The nominations for the most coveted acclaim in the film industry, the Oscars, are known for sparking widespread reactions, with the discussions surrounding the surprising entries and notable snubs. Bradley Cooper’s 2023 film Maestro was no exception, with many labeling it as classic ‘Oscar bait.’

However, the recently announced 2025 Oscar nominations, which featured several major snubs across multiple categories, have prompted some to reassess the film more favorably. Critics and fans alike are now pointing out that Maestro may not have been as undeserving as initially thought, especially in light of what they perceive as a decline in the quality of this year’s nominations.

Despite reports that audiences wanted less sex on the big screen, hanky panky has made an impressive comeback in the last year. A few thoughts.
Last year saw a rise in films that explored sex and specifically women’s desire on the big screen. Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor got in a steamy love triangle in Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers and Nicole Kidman is currently drinking milk at Harris Dickinson’s command in UK cinemas in Halina Reijn’s Babygirl, which debuted in 2024. Anora, Sean Baker’s sex worker comedy-drama is one of the front-runners at this year’s awards season after bagging the Palme d’Or at Cannes last year.
We also got treated to more queer sex on screen, still a bit of an anomaly, at least in the mainstream. Alongside Challengers, Guadagnino also offered us Queer, in which Daniel Craig’s William begins a relationship with a much younger man,...

The 2025 Oscar nominations saw a number of big names and Oscar favorites (Angelina Jolie, Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Luca Guadagnino and the rest of the Challengers team) miss out on recognition this year.
Indeed, Challengers — despite being in the awards conversation all season, with Golden Globe nominations for the film and star Zendaya and a Globe win for best score for Oscar faves Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross — failed to receive a single Oscar nomination on Thursday morning.
Challengers director Luca Guadagnino also saw his other awards hopeful film, the Daniel Craig starrer Queer, fail to receive any nominations, including for Craig, who was seen as a possible best actor nominee though he was notably snubbed by the BAFTAs.
Also snubbed by the BAFTAs but still was a possible nominee was two-time Oscar winner Washington, who was left out of the best supporting actor category for his work in Gladiator II,...

“I’m Still Here” (Sony Pictures Classics)
Surprise: “I’m Still Here”
The Brazilian drama by director Walter Salles (“Central Station”) deservedly popped up in the Best Picture category, after already scoring noms for Best International Film and Best Actress (Fernanda Torres). Most experts were expecting its Best Picture slot to go to “Sing Sing,” “A Real Pain” or “September 5.”
Margaret Qualley on the set of “The Substance” (Mubi)
Snub: Margaret Qualley
The bold and very game actress from “The Substance” could not quite ride that film’s coattails all the way to nomination morning, missing out on a Supporting Actress nod.

The nominations for the 2025 Academy Awards were announced this morning.
And as usual, film fans are upset over a handful of shocking snubs.
For starters, Angelina Jolie did not receive a nomination for her role in Maria, a performance that many considered the finest of her career.

And she wasn’t the only A-lister to receive a disappointing call from her agent today.
Denzel Washington was shut out for his work in Gladiator II, and Daniel Craig was snubbed for his revelatory performance in Queer.
But while some of Hollywood’s most revered talents might not be taking home any hardware this year, a slew of major talents are celebrating their first nominations.

The nominations have been revealed for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, and one critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ film is notably absent from the pack of nominees.
The annual awards ceremony will return for a 36th year in 2025. According to GLAAD, it’s goal is to “recognize and honor fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community in an ever-expanding and media landscape.”
On Wednesday (January 22), the organization revealed the crop of nominees that would be honored at the ceremony. While projects such as Wicked and Queer were notably featured, Netflix’s Emilia Perez was left off the list.
The snub comes after GLAAD declared that the movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, was “not good trans representation” in a November 2024 essay. The story included reviews from transgender film critics and noted that “inauthentic portrayals of trans people are offensive and even dangerous.”

The Oscar nominations will be announced on Thursday after being twice-delayed due to the Los Angeles wildfires. Almost 10,000 registered Gold Derby users have placed their bets in all categories, and we’ve crunched the numbers to generate our official odds.
Emilia Pérez is expected to dominate the list with 11 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña), and Best Adapted Screenplay, with three expected wins for Saldaña, Best Original Song (“El Mal”), and Best International Feature. But the film expected to collect the top prizes is The Brutalist. Both of those movies won Golden Globes for Best Picture — Emilia as a comedy/musical, Brutalist as a drama — but it’s the latter that has jumped the top of our Oscars Best Picture rankings. Of its 10 anticipated noms, The Brutalist is also ahead to win Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Actor (Adrien Brody), Best Cinematography,...

