In this week’s edition of Canon Of Film, we take a look at one of Woody Allen‘s most popular films, ‘Crimes and Misdemeanors’. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
Crimes And Misdemeanors (1989)
Director/Screenwriter: Woody Allen
Part dark tragedy, part dark comedy, or is it all comedy? It’s certainly all dark to say the least. Considered by almost everybody as one of Woody Allen’s very best films (although I’m not sure Woody would agree), ‘Crimes and Misdemeanors’, wasn’t his first dramatic film, that was the Ingmar Bergman-esque ‘Interiors,’ and it certainly wasn’t his last comedy, yet it clearly represents the moment in Allen’s career when he started to abandon comedy in favor of drama and tragedy. Well, maybe “abandon,” is the wrong word, but he certainly began to lose interest in comedy around here.

The South Korean-American monster movie “Okja” storms Netflix come Summer of 2017. Just recently, the online streaming giant released the first stills for the film helmed by director Bong Joon-ho of “Memories of My Murder” (2003), “The Host” (2006) and “Snowpiercer” (2013) fame.
“Okja” chronicles the adventures of a South Korean girl, Mija, who must risk everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend—a shy but massive animal named Ojka. The film is penned by Joon-ho himself with writer Jon Ronson.
The film boasts a budget of $50 million and a stellar Hollywood cast that includes Tilda Swinton (Doctor Strange), Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler), Paul Dano (Love & Mercy), Lily Collins (Rules Don’t Apply), Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), and introducing Ahn Seo-hyun as Mija.
The first movie still shows the animal rights activist, Red, (played by Lily Collins) running around Wall Street in Manhattan.

ITV has announced a new six-part World War II drama series.
Created and written by Simon Block and given the working title Jambusters, the drama follows a group of inspirational women in a rural Cheshire community.
"We're really delighted to have commissioned Jambusters," said ITV director of drama Steve November.
"Great writing from Simon has given Julie Summers's wonderful book a fictional life. The women are real and engaging, and have fantastic spirit and attitude.
With World War II on the horizon, multiple strands of plot interweave to create a period drama full of jeopardy and intrigue, but also great humanity and modernity."
Executive producer Francis Hopkinson added: "Thanks to Simon Block's brilliant script, inspired by Julie Summers's book, this series will take a fresh look at life on the Home Front, showing both the tragedies and the triumphs, and offering some wonderful roles for Britain's top actresses.

But more on that in a minute. First, a quick recap... Also known as the "Honeytrap murder," the true story follows how then 16-year-old Shakilus Townsend was lured to his death by a girl he really liked (Samantha Joseph, also 16), and whom he apparently...
