Sex & Nudity

  • The movie has pervasive Freudian undertones but kids will likely not notice.
  • There is mention of a 'boyfriend generator' in a girl's mind where identical boyfriends come off an assembly line. Later the horde of boyfriends make a bridge of themselves in a slightly unsettling scene.
  • As a toddler, Riley runs around the house naked after a bath. Her butt is briefly shown. (Played for laughs)
  • In the end of the movie, a new console is installed for the emotions. Disgust discovers a button labeled "Puberty" on the console. She asks, "What is pooberty," incorrectly pronouncing it. (Played for laughs)
  • Riley has a nightmare in which she shows up to school not wearing pants, but only her bare legs are shown.

Violence & Gore

  • Anger ends up punching and choking Fear.
  • Anger ends up shoving Fear & Disgust (twice).
  • Fear is often on the receiving end of cartoon violence, often from Anger.
  • Characters are put into peril.


  • Anger says "May I say that curse word now"
  • 1 incomplete use of "son of a bitch". Towards the end of the movie (pronounced: "This new console is the son of a-!).
  • 2 uses of "what the heck", 1 use of "who the heck".

  • There is a recurring joke about the amount of swear words Anger knows but doesn't get to say. When he finally says one, it is bleeped out by Fear.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The clown might be scary to some younger viewers.
  • The basement stairs can frighten some.
  • The Haunted Mansion music plays in Riley's first nightmare. Played for laughs.
  • A giant clown is featured as one of Riley's greatest fears.
  • A dog is briefly seen apparently cut by half during a nightmare sequence; the head end then chases the tail end.
  • Riley's teeth fall out in a dream sequence and in another one a zombified rat appears in reference to a dead rat she finds in her house earlier.

  • The moms emotions fantasize over a "Brazilian helicopter pilot" that she could've chose over her current husband

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The last 15 minutes can be emotionally intense for many, mainly adults rather than children, as the film is about showing it is okay to be sad when life changes and people grow up.
  • Bing Bong dies by fading away. Very sad and powerful.