The 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards nominations list included one significant omission. Netflix’s Emilia Pérez was left off the nonprofit advocacy group’s list of “303 culture-changing nominees across 33 categories, honoring outstanding fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues in film, television, gaming, publishing, stage productions, music, podcasting, journalism, and more.”
The snub further illustrates the disconnect between LGBTQ media and the entertainment industry over the controversial crime musical from French filmmaker Jacques Audiard. Emilia Pérez is widely predicted to receive several Oscar nominations on Thursday. The movie could set multiple Academy Awards records, including the most nominations ever for an international film and the most nominations for any film. The film’s star, Karla Sofia Gascón, is also predicted to make history as the first openly trans woman nominated for Best Actress. Emilia Pérez has already set a Golden Globes record with the most nominations ever...

Warfare's release date has been announced by A24, and it means that Alex Garland's new movie could repeat Civil War's success. After Ex Machina, Annihilation, Men, and Civil War, Garland co-wrote and co-directed his next project alongside Ray Mendoza, and the film is based on the former's experiences during the Iraq War, following a platoon of Navy SEALs on a mission through insurgent territory in 2006. The cast includes D'Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henrique Zaga, Joseph Quinn, and Charles Melton.
Per Deadline, A24 has set a nationwide theatrical release for Warfare on April 11. This is around the same time that Alex Garland's Civil War opened to much box office success for the studio in 2024. Other movies opening on April 11 include Christopher Landon's thriller Drop from Universal/Blumhouse, the espionage thriller The Amateur...

“Kraven the Hunter” (Sony) flopped in theaters when it opened five weeks ago (not even $25 million grossed in the U.S./Canada), but the Marvel world-adjacent action film had enough interest to vie for top home VOD title last week. It placed first at Fandango (which calculates by revenue) and second currently at iTunes (ranking by transactions), although it was #1 at the latter its first three days in release.
“Wicked” (Universal) in its third week of home release remained #1 at iTunes, but dropped to second at Fandango. Both rent for 48 hours for $19.99.
At Netflix, “Back in Action” is the latest original movie to lead their top 10. The spy comedy, Jamie Foxx’s first TV movie since 2004, and Cameron Diaz’s first film of any kind in over a decade, is the kind of star-driven lightweight effort that used to populate theaters on a regular basis. For me the year of 2024 was a challenging one. Between being in hospital or housebound at home, I could not attend any press shows or even visit my local cinemas. However, I have tried to catch up with some of the more important films of the year. I have missed many I would like to have seen, but time marches on and I have made the best of a bad situation. If it was a tough year for me, it also seems to have brought many films dealing with various difficulties to our cinema screens.
Take, for instance, Edward Berger’s Conclave. What could be more challenging than the selection of a new Pope? Ralph Fiennes in this role is torn between tradition and scandals concerning the possible candidates. Then there was Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, where a Mexican cartel leader is forced to disappear...

From director Jane Schoenbrun, A24’s I Saw the TV Glow tells the eerie story of two friends (Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine) whose realities start to collapse around their favorite television series. The movie received a leading nine Dorian nominations including Film of the Year, LGBTQ Film of the Year, and Director of the Year, while both Smith and Lundy-Paine were nominated for their performances. Singer and actor Omar Apollo recently made waves by posting a bold full-frontal shot from his new movie ‘Queer.’ Sharing the image online, Apollo joined the celebration for the film’s digital release on platforms like Prime Video and iTunes in the US.
‘Queer,’ directed by Luca Guadagnino, is a daring and visually striking adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novel. The film stars Daniel Craig as William Lee, a fictionalized version of the author. Lee, an American expat wandering through Mexico, spends his days stumbling from bar to bar, searching for romantic and sexual encounters with men.
Apollo appears early in the film, portraying a man Lee picks up in a bar. Their brief but steamy scenes culminate in an explicit, eye-catching full-frontal moment that has caught the attention of fans and critics alike.
Later in the movie, the focus shifts to Lee’s obsession with Eugene Allerton, played by Drew Starkey.

