- Lily has gone into labor, and Marshall is no where in sight. As Lily is feeling the physical pain associated with the contractions, she requires the assistance of Ted and Robin to keep her mind on other things by telling her stories of their past, whether she's heard the stories before or not. One of the longer but simpler stories involves the mysterious door at MacLaren's which one by one each walks through to experience the wonder on the other side. But as she makes it into the delivery room about to give birth, Marshall is still no where to be seen, although someone in her life is there, he who she may not want to see at this specific time. Meanwhile, a drunk Marshall is stranded in Atlantic City with Barney. They try one tactic after another to make their way back to New York City, most of those tactics surrounding the motorcycle to be won through one of the slot machines. As they eventually do manage to secure transportation, their ultimate destination is outside of their control. But if Barney can manage to get Marshall to the hospital in time, his payment is be able to give the baby his middle name.—Huggo
- Part 1
Lily starts going into labor but refuses to go to the hospital until Marshall is there with her. Ted starts to panic as he does not know what to do in this situation. Ted decides to draft a labor announcement email, but the email is more about himself rather than being about the coming baby. Robin on the other hand is a farm hand and has seen a horse giving birth and considers herself perfectly equipped to deal with Lily ready to give birth. Robin offers to go in elbow deep to pull the baby out, if required. Robin gives Lily sugar cubes and asks her to get down on all fours and spread her hind quarters.
Ted's email goes to Lily's father who calls to say that he is coming. Lily's father can list down possibly everything that can go wrong in a particular medical situation and is the absolute worst person to have around.
Ted and Robin try to distract her with stories from their past until her contractions are four minutes apart. Stories include the worst cab drive ever, when the driver got into an argument with a homeless person. The homeless person beats the driver and takes over the cab and drives away with Ted and Robin in it. The time when Robin thought she slept with Neil Young, but it wasn't Neil Young. A mysterious door at the bar that nobody had noticed before, and simply opened into a cabinet. Once, Marshall bought a pair of checked pants which nobody at the thrift store had worn for years. He believes that the pants are cursed as ever since he bought them, he stubbed his toe, missed his train and so on. He found a handwritten note in Chinese in the pants, which leads him deep into the heart of Chinatown. Apparently, the note was from a dry-cleaner for a matching checked coat. The time when Barney tried to pick up women as the Terminator. The time when Ted had a freakishly long arm hair, which turns out to be a thread.
Lily refuses to go to the hospital without Marshall, so Robin readies to pull the baby out herself. Lily finally agrees to go to the hospital. The doctor refuses to administer epidural as Lily is progressing much faster than expected.
Meanwhile, Barney and Marshall are stuck in Atlantic City following the events of "Good Crazy" and must find a way back to Manhattan for the birth. There is a 4 hour wait at the valet stand and they are in no shape to drive themselves. There are no cabs available in the city to get to the train station either. Barney offers to help Marshall on the condition that Marshall's son has the middle name "Wait-for-It". Barney tries to steal a showcase motorcycle but is stopped by security.
Marshall agrees and Barney manages to secure two seats on a bus to New York - only for Marshall to realize that the destination refers to the state of New York and not New York City; its final destination is actually Buffalo. The two are left trying to find another way back to the city when several senior citizens on the bus, inspired by Marshall's predicament, claim to be having heart attacks to force the driver to take a detour to the hospital where Lily is giving birth.
Lily starts giving birth without Marshall, and Robin faints at the sight of the birth. Marshall arrives just in time for his son to be born, whom Lily names after Marshall's late father and honors Barney's condition, and everyone welcomes Marvin Wait-for-It Eriksen into the world.
