It's not just another haunted house next door. No, really.
Jay_Exiomo26 September 2011
Know what's scarier than figures lurking in the corner? The fact that your efforts to bring your family together become the very reasons they are slowly turning against you. While Sophon Sakdapisit doesn't do much to bring anything original to the haunted house yarn Ladda Land, he effectively ventures into each of his characters' psyche, turns them into real people with real concerns, and successfully fleshes out their fears — whether of this world or those of beyond.

The title refers to a middle class subdivision in Chiang Mai, where a well-meaning man played by Saharat Sangkapreecha moves with his family to work for a drug supplement company. He has another reason for wanting to stay there — his mother-in-law hasn't forgiven him for marrying her daughter (Piyathida Woramusik) and makes his life miserable by rubbing in his faults and failures as a father to his two children. He's especially estranged to his 14-year-old daughter (Apinya Sakuljaroensuk), who grew up spoiled by her grandma. But aside from that, everything's going well with the household — that is until a brutal murder occurs at a nearby house and scary things start happening.

It sounds standard but the narrative's arc from the near-perfect happiness of its characters and the world they inhabit to their slow and painful descent to paranoia and madness is near-perfectly smooth. Sakdapisit's skill in creating such trajectory is evident in how he begins the movie, with Sangkapreecha unpacking things and meticulously decorating the house, signifying his desire to start a new life for his family. It's a stark contrast to how it all ends, with bare and empty rooms except for a few objects thrown around, underpinning the tragic outcome despite the best intentions.

There's convincing performances from everyone involved, too. Sangkapricha plays it with such subtlety that even when his character acts like an idiot as required of horror films (Why not call the police first instead of venturing into a murder site alone?), he never comes off as annoying. Woramusik and Sakuljaroensuk's characters are also defined more than other horror movies care to carve out secondary roles.

As a horror film, Ladda Land teeters midway between the best to reach these shores and the worst of them. What's certain is that it works better when it focuses on the family rather than on the spooky things that go bump in the dark. It's wise enough to invest emotionally and ratchets up the tension so well that it even if it doesn't consistently bring in the scares, there's a constant feeling of anxiety.

Scream come true...
poe4265 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
LADDALAND is yet another example of why Asian fright films are so vastly superior to American "horror movies." In this one, things seen and unseen, as well as things heard and unheard, combine to create the kind of all-important mood that is most often missing from U.$. movies. Here, we have a heavy-handed head of household whose dysfunctional family lives in one of those gated communities where it's easy to become "walled-in." There's a cat-cam and the wandering ghost of a murdered maid and a chilling game of hide-and-seek with a kid who turns out to be dead. As mentioned, the mood is sustained throughout (this is one of the most riveting movies I've seen in a while) and the ending is at once poignant and shocking. If you're looking for a solid fright film that delivers on all levels, look no further.

Absurd horror
eleester29 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I don't get the high praises for this movie. It started off well, making viewers believe that the haunting is in a house few doors down the street from where the protagonist live with his family. Only that that was a distraction from something totally that did not make much sense. This particular house then was just left out of the story loop without any explanation as to what it was, and the focus was shifted to the house next door. The most absurd part of all this was when the protagonist went into the haunted house next door, already aware that it is being haunted, with a hand-gun. A hand-gun to fight off ghosts? WTH? Stupid seen it already premise. They tried something new, but things were mostly like a very badly done patchwork. Skip it!

Don't get the great reviews
misscath-0266822 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I really disliked this movie for the following reasons. Half the time I didn't know what was going on with the story. Started out fine, then fell apart. What was going on between the wife and her husband's boss? I didn't like the dynamic between the father and older daughter. Lastly, did not appreciate seeing a cat being jammed between a door. I can't stomach animal cruelty even if it was staged. This could have been much better.