Every single actor who's played James Bond has had a love/hate relationship with the role. For Sean Connery, landing the Bond films was a double-edged sword, as the Scottish star eventually came to feel boxed in by playing England's greatest spy, leading to him making a string of jarringly bleak films in the 1970s, including Christopher Nolan's favorite Connery film, "The Offence" in 1973. Throughout that time, Connery could be heard talking about how he "hated" James Bond, and even how he'd "like to kill him."
That sort of set a precedent, with every actor who played 007 in the ensuing years developing a similar relationship with the role. Roger Moore was never comfortable with, of all things, using guns, and after leaving the saga Pierce Brosnan claimed (via CBS) to have regretted the "stupid one-liners" and was glad to no longer be "shackled by some contracted image." Once again, the last time the Best Original Screenplay Oscar was won exclusively by someone who did not direct the film was in 2011 for “The King’s Speech.” More specifically, the last time a director won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay who was not also nominated for Best Director that year was when Spike Jonze won for “Her” a decade ago.
So with that in mind, consider Sean Baker (“Anora”), Coralie Fargeat (“The Substance”), and Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold (“The Brutalist”) shoo-ins for a...

After the majority of nominations for precursors have been announced, the frontrunner for the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar happens to be one of the scripts that was ineligible for a WGA Award nomination.
Though people are still hesitant to say “Conclave” will win Best Picture, the consensus after the film’s Best Screenplay win at the Golden Globes (and Peter Straughan’s speech), is that his adaptation of the 2016 Robert Harris novel is the contender to beat.

Queer’s ending is so confusing it might leave some people massively disappointed. Luca Guadagnino is a filmmaker whose work is both aesthetically pleasing and deeply thought-provoking. A director who specifically understands the Gen Z zeitgeist and what it’s hungry for, in my opinion. And while his previous work like Call Me By Your Name and more recently Challengers prove this statement outwardly, I think Queer explains it best in a non-expressive way. Based on William S. Burroughs’ novella, the 2024 drama takes a deep dive into the Queer scene of 1950s Mexico City and the loneliness that comes with queer identity. I say comes with rather than came with because I think the state of mind that the main character Lee is in is deeply relevant even today. Lee’s character is directly based on Burroughs and his dark conquests in the 50s. While I haven’t read the book,...

The 2025 BAFTA nominations had its share of snubs and surprises, some less so than others (Denzel Washington missing again is just par for the course now). The final televised precursor — and an industry one to boot — made the acting categories even messier while ostensibly taking other contenders out of the running. Here’s where we’re at with all four races post-bafta nominations.
Best Actor
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, SAG and BAFTA nominations: Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave)
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG nominations: Daniel Craig (Queer)
Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and BAFTA nominations: Hugh Grant (Heretic)
Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations: Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice)
Assuming the top four are in — as many have all season, and the quartet has not missed a beat — that leaves one spot up for grabs. Craig has occupied that spot in the odds all season long,...

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) surprised everyone with its 2025 film nominations by giving more attention to smaller independent films instead of big Hollywood movies.
“Kneecap,” a low-budget Irish-language film about a rap group from Belfast, received six nominations, making it a strong candidate. The film earned spots in key categories, including original screenplay, outstanding British film, and films not in the English language.
The Hollywood musical “Wicked” received mixed results in the nominations. Although the film earned five technical nominations and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande received acting nominations, it missed the best film award. The French musical “Emilia Pérez” was chosen, highlighting that BAFTA viewers prefer European works.
Hugh Grant’s turn to darker parts paid off with a nomination for best actor in the horror film Heretic. In it, he portrays a menacing loner who stalks missionaries. From his usual romantic comedy parts,...

Today, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) released the film nominations for 2025, with two international films leading the list. Edward Berger’s papal thriller Conclave received 12 nominations, and Jacques Audiard’s musical Emilia Pérez received 11 nominations.
Both films have open categories for the best film, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The Brutalist, directed by Brady Corbet and a Golden Globe winner, has received nine nominations.
Universal Pictures led the nominations this year with 32 for its films. The studio has had success with several productions: “The Brutalist” received nine nominations, “Anora” and “Wicked” got seven each, “Nosferatu” had five, “The Wild Robot” got three, and “Monkey Man” received one. Netflix trails behind with 16 nominations, partly thanks to “Emilia Pérez.”

Denzel Washington, despite his incredible career and accolades, still hasn’t received a single BAFTA nomination. Washington, who stars in Gladiator II, is a 10-time Oscar nominee and two-time winner. He’s currently the joint-second favorite for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, but BAFTA has once again passed him by.
The BAFTA Film Awards nominations for 2025 were revealed today, and several major films missed out. Notably, there was no recognition for Queer, Challengers, Babygirl, or Paddington In Peru. The musical Wicked was also absent from the Best Film and Best Director categories.
Both Queer and Challengers, directed by Luca Guadagnino, had been in the running after receiving Golden Globe nominations. The leads, Daniel Craig and Zendaya, were also recognized by the Golden Globes, but neither film made it past the BAFTA longlist.
Nicole Kidman, who won Best Actress at Venice and was Golden Globe-nominated for her role in Babygirl, didn’t impress the BAFTA voters.

