Frightening & Intense Scenes

- Ludwig's nightmares and the degradation of his mental health are a recurring subject and may be upsetting. His strong sense of guilt (worsened by the sight of mass graves and the idea of war, as well as by his attraction to men, as an extremely pious Roman Catholic) sometimes bursts forth in destructive ways.
- Institutionalization is a strong theme and the eventual fate of several characters.
- At several points Ludwig is suicidal, asking for the means to kill himself or shown to contemplate throwing himself off of high points.

- Ludwig struggles violently with his asylum doctor, and drowns him before drowning himself.