Ladda Land: And it started so promisingly...
Platypuschow12 February 2019
I love Thailand, I like Thai food (Provided it's not too spicy) and I love Thai culture. Sadly I really don't seem to like the Thai movie industry. Being the big nerd that I am I looked into it and I've seen 13 Thai films and the highest they go is 5/10. Being even more of a nerd I can confirm the average rating is an astounding 3.0.

Ladda Land tells the story of a family who movies to essentially the Thailand equivalent of the suburbs. Before they know it odd occurrences begin to take place leading certain members of the family to believe that the village might be haunted.

From the start I was fairly interested, it was developing nicely enough for about the first half of the film but then it gradually deteriorates. It's not only that the plot begins to fall apart but the characters being severely and unforgivably unlikable. The husband especially thanks to one needless scene, the mother (Again one scene especially) and the stroppy teenage daughter. If I can't care about the characters then why should I care about what happens to them? It's simply bad writing.

I like some of the ideas presented here, I like the cover art, I like the ghost sfx and for the most part I liked the first half of the film. Sadly everything that happens after that point took everything I enjoyed beat it down and nailed it with a steel chair shot to the head repeatedly.

Shoulda, coulda, woulda been better.

The Good:

First half is interesting

Practical sfx are decent

The Bad:

Awful characters

Second half falls apart badly

Worth a watch...
rosecalifornia12 August 2020
If it's a weekend and a rainy night, this would be a good film to watch.

Now keep in mind it uses subtitles so you do need to watch and read.

And the first 5 minutes of the film is filled with so much family cheesiness that you could eat mac n cheese for weeks. But allow the story to build and you will be in for a surprise.

Cinematography is better than anything found in current films from USA. Acting is much better as well.

Pure modern horror story: The ghosts of Capitalism!
symbolman9 July 2013
And by pure horror a mean Thai horror - the master and king and ruler of them all horrors! This movie and/or story is for all you horror and suspense fans. It's also for all you drama fans and family love fans. And, last but not least: No electric special effects, no animations, only some masks.

The story is pretty simple. A mid-young (over thirty) husband and father of two moves the family from Bangkok to another city in a nice suburban area called Laddaland. The area is, of course, guarded and fenced - a typical artificial "safe" place.

He is the only employed member of their family with somehow steady job that allowed him this move in a first place (mortgage, wife not employed anymore).

One day, brutally mutilated body of a young girl is found in one of the houses in the neighborhood, and soon after that, strange things begin to happen and the story slowly begin to unravel. But, the more we go in to the scary minutes and hours of the movie, the more is the story overflown with personal grief, money problems, job loses, anger, personal depression, lack of acknowledgment and LOVE. We start to see that it's all just one horror story, here and now, and they are the only ones that can say NO to it.

And the less they resist the more they are drawn in to the world of depression, sadness and hate.

All the ghost that are scaring are just the modern alternative to Zombies:"The ghosts of Capitalism!" As I said, this is a movie that uses RAW power to remind us about the current situation in the world is already exactly like in this movie, except without ghosts. If you don't call beggars and homeless Ghosts....

I highly, highly recommend it!

PS

It's more Drama then Horror ;)

A decent into madness that I was happy to watch!!
lojitsu20 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A-Z Horror Movie of the Day..."Ladda Land" (NR - 2011 - Thai)

Genre: Paranormal/Psycho

My Score: 6.9

Cast=4 Acting=8 Plot=7 Ending=8 Story=8 Scare=4 Jump=5 F/X=7 Creep=9 Psycho=9

When a family moves an upscale housing development with beautiful homes, they discover life in their new neighborhood isn't so perfect when they encounter a series of terrifying, paranormal events that drives the family to the edge of insanity.

This movie is so deep that you might not get it the first time around. It plays like a regular ghost story, but there is a whole other aspect that really made it interesting. It's a bit of a slow burn...more dramatic than terrifying. But this Thai film is not one to pass up if you like any type of Asian horror. It's a decent to madness that I was happy to watch!!

