A round-up on the practical effects Greg Nicotero and co. used to achieve memorable moments in The Walking Dead (incl. Carl's hair)…
Warning: contains spoilers for The Walking Dead seasons 1-6. And gory images. Ugh.
Hairdressers exist after the undead apocalypse. We know this to be the case in The Walking Dead not only because we met one—Rick’s ill-fated girlfriend Jessie—but because the majority of characters have been able to maintain some kind of post-global destruction ‘do. Carol has a pixie crop. Daryl sports a complicated homage to Link from Zelda, and you could happily roll marbles around on Abraham’s flat-top all the live-long day.
One character though, has thus far defied the scissors: Carl Grimes. And now, after the events of season 6B, we know why.
“There’s a reason why [Carl’s] hair’s so long,” VFX veteran and director Greg Nicotero said in this Kimberley Potts interview.

Everyone’s favourite zombie comic book based TV series is back and starts when we left off at season 4, with Rick and company locked inside a railcar. Before long they’re dragged out into a warehouse where two Terminus workers are butchering a body for meat, revealing the cannibalistic nature of the residents. As the workers begin executing the prisoners, Gareth, the leader, questions Rick about the bag he hid in the woods and threatens Bob until he gets what he wants. Soon after though, a huge explosion and some gunfire goes off, giving Rick the chance he needs to start his escape.
Meanwhile, Carol, Tyreese and Judith find a Terminus ally called Martin after hiding from some walkers.

*there are major spoilers here. Director: David Boyd. Writer: Robert Kirkman. Cast: Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs, Danai Gurira and Melissa McBride. Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his crew have survived Terminus. Now, this growing group have found another character to add to the pack. Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), a cowardly priest, has a refuge and a few secrets. Lots of sideplots were developed further in this showing. Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) has a trap in store for the survivors. A few cannibals have survived their defeat, at the hands of Carol (Melissa McBride). A kidnapper is about and Bob will never look the same. This episode was quite a bit slower than the previous episode, "No Sanctuary." As well, some of the night scenes obfuscated the visual frame. But, "Strangers" was still an exciting outing. Everything is going well for Rick and his current company. But then,...

It's been pretty clear over the past four seasons of "The Walking Dead" that the titular zombies are merely sideline characters in their own apocalypse, as the human stars of the show - and the crazy, high stakes drama that they manufacture - have been the main focus of the series since its inception. So it was a pleasant surprise to see a huge horde of the undead play such a key role in Sunday's fifth season premiere, as zombies overtook an explosion-rattled Terminus to finish the job that Carol (Melissa McBride) started.
Yes, we finally learn the truth about Terminus - yep, they're definitely cannibals - only to see the settlement destroyed by episode's end, as Rick (Andrew Lincoln) makes good on his vow at the close of season four to prove that their captors were "screwing with the wrong people." But it's Carol who sets that plot in motion,...

You know characters are going to kick the bucket on a show called "The Walking Dead" -- it's just a matter of which characters and when. The Powers That Be like to claim "no one is safe" on Twd, but please. Certain people are definitely safe. (Cough*Daryl*Cough) But certain people are definitely expendable, too. There are currently about 16 regular cast members going into Season 5, not even counting new guys like Gareth at Terminus and Father Gabriel Stokes, who made a brief appearance in the Comic-Con trailer. So we won't cry too hard if they pare it down to a dirty dozen or fewer. We all have our favorites -- and honestly we're not wishing death on any of these guys -- but some storylines are more crucial to the series than others. On that note, here's a character ranking, from most expendable to least.

