- When Lily and Marshall can't decide on godparents for Marvin, they put the gang to the test to see who would make the best one.
- Marshall and Lily's entire world for the past five months has been Marvin to the exclusion of all else, including their friends. Now that Mickey has taken some of the child rearing off their plate, a constantly tearful Lily and Marshall now worry about what their mortality means for little Marvin's welfare if they were to depart the world sooner than later. As they complete their will, they run into the obstacle of who they will name as Marvin's guardian. As they exhaust the list of all their living blood relatives, dismissing each for one reason or another, their thoughts turn to their three best friends, who all actively campaign for the position. That campaigning irks Marshall and Lily, who decide to choose between the three using one of Marshall's passions in life. The question becomes how much of the unusual scrutiny Barney, Robin and Ted will endure for the opportunity to be Marvin's godparent and potential guardian.—Huggo
- With Mickey now taking care of Marvin, Marshall and Lily finally reunite with the gang at MacLaren's. However, when the two ask Barney, Ted, and Robin about how they are doing, the three simply say everything's great. In reality, they have nothing good to say per Marshall and Lily's previous "eight-or-higher" decree: Victoria tells Ted a joke about him owing her father $70,000 for the wedding, Robin was duped by Nick about riding a motorbike powered by corn (Robin thought it would be a powerful motorbike like a Harley, but it turned out to be more like a Moped), and Barney just slept with another woman.
After a short drink, Marshall and Lily leave to spend some time together on the street. However, a close brush with a taxicab, that almost crashes into them, forces them to consider preparing a last will and testament, designating a guardian for Marvin in case either or both of them die (which saddens Lily at the mere mention of the word). Barney and Robin don't help as they narrate how NYC is unsafe with rickety elevators, exploding manhole covers, jealous husband and a mugging that took place not far from where Marshall and Lily live. The two argue over possibly designating Marshall's mother Judy (Suzie Plakson) (rejected after 45 minutes of arguing), Lily's mother (rejected after 78 minutes of arguing), his elder brother Marcus (Ned Rolsma) (who left his family despite being a good father), or Lily's parents as the guardian.
Ted, Barney, and Robin volunteer to be Marvin's guardian. They try to convince the parents with Ted and Robin competing on who can bring a bigger teddy bear, while Barney composes a series of folk songs indicating that he will teach little Marvin to grow to be a womanizer just like him.
Marshall and Lily hold a game show in the apartment called "Who Wants to be a Godparent?" The objective is to determine who of the three is suitable to be Marvin's godparent. As Ted, Barney, and Robin make trite answers to various questions on a game wheel, Marshall and Lily get angry at them for not appreciating how hard it is to be a parent. The first question is how to explain to Marvin in the event of Marshall and Lily's death. Barney says that he would simply tell Marvin that his parents have been called away on a super-secret space mission. Robin says that she would be open and direct with Marvin and tell him the brutal truth, just like her dad used to. Ted says that he would use a puppet and a bunch of metaphors to protect Marvin from the truth, yet gradually allow him to move on. The next question is, how would you handle Marvin when he takes another kid's toy. Barney would take away Marvin's $1900 alligator skin belt till he returns the kid's toy. Ted would be fair, but firm. Robin would send Marvin to the British Columbia Military School for Boys. The next question is how to teach Marvin about Birds and Bees. Barney would take him to Amsterdam. Ted would perform a rap song. Robin panders to Marshall's handsomeness and says that Marvin won't need to be taught anything. They move into the lightening round. Ted says that the game is ridiculous, and he has known Lily and Marshall for 16 years, and he should be the Godfather. Barney says that the kid will be virgin till he is 13, if he goes to Ted and hence Barney is the obvious choice. Robin says that only she is a woman, and she can teach Marvin how to hunt.
The three are also frustrated at the couple for being apathetic to their personal problems. The group reconciles by dropping the "eight-or-higher" rule and hang out at the bar once more. The next morning, Ted, Robin, and Barney wake up at the apartment and Robin and Ted step up to help take care of Marvin so Lily and Marshall can go back to sleep while Barney leaves the apartment. The two decide to list all three of them as their son's legal guardians.