Wicked, Kneecap, Gladiator II star Denzel Washington, Sing Sing breakout Clarence Maclin, Queer lead Daniel Craig, and The Substance star Margaret Qualley were among the biggest snubs and surprises after the 78th annual BAFTA Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday.
Conclave and Emilia Pérez led all films with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively. Most of the expected Oscar contenders also landed predicted bids with British Academy of Film and Television Arts voters (the complete list of nominees is here). However, the BAFTA Awards snubs and surprises were slightly scooped by the BAFTA Awards themselves. Earlier this month, the BAFTA Awards revealed this year’s longlists in each category, with Netflix’s Emilia Pérez and Focus Features’ Conclave pacing the field with, respectively, 15 and 14 longlist mentions. Other contenders that performed well on the longlists included The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, and The Substance. These Bafta nominations have given us the traditional buffet of snubs for industry observers to frown at. Nothing at all for Luca Guadagnino’s tremendous drama Queer – its exuberant leading turn from Daniel Craig passed over. Nothing for the very moving Irish film Small Things Like These and so no Bafta nod for Cillian Murphy’s outstanding (arguably career-best) performance there. The appetite for Yorgos Lanthimos films starring Emma Stone seems to be maxed out. Nothing for their film Kinds of Kindness.
But one much-feared possible exclusion thankfully did not materialise: Marianne Jean-Baptiste has a best actress nomination for her superb performance in Mike Leigh’s blistering study of depression, Hard Truths, though no director nomination for Leigh himself.

The 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards nominations are in, with 42 films receiving nods on Wednesday morning. Despite making the BAFTA Film Awards longlist, Daniel Craig was notably missing when the final nominees were unveiled Wednesday.
The Queer star was not recognized among his peers Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Hugh Grant (Heretic), Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Colman Domingo for prison drama Sing Sing, Timothée Chalamet for Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, and Sebastian Stan for his portrayal of Donald Trump in The Apprentice, who all made the shortlist.
Craig was nominated for Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, and SAG awards, though has been what many would call snubbed by the British Academy in his native U.K. He was part of The Hollywood Reporter‘s actor roundtable last month.
Beloved by Brits for his iconic role in the James Bond franchise, Craig took on the lead part in Luca Guadagnino’s Queer. He played William Lee, an American expat in his mid-50s leading a solitary existence in Mexico City.

“Conclave” and “Emilia Pérez” lead this year’s BAFTA Film Awards nominations, heading up a diverse mix of talent and titles in a competition where, for the first time in years, there’s no clear favorite in any of the major categories.
“The Brutalist,” “Anora,” “Dune: Part Two” “Wicked” and “A Complete Unknown” are also very much in contention, while the likes of Demi Moore (“The Substance”), Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”), Jeremy Strong (“The Apprentice”), Ariana Grande (“Wicked”), Selena Gomez (“Emilia Pérez”), Mikey Madison (“Anora”), Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”), Yura Borisov (“Anora”), Isabella Rossellini (“Conclave”), Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia Pérez”) and Guy Pearce (“The Brutalist”) are among the 12 of 24 nominated performers — both established and rising — getting their very first BAFTA nod.
Elsewhere, there’s space for BAFTA regulars, such as Saoirse Ronan (“The Outrun”), Hugh Grant (“Heretic”) and Jamie Lee Curtis (“The Last Showgirl”), yet the ongoing quest for BAFTA to...

On Wednesday, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced its 78th annual BAFTA Awards nominees, with expected contenders Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez nominated for Best Film.
Conclave led all films with 12 nominations, including bids for Best Film, Best British Film, Best Director for Edward Berger, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, Best Actor for Ralph Fiennes, and Best Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini. It’s the second time BAFTA voters have widely embraced a Berger feature in three years after giving All Quiet on the Western Front 14 nominations in 2023.
In second, just behind the nominations leader, was Emilia Pérez. Netflix’s top contender landed 11 BAFTA Award nominations, including Best Film, Best Film Not in English Language, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jacques Audiard, Best Actress for Karla Sofia Gascón, and Best Supporting Actress for Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña.

Over two decades ago, a young actor by the name of Adrien Brody shocked fans and critics across the world with his impeccable portrayal of the celebrated musician Władysław Szpilman in The Pianist (2002). Brody won the Academy Award for Best Actor for that role, becoming the youngest actor (at 29) to achieve this honor.

And now, he is potentially close to bagging another Academy Award with his latest film, The Brutalist. An epic period drama film about a Hungarian-born Jewish architect, Brody is absolutely magnificent in it. But surprisingly, it is also a role that he almost lost.

