall. I may be biased but this show is right up there with "curb your enthusiasm" and "its always sunny in philedphia".