Season Four of The Walking Dead ended with Rick and the group outgunned, outnumbered, and trapped in a train car awaiting a grim fate. Season Five picks up shortly thereafter. What follows is a story that weaves the true motives of the people of Terminus with the hopeful prospect of a cure in Washington, D.C., the fate of the group’s lost comrades, as well as new locales, new conflicts, and new obstacles in keeping the group together and staying alive. Stories will break apart and intersect. The characters will find love and hate. Peace and conflict. Contentment and terror. And, in the quest to find a permanent, safe place to call home, one question will haunt them… After all they’ve seen, all they’ve done, all they’ve sacrificed, lost, and held on to no matter what the cost...Who do they become? Given the surroundings, it's a safe bet Daryl is creeping up on one of the (alleged) cannibals in Terminus. Whoever it is on the other side of that plastic, I wouldn't trade places with 'em! Andrew Lincoln (Rick) has told us to expect the most "grown-up" season yet. “We’re really earning our rating this season,” he says. “There are families that watch it together, but just so it’s on the record, guys—it’s a grown-up show this season.” So does this mean they'll finally be able to say "f*ck"! The Walking Dead also stars Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Emily Kinney, Danai Gurira, and Chad Coleman, and returns to AMC on October 12th.

"The Walking Dead" continues its onslaught as one of the most amazing horror-themed television shows to ever hit the airwaves. Season 4 brought new characters, expanded some old favorites, evoked tears and cheers, and of course had its share of zombie action.
Tomorrow, August 26th, "The Walking Dead" Season 4 hit Blu-ray/DVD via Anchor Bay, and with that in mind we decided to look back at our favorite moments from this season. Characters coming and going, separation and reunion, death and new life... Season 4 brought us "The Walking Dead" like we'd never seen it before.
We've got our Top 13 here, but as always, we'll start with some honorable mentions. Bob's raging alcoholism leading to the complete destruction of the liquor store kicked off the action in Episode 1, and the discovery of David and Karen's murdered and burned bodies was the first real mysterious firecracker Season 4 gave us.

From the looks of this 3-minute long Comic Con trailer for “The Walking Dead” Season 5, it appears as if Rick and company’s ordeal at the hands of those nutcases at Terminus don’t actually last that long. Those guys are what, cannibals, right? Pretty soon everyone’s out and about with guns and whatnot. And did they team up with those weirdos? I’m so confused. Anyways, check out the Comic Con trailer below. The final shot of Rick with an assault rifle is just pure awesome sauce. No more planting crops for this ex-Sheriff’s Deputy! Andrew Lincoln returns to lead the cast, including Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs, Scott Wilson, Melissa McBride, David Morrissey, Emily Kinney, Danai Gurira, Chad Coleman and Sonequa Martin-Green. Season 5 premieres this October 12th.

Thursday was a big first day for live-blogging at San Diego Comic-Con. I live-blogged "Penny Dreadful," "Community," "Under the Dome" (ugh) and "24." Friday (July 25) started with "Big Bang Theory," which I'll write up later, but didn't live-blog. Now it's time for chaos, with live-blogs for "The Walking Dead," "Game of Thrones" and "Arrow," plus possibly "The Originals," depending on timing. Whee! Up first? The Hall H panel for "The Walking Dead," which is likely to be as big as any panel at Comic-Con, featuring stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Melissa McBride, Chad Coleman and Michael Cudlitz, showrunner Scott Gimple, franchise creator Robert Kirkman, long-running EPs Gale Anne Hurd and Dave Alpert, producer-director-makeup genius Greg Nicotero and moderator Chris Hardwick, who might as well be on the panel himself. Let's see what goes down! 12:25 p.m. We're running a bit late. But we'll be starting soon.

Having just experienced AMC’s Dead, White & Blue Weekend, fans of The Walking Dead are hungrier than ever for the fifth season to begin in October. Before that day arrives, however, fans can experience the intense fourth season in a whole new way this August when it hits Blu-ray and DVD. The home media release of Season 4 will see multiple formats, including a limited edition Blu-ray that comes with a key to the prison that Rick and company made their home in.
Slated for an August 26th release, The Walking Dead: The Complete Fourth Season Blu-ray is coming out in two limited edition formats: the Prison Key Blu-ray with a CD soundtrack and the Blu-ray that comes in a “Tree Walker” display case created by McFarlane Toys that depicts the walker stuck under a log and growing over with moss, slowly becoming a part of the tree it’s leaning on.