Believe This! Won Best Picture.
gerryexdlr27 September 2018
This was award best picture, best actor & actress in 2012. I don't know if the awards are like our Oscars or not but hey, to each(country) his own. To me, run-of-the-mill horror flick with fast moving ghost images, some gore and blood, a spoiled teenage brat and the husband who got sucked into an 'amway-type' scheme for a employment. See this if you have nothing else planned. I saw it on n/f 9/25/2018.

It was worth the wait
Fortressofdoors26 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I put off watching this for 8 years. Why, I don't know. In my opinion, this was a well done film and it could have worked on many levels. If they had decided to leave the ghostly imagery out and gone strictly drama, that would have worked also. It had a gripping story that had me leaning toward wanting to see what was going to happen with the family, and caring less about the haunting, but the fact that you get them both also works. So there is more than one way to look at this movie. I felt that it would have been a bit better if they had shaved off the last nine minutes and just ended it with the family driving down the highway, headed back to Bangkok. The flashback scenes weren't necessary and would have given it a cold shocking ending similar to the ending of The Mist. The acting and the cinematography was well done and I was pretty satisfied with it overall. When people review movies and say, I don't get the good/bad reviews for this film, well, you're not supposed to. People have different opinions. You leave yours and move on, not wonder why everyone doesn't think the same way you do.

YOUR VILLAGE HAS GHOSTS
nogodnomasters24 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is a Thai film. Like a Bollywood production, Thai believes 2 hours is the proper length for a film, not 90 minutes. The characters are built and rather slowly. Thai films also like bright colors, this one goes a little easy.

Mr. T is our main character. He is carefully preparing a house in an upscale community for his family to move into. He works for Empire Supplements, a multilevel marketing company. He has had a few good months and believes his boss when he tells him about the company's bright future. He has a supporting wife, a 14 year old daughter who hated leaving Bangkok, and a younger son.

The story is not about the ghost, but about this particular family and how the ghost effects their life. The events are triggered when a young Burmese maid is found locked in a refrigerator with her face cut in half. We really know nothing about the ghost(s), their motive, why they are there, or how close is the nearest Indian burial. It is about the disruptive nature of the ghost on the family.

The special effects are light and consists of shadows, rapidly moving figures, and now you see it, now you don't type of stuff. It appears the women gossip as much in the Buddhist temple as American women do in church. They don't hire Mexican help, but Burmese.

The ending of the film, which was one I didn't see coming, doesn't give you any closure about the ghosts.

PARENTAL GUIDE: No F-bombs, sex, or nudity. The "S" word was used.

BEWARE: ANIMAL CRUELTY (even if it may be fake)
persian-belle27 August 2020
I am a fan of good horror. I do believe that like many say, there were many good messages here but in an attempt to include a lot (and jam-pack then into a horror film), the film loses it's transparency and purpose.

It comes off at first as a horror film. However the horror story remains with many plot holes and the deeper messages also become lost in the midst of the horror story.

Horror viewers may find it absurd and unsatisfying, while the deeper, meaning-oriented audience may find the film rushed and a little unclear.

However there were some horror scenes that I enjoyed. Too bad the mystery remained throughout.

PS There's a gut-wrenching scene which contains extreme animal cruelty. I wish I could unsee that

Tragic story, but more effort needed on the ghosts!
larrynuman12 January 2020
This movie could, and should have scored an 8. I haven't seen anything as gloomy in this in a long time. You really have an empathy for the characters & wish them nothing but a happy outcome. Do they get one? That would be a spoiler too far.

I mentioned earlier it should have scored an 8, the reason it didn't was because I felt more effort into making the ghosts look like, well ghosts! Most of the time they just look like actors that are acting ghostly, instead of using special effects to make them creepier.

This is a story of a new life with new prospects that go completely wrong. The acting is superb and the whole viscaral feeling of the movie is almost claustrophobic. It's a brilliant film that I would recommend to those that don't just look for blood, gore & cheap jump scares.