The movie Queer is now available to rent or own at home and fans will likely be wondering if Drew Starkey really went full frontal in that scene or not.
The 31-year-old actor, best known for playing Rafe on Netflix’s Outer Banks, bares it all during the movie, but fans have questioned whether that’s all him or if he’s wearing a prosthetic.
Drew has confirmed the answer.
Keep reading to find out more…
In an interview with Time, Drew revealed he’s wearing a prosthetic over his private parts.
Co-star Omar Apollo wouldn’t confirm or deny if he wore one, but Daniel Craig confirmed he also wore a prosthetic.
“They’re young. They’re young and beautiful,” Daniel said of why he didn’t go full frontal.
Drew was asked about how he broke the ice with his co-stars and he talked about preparing in movement rehearsals.

Luca Guadagnino released two films in 2024, and coming off the energetic “Challengers” was the more introspective “Queer.” The filmmaker’s latest stars Daniel Craig as William Lee, a fictionalized stand-in for author William S. Burroughs, whose slender novel the movie is based on.
The movie premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and later played the New York Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival. A24 acquired the domestic distribution rights to the movie, with Mubi releasing the movie internationally.
But how can you watch Guadagnino’s latest? Read on to find out.
Is “Queer” streaming?
After being released in theaters last November and December, “Queer” is now finally available to rent on Digital. The film will eventually be streaming on Max due to an output deal between the streamer and A24, but a streaming release date has not yet been revealed. “Queer” will also be released on Blu-ray in April.

One month ago, we asked Gemini AI for Oscar predictions, and it endorsed Gladiator II as a contender for picture, director (Ridley Scott), and supporting actor (Denzel Washington). Well, Google’s artificial intelligence bot has rebooted, and it now believes the mixed-reviewed sequel will be mostly forgotten come Oscars time. In fact, Gemini’s current picks in the six main categories align much more closely with Gold Derby’s overall choices.
You can see Gemini’s forecasted nominations below, where The Brutalist, a period piece about a Holocaust survivor who’s trying to live the American Dream, is expected to clean up with bids for picture, director (Brady Corbet), actor (Adrien Brody), supporting actress (Felicity Jones), and supporting actor (Guy Pearce). Meanwhile, Anora, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez are expected to nab four noms apiece in the six main races.

After a collaboration on the modern-day tennis romance “Challengers,” director Luca Guadagnino turned again to Jonathan Anderson for the costume design of his next film, “Queer,” starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey.
“Queer” is an adaptation of William S. Burrough’s auto-fiction about alter ego Lee (Craig), a middle-aged drug addict wandering through Mexico City in the late 1940s. For Anderson, the famed creative director of Loewe and Jw Anderson, this period-specific assignment expanded his imagination about what could be achieved within the guardrails of mid-century wardrobe.
The clothes worn by Lee and Allerton (Starkey), a figure of Lee’s obsession in the story, were designed to evoke the essence of the characters. Lee’s white suit, for example, turns browner as the plot proceeds – and Anderson even had an idea, though unrealized, to stain the fabric with actual heroin. With Allerton, his translucent short-sleeved shirts foreshadow a drug-fantasia sequence late in the film,...

With the new year having just rolled around, the biggest Hollywood event of the year, the Oscars, are just around the corner, with the official list of nominees to be announced soon. However, with the Golden Globes having wrapped up, and the nominations for the SAG awards having been announced, there are more than enough clues to at least get a solid idea of how the nominations and awards for the most prestigious event in Hollywood are going to go.
One of the frontrunners for the Academy Award for Best Actor is Adrien Brody for his starring role in The Brutalist, which itself is in contention for Best Picture. Brody has been nominated for the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor and also won the 2025 Golden Globe for Best Drama Performance by a Male Actor. If Brody's hot streak continues into the Academy Awards, and he does end up winning,...

There is no shortage of competitors for the Best Actor category hoping to be nominated for the Oscars 2025 and try to win. The Academy Award for the best lead male actor is one of the biggest awards each year, which is no different in 2025. Following in the footsteps of Cillian Murphy's breakthrough win for Oppenheimer in 2024, there is an entirely new crop of performers who want to win this year. They'll be among the nominees in all Oscars 2025 categories, as voters decide which five actors deserve the nominations before narrowing it down to one winner.
As the ones in front of the camera, actor awards can often get more attention than the 2025 Oscars Best Director nominations. There is usually plenty of overlap between the actors who are nominated for Best Actor and the selection of films contending for Best Picture. Since those ten movies are deemed the best of the best,...
