Set on the morning of January 30, 1968, during the Vietnam War, "In Spite of Courage" tells the story of two soldier's fight for survival, and details as to why they joined the Army during the back drop of the VietCong's surprise military attack known as the Tet Offensive. On a remote location in South Vietnam, soldiers at a U.S. Army camp are awaken to mortar fire, machine guns, and grenades. They are under surprise attack by the VietCong who had earlier agreed to a cease fire with the U.S. and South Vietnamese military forces for celebration of the Tet holiday. The entire U.S. camp is massacred leaving only two surviving soldiers from the same platoon; best friend's Curtis and Marvin who have escaped the camp and are now on the run from the VietCong to get to the rally point where a U.S. helicopter will take them to safety. While on the run, Curtis and Marvin reminisce about their lives back in the U.S. and the recent surprise attack of their camp. Curtis reveals his tragic secret as to why he joined the military and what effects it had on him as a child.