A Different Take on a Haunted House
sparklemeandu-0904716 October 2020
I really enjoyed how this movie progressed, from a happy family (with a surly 14 year old) to a family simply trying to live. The story was pretty realistic, despite the scary parts, showing a family that wanted to be together. Throw in the scary parts, and you have a great movie. 6.5/10

A little clumsy
killercharm28 February 2020
The Thai Get Out. Kind of. A little clumsy in the delivery of the spookiness. What could have been frightening becomes a little hackneyed because of lack of timing. The ghost reaches a hand out to touch a person over the span of a whole minute.

Quite Scary
pamnetcharussaeng14 April 2022
This is one of the more scarier horror movies i've seen. I've been meaning to watch it for a while and just got around to it. The special effects makeup was super tacky, but the jump scares were superb, made my heart flip a few times. The acting was okay i guess, it was believable. Pretty OK movie.

Thai Haunted village movie
johndixonacupuncture10 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS ALERT:

Well made Thai haunted horror house movie. A play on the usual story of a family relocating to a new home for a new life. What is great is that it starts off almost cheesily perfect - the families life is going to be perfect from hereon in. They are just asking for some bad things to happen. And it starts off idealistic, with a kind of Carpenters-esque type soundtrack.

But slowly the cracks start to appear. Things are not what they seem. A murder in a house close by shakes the village. Other occurrences happen. People move out of other houses.

What is good is that it is not just confined to their house. It is the whole neighbourhood. Gradually we see this descent into tension, paranoia and violence for everyone in the village. With a eery conclusion.

There are messages here. About over extending yourself to get the ideal house and life. Taking on the mortgage, with a job that is not as secure as originally thought. Being fair to family members and not manipulating them. Also learning that darkness comes first with anger.

We learn to hate his mother in law even though we never see her and in some ways blame her. Would he have moved there if not for her? Also the way she manipulated his own daughter against him. Poor chum never had a chance really. And all he wanted to do was make his families life better. Its almost a movie for MGTOW.

Some really unusual takes on horror. The scene where he brutally treats the cat is realistic and actually is quite significant in the movie as it is the turning point into the descent. I haven't seen that kind of scene in any horror movie before.

Other life challenges are dealt with. The husband loses his job and takes a low paid job. He does what he has to do to keep it all together. Of course, that turns out bad for him. But all he is just trying to do is his best.

What is never addressed - is why this village is haunted. In American movies, it used to be because a house was built on an old native American burial ground. But here we get no explanation. I assume there is some kind of holy place that this modern shiny complex is built on. It seems to be an area of misfortune. People seem to lose jobs there. Is it related?

Overall there is a message. Mothers in laws - don't be horrible to your sons in laws. Families, don't overextend yourself for the ideal house. And be prepared to walk away when you realise you live in a haunted village. Your family is more important.

It's good. Not bad. Not something that I would highly recommend either. It's just another horror movie of family move into a new home, ghost, haunted,.. Yup. That's all.

Good acting though.

Effective family drama with a 'pinch' of ghosts!
BladeRunner20203 December 2018
While I was expecting to watch a cheesy, jump scare driven asian ghost story, (which it was whenever the ghost appeared) I was pleasantly surprised to see an intense family drama. I mean this movie could have worked very well without all the spookiness. A story about a father's desperate attempts to do the best for is family.

I loved the pace of this film. The family's slow descent in to chaos, insanity and paranoia was well captured. The acting is top notch here especially from the actors playing father and the daughter. The tension between the relationship is what elevates this film. I also loved the direction and cinematography. I don't get why the director felt this has to be a ghost story.

The final minutes of the film will hit you hard and it was not because of any of those ghosts.

Story/Screenplay - 9/10 .

Ghost/spookyness - 4/10 .

Acting - 10/10 .

Cinematography - 9/10 .

Overall - 8/10

Beta character with absurd story
yorozuya-055181 June 2022
I hold my emotions to see the main character (Thee) of this film. Too stupid idiot character annoying in every scene. My Friend recommended this film because he said Laddaland is one of the best thai horror movies, but in my opinion this is the worst horror movie I have ever watched.