By now we all know Terminus wasn't exactly what Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and the gang had hoped it would be. Well, not everybody knows what's up yet. In this new The Walking Dead season five sneak peek, Carol (Melissa McBride) and Tyreese (Chad Coleman) are still on the road to Terminus with Rick's baby Judith. Things aren't looking so great for the trio as a wave of walkers sets upon them. Yikes. But little do they know, Terminus isn't sunshine and puppies. At the end of season four of The Walking Dead, Rick, Michonne (Danai Gurira), Carl (Chandler Riggs) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) made their way to Terminus, only to find its inhabitants wearing the possessions of the friends they haven't seen...

According to a couple of different reports from around the net, we have good reason to believe that Terminus is going to be in a whole heap of trouble with Rick and company when The Walking Dead season 5 returns for action this Fall. Chandler Riggs aka Carl was quite blunt with a fan when he or she asked him if terminus was in trouble, stating, "yes they are doomed." Also, there are some season 5 set pics that reportedly show explosions and charred bodies at the filming locations, speculating a possible torching by Rick and company, but nothing is officially confirmed yet. Recently, Andrew Lincoln aka Rick explained to Entertainment Weekly: "Oh, I don't care what Scott Gimple has written - we're improvising the first couple of episodes. We've already said that those Termites - we're just gonna kick their bu**s! Honestly, it is so good to be playing Rick again.

via AMC- “Q: How is the location scouting going? Can you tell us about any new locations for this season?
A: We’re out of the prison and we’re on the road; and we will see a little more of Terminus. The [survivors] don’t have a space to get back to, like the prison, so this year will be really brand new, which is exciting.

We’re not even close to The Walking Dead Season 5 premiere in October, but filming begins this month and we’ll have plenty of details trickling in over the coming months. Today, it has been revealed that another actor from The Wire has joined the Season 5 cast as a series regular.
According to Deadline, Seth Gilliam (pictured below) has officially joined the cast. Unfortunately, due to the way casting is handled, we don’t know much about who he’ll be playing. Like a number of other actors hired for roles on the show, they are being given fake names and potentially fake character descriptions. In this case, the character is named Michael Todd and is described as “having two sides, displaying a friendly, puckish humor but also having a haunted side stemming from a dark secret.”

After the way Season 4 finale ended, it’s going to be difficult for fans to hold out until the show resumes in October. The Walking Dead Season 4 concluded last night with an episode that brought a number of the survivors together, gave us a better look inside Terminus, and is sure to keep fans guessing what happens next from now until October. As the episode hasn’t aired internationally, I won’t be going into details yet, but we have 47 photos from Season 4′s final episode, including some behind-the-scenes photos you won’t want to miss.
“Following the devastating events of the mid-season finale, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and the group are still reeling from the loss of their home, family and friends. With the destruction of the prison, the group of survivors is broken apart and sent on divergent paths, unsure of everyone else’s fate. What was a challenging life behind fences and walls grows that much more perilous and precious as they are exposed to new dangers, new enemies and heartbreaking choices.

Director: Michelle MacLaren. Writers: Robert Kirkman. Cast: Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chandler Riggs and Danai Gurira. The finale of "The Walking Dead" was more of an introduction to Seas. 5, than an end to this season. Though, the episode did say one last good-bye to an important character, Herschel, through a series of flashbacks. Lots of conflict was introduced in this showing, titled "A." Rick had to fight his way to Terminus and all he found there were some cannibals. The use of cannibals in an apocalypse is a bit of a cliche; still, Rick and the other survivors will have to use their wits to get out of that cattle car. Overall, "A" was a well paced episode, involving lots of bloody violence. "A" was a Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and crew focused episode. Early scenes involved Rick showing Carl (Chandler Riggs) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) how to create a rabbit snare.
