For all the American underdogs who fail to achieve the American "family" the film gives hope to achieve status unconventionally - it is worthwhile that we belong as people on the planet....it reveals American naivety in its people for false pursuits in the guise of nihilism zeitgeist which seems to have taken hold of the United States since the 1970s...while its dialogue is difficult at times to catch its subtleties the main purpose of the film is to support the new American oddball identities regardless of how these came to be, and is not a piece of entertainment for entertainment's sake but social commentary on greater problems plaguing the United States: are we worth keeping ourselves alive? The characters fail to deliver their lines as usual comedies do and build verbal and physical awkwardness to express this American angst many feel in real life...there is no perfect timing and the fight to prove the truth is valid.
The film is serious and of realism...the light humor of the tone and camaraderie lets us know we are not alone in this country and our lives are worth living - hope, family and the slight against the establishment (murder of police) - sits securely as the new American position for the new American family : us against the judge? System? Religion? Depression? Propaganda? And remember, never trust the guy with an acoustic guitar. It is he who is against us and representative of all those other institutions.
