Jim Caviezel‘s acting career has spanned over three decades, and he’s worked with such filmmaking giants as Ang Lee, Tony Scott and Terrence Malick. A devout Catholic, Caviezel was profoundly moved during production of the 2004 hit “The Passion of the Christ” in which he portrayed Jesus and began changing his career focus to making inspirational films that more directly appeal to audiences of faith, such as “When the Game Stands Tall” and “Paul, Apostle of Christ.”
In his 2023 movie “Sound of Freedom,” Caviezel plays the real-life Tom Ballard, a Dhs special agent who goes rogue to rescue a young girl who has been kidnapped by a Colombia sex-trade ring. The film has been celebrated by politically conservative audiences, while critics were more mixed. Despite the controversy surrounding the film, “Sound of Freedom” became the unexpected box office hit of 2023, crossing the coveted $100 million mark in only 16 days.

Chicago – In the history of America, there are moments when champions rose above their societal status and circumstance. And so it came to pass that African American Jesse Owens – during one of most difficult times in America for blacks – won medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, representing America and striking a blow against Adolf Hitler, four years before WWII. Owen’s story is told in the new film, “Race,” and he is portrayed by actor Stephan James.
Life in Depression-era America was difficult for all citizens at the time, but never more so than the black population. Emerging from those times was James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens (Stephan James), a track athlete of extraordinary talent. He was called first to represent Ohio University, under the tutelage of Coach Larry Snyder (Jason Sudeikis). The coach molded Owen’s raw talent and soon he broke several world records. Deadpool's monster, $132.4 million three-day opening last weekend was the earliest a movie has ever opened with over $100 million by almost a month. Previously, Alice in Wonderland's $116.1 million opening in the first weekend of March 2010 held that distinction. Prior to that, film's didn't cross the century mark in their opening weekend until the beginning of summer. It certainly is a new era as studios are redefining release patterns every month. This weekend Deadpool doesn't face much competition in the way of new releases and will retain the number one spot handily. The weekend's three new wide releases vying for a spot below Deadpool include Sony's faith-based feature Risen, Focus' Jesse Owens biopic Race and A24's period horror The Witch. Beginning with number one, history shows that when a film opens with over $100 million it tends to drop, on average, around 54.3% in its second weekend. Films that score an "A" CinemaScore or higher,...

Production has wrapped on 20th Century Fox's highly-anticipated sci-fi sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, which is set for release on June 24, 2016, almost exactly 20 years after the original Independence Day hit theaters in 1996. While fans wait for the first full trailer to debut, director Roland Emmerich revealed new details in an interview with Collider. The official synopsis released this summer stated that humanity always knew the aliens would come back, and the director says that the aliens who were destroyed in the original movie were just one of the "hives."
"Well, it's only like one of the hives, like kind of moving around. [Laughs] What we did this time, we tried to expand the universe, too. It's not as simple as the last one because you cannot make it as simple as the last one. Also it's a little bit about what happened to our world when you know that they are coming back.

Fox's hit series Gotham has added a new series regular for Season 2, with actor Michael Chiklis signing on to play Captain Nathanial Barnes. The actor is certainly no stranger to playing a law enforcement officer, starring as Detective Vic Mackey in FX's cop drama The Shield for seven seasons. Unlike Vic Mackey, though, his new character Nathanial Barnes is certainly not a crooked cop, as he attempts to clean up the Gotham City Police Department. Here's what the show's producers told TV Line about Nathanial Barnes.
"(He) lands on the Gcpd like a tornado, ripping out the dead wood of Gotham's police force. He is a law and order zealot; unafraid of making enemies - on either side of the law. For Gordon (Ben McKenzie), Barnes is a hero and a mentor, someone with whom he can share the burden of heroism. Captain Barnes proves himself to be a strong ally to Gordon.

There was no real surprise when Independence Day 2 was announced. With the original 1996 movie having seen huge box office success, discussions about a possible sequel have rumbled on for years. Its twentieth anniversary year seems fitting, then, to finally revisit the story of a world uniting (behind America, obviously) against an extra-terrestrial threat. The surprises of the sequel lay in the casting announcements, however.
Independence Day featured an impressive ensemble cast – in the vein of the great disaster movies of a bygone era, such as The Towering Inferno or The Poseidon Adventure. Despite this, the plot really centred on two main characters – David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) and Captain Steve Hiller (Will Smith). Ultimately, Levinson would couple his own technical expertise with the piloting talents of Hiller to save the world from annihilation by a hostile alien threat. The makers of Independence Day 2 quickly confirmed that, while Jeff Goldblum would be...

