Sex & Nudity

  • Some nudity of swimmers and classical statues, more or less nonsexual.
  • Passionate kissing at one point, immediately curtailed.
  • At another point, a brief unreciprocated kiss that is responded to with alarm and hostility.
  • Brief discussion of Ludwig's homosexuality (whether or not it worsens the charges of insanity leveled against him; his doctor states that it does not and that same-sex attraction occurs in people other than the insane, others clearly believe it does.)
  • Passionate hand-clasping, embracing, and other physical romantic gestures.

Violence & Gore

  • At one point Ludwig hallucinates his brother's dead body with a bloodied face.
  • Ludwig is violent towards himself at several points, striking himself and biting at his hands.
  • At several points characters need to be restrained with force to keep from hurting themselves or others.
  • During a breakdown, Otto bashes himself against a wall and comes away with a bloody face that leaves Ludwig with blood on his hands.
  • A character is burned in a fire; his burns aren't graphic but they're shown fairly extensively.

Profanity

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Ludwig has a problem with sedatives and painkillers prescribed to him by doctors; at several points he is shown drinking from medicine bottles and having nightmarish dreams.
  • At one point a character drains a glass of champagne very quickly due to stress.
  • Some consumption of alcohol in a social/domestic context.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Ludwig's nightmares and the degradation of his mental health are a recurring subject and may be upsetting. His strong sense of guilt (worsened by the sight of mass graves and the idea of war, as well as by his attraction to men, as an extremely pious Roman Catholic) sometimes bursts forth in destructive ways.
  • Institutionalization is a strong theme and the eventual fate of several characters.
  • At several points Ludwig is suicidal, asking for the means to kill himself or shown to contemplate throwing himself off of high points.
