The Merv Griffin Show
This episode is one of the most heated and controversial in the history of the Merv Griffin Show. Merv's guests are Mark Frechette and Daria Halprin stars of "Zabriskie Point", youth militant leader Abbie Hoffman, TV personality Virginia Graham and National Review editor Tony Dolan.
The show started off with Mark and Daria plugging the movie. Then for the second half Abbie Hoffman representing the Yippies and Tony Dolan from Young Americans for Freedom came on to debate the Vietnam War. Hoffman took off his jacket and since he was wearing a shirt made of an American flag the screen went blank and a disclaimer came on indicating that the producers felt it was improper to allow this display and whenever Hoffman appeared on camera it would be blank for the remainder of the show. After a while the co-host Virginia Graham made a comment that she thought it was awful that American boys were shirking their patriotic duty by going to Canada to avoid the draft. Mark chimed in that she was a stupid old biddy who might feel different if she were subject to the draft. At this point Tony Dolan stood up and got in Mark's face demanding he apologize for insulting Graham. Mark rose and decked Dolan with one punch. Griffin stumbled to the front of the stage saying that would conclude the show and announcing who the next shows guests would be.