Sequels to massive summer blockbusters arrive in theaters with a built-in audience who, like most people, want to see a story to its conclusion. An added bonus for those same moviegoers is when studios manage to corral the same actors back into the fold. You know, so you’re not left wondering why Tony Stark’s dad looks loads different to the last time you saw him. Luckily, Roland Emmerich has for the most part convinced the cast of Independence Day to reprise their roles for its sequel Independence Day 2 (which may be called Independence Day Forever: Part 1).
While Will Smith has turned down offers to star (’cause he’s busy filming a little movie called Suicide Squad), the majority of his onscreen chums have said yes to those same exact opportunities. Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox and even Brent Spiner have signed on for another battle with the extraterrestrials.

Those fresh faces include Charlotte Gainsbourg (Nymphomaniac, Melancholia), Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games series), who is expected to play the son-in-law of Bill Pullman’s President Whitmore from the 1996 original, and Jessie Usher (When The Game Stands Tall), who will bust out the quips as the stepson of Will Smith’s fast-talking pilot Steven Hiller.
With specifics on Tope’s role under wraps, there’s a good chance he may also play a character tenuously linked to the original as well. Forging a stronger connection to that first outing are a small ensemble of...

Well, if there's going to be an "Independence Day" sequel without Will Smith, our only requirement was that Jeff Goldblum return. And he is. So all is right with the world. Roland Emmerich announced on Twitter that Goldblum's MIT nerd David Levinson would be back for the sequel, with Liam Hemsworth also joining the gang in a lead role. But the name we should probably be paying attention to is Jessie Usher, who THR reports has been cast in the key part of Will Smith's son from the first movie. The actor is currently the lead of Starz's "Survivor's Remorse," and also featured in "When The Game Stands Tall," but this will be his first blockbuster outing. Meanwhile, we just want to know when it becomes official that Bill Pullman is returning. "Independence Day 2" saves the planet on June 24, 2016. Excited to Officially announce @LiamHemsworth and #JeffGoldblum as the...

We don't quite know what Independence Day 2 will be about, but we do know Roland Emmerich is returning to direct and the film is set to hit theaters on June 24, 2016, almost exactly 20 years after the original made Will Smith a star and a little over one year after Focus told us that star status is fading. However, as for the film's plot, we are just now getting our first taste as we'll begin with THR's report that Jessie Usher ("Survivor's Remorse", When the Game Stands Tall) has been cast as a central character in the new film as the son of Smith's character from the original. There were reports there were two scripts for the film floating around, one if Smith decided to return as Captain Steven Hiller and another if he didn't. I can only now assume the only difference was whether or not it would be Smith's...

When Independence Day exploded onto the big screen in 1996, it became a box office smash hit. Its effective mix of science fiction, ground-breaking special effects, and disaster movie themes turned it into the quintessential summer blockbuster, and paved the way for director Roland Emmerich to wage cinematic war on countless iconic landmarks in subsequent movies, such as Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 and White House Down. Surprisingly, a sequel has been slow to develop – but the wait is almost over now, as finally, almost two decades later, Independence Day 2 is on its way – with Jessie Usher now cast.
Plot details are, of course, tightly under wraps, but we can surmise from the casting that a high level of continuity can be expected. Jeff Goldblum will apparently reprise his role as codebreaker and day saviour, David Levinson, and Jessie Usher is set to play the son of Will Smith’s Independence Day character,...

Director Roland Emmerich revealed on his personal Facebook page today that Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum and Jessie Usher have signed on for roles in Independence Day 2. Naturally, Jeff Goldblum will be reprising his role as David Levinson from the original 1996 blockbuster Independence Day, but the filmmaker would not say who the other actors are playing. However, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Jessie Usher will play the son of Will Smith's Captain Stephen Hiller from the original movie in a central role.
It's worth noting that, in the original Independence Day, Stephen Hiller's girlfriend Jasmine Dubrow (Vivica A. Fox) had a young son named Dylan (Ross Bagley), although Stephen was not the father. It's possible that Jessie Usher may be playing Dylan, 20 years later, since it wasn't known if Hiller had children or not. Coming off one of the busiest weekends in years, the box office is going to quiet down significantly this coming weekend.Hot Tub Time Machine 2, McFarland, USA and The Duff are all opening in at least 2,500 theaters, though it would be surprising if any of these took in over $15 million this weekend. Therefore, the top three spots should once again belong to Fifty Shades of Grey, Kingsman: The Secret Service and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.Coming off a massive $85.2 million debut, Fifty Shades of Grey seems poised to take a dive this weekend. Word-of-mouth is mixed, die-hard book fans likely already made it out last weekend, and romantic movies tend to fall hard coming off Valentine's Day. About Last Night (2014), Endless Love and Valentine's Day all fell at least 70 percent on this same weekend, while the Twilight sequels and The Fault in our Stars had similar second weekend drops.

Thanks to the successful film adaptations of The Hunger Games franchise and The Fault In Our Stars, 2014 could be dubbed the year of the Ya. The genre of books took over the box office with other big screen takes on the first of the Divergent series, The Giver, If I Stay, and The Maze Runner.
While the primary focus on these films was the young stars that embodied the angst-ridden teens of the books, every one of these movies was supported by an award-winning adult actor. Even Meryl Streep got into the Ya game, adding pedigree to The Giver, which starred budding star Brenton Thwaites.
But how did Streep compare to Julianne Moore, who stepped into the role of President Coin in the third Hunger Games film, or to Kate Winslet, who portrayed the villain in the first installment of Divergent? We ranked all of the 2014 film performances based on who used their Oscar prowess to maximum...

Here's a priceless chunk of dialogue, spoken between a pair of friends/rivals on 23 Blast's high school football team: "It is so easy for you!" one boy shouts, shirtless and sculpted and chest-depilated, from the back of a rusted-out pickup truck. "Easy?" his teammate shoots back. "I'm blind!" And he is. This gentle-souled, based-on-a-true-story Christly sports feature dramatizes the unlikely return to the gridiron of nice guy Travis Freeman (Mark Hapka), a promising player who loses his eyesight but still gets to take the field for the big game's last play. Risible as that may sound, Dylan Baker's film bests larger-budgeted fare like When the Game Stands Tall thanks to ace acting, a humble spirit, and all-around sturdy craftsmanship. It's also a great re...

That Cabin Fever remake is actually happening, but not in the way one might expect. It’s being reported that the film will go into production this week in Portland, Oregon, but there’s no mention of a screenwriter. Why? Because director Travis Zariwny will be working with the exact same script that Eli Roth and Randy Pearlstein co-penned for the 2002 edition. Hit the jump for more on how that will work and to check out the new crop of 20-somethings that will face off against the notorious flesh-eating virus. According to Deadline, this new rendition of Cabin Fever will star Gage Golightly of Teen Wolf, Paranormal Activity 3’s Dustin Ingram, Exists’ Samuel Davis, Matthew Daddario of When the Game Stands Tall and Nadine Crocker. Just like the original, they’ll rent a cabin in the woods and come in contact with a wicked virus that eats away at their skin.

Update, Monday, 1:44 Pm: The Equalizer came in beneath Sony’s estimates, bringing in $34.1 million for the three-day weekend, easily running over the other newcomer, the animated The Boxtrolls. However, the Denzel Washington film is likely to get side-swiped next weekend by the David Fincher-directed mystery thriller Gone Girl, which is already tracking well for an expected big weekend haul for Fox. Based on the best-selling book by Gillian Flynn, the Ben Affleck-starrer may end up cannibalizing the audience away from Denzel. Gone Girl opens in 50 markets around the world next weekend, too, giving it the first wide international rollout of the fall.
Meanwhile, Focus Features’ The Boxtrolls ended up with a $17.2M take as the first animated fare since June to grace theaters. It gets another weekend before Disney drops Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day on October 10. Heck of a title and...

In a weekend where not even a new release can break into the top ten at the box office (to be fair, The Identical remains universally reviled for all but the most diehard bad movie buffs), Guardians of the Galaxy took the top spot yet again with a mere estimated $10.2 million. With nothing else making over $10 million (even Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles made only an estimated $6.5 million), this weekend remains one of the weakest for some time, losing almost half the revenue from last weekend.
However, despite the drop-off, everything in the top ten has made gross profit…with the possible exception of As Above, So Below (estimated $3.7 million) and The November Man (estimated $4.2 million), which have not revealed their budgets. While those two swapped positions from last week, the rest of the list remained mostly static.

Margaret here with the weekend’s box office report-- which, if you squint, could easily be mistaken for last weekend's box office report.
It was a rough couple days for moviegoers and moviemakers alike. The weekend after Labor Day is famously among the slowest year so all major studios steered clear. Guardians of the Galaxy handily took its fourth #1 and the rest of the top fifteen looks very familiar.
The only new nationwide release was The Identical, an faith-based indie movie that is currently sitting pretty with a RottenTomatoes score of 4%. Even without any competition from other new films it couldn't crack the top ten. New in limited release, Stuart Murdoch's quirkfest musical God Help the Girl did respectable business on two screens but came in around #45.
