- "Ray Donovan" - "A Mouth is a Mouth" - July 7, 2013
Ray's got all kinds of crises going on tonight but he handles each one with aplomb.
First up Lee Drexler is livid that Ray broke Stu Feldman's hand in the pool table and wants him to apologize. He also suggests, not jokingly it would seem, fellatio as a way of apologizing, but that very act is causing one of Ray's other headaches.
It seems that Tommy, the action movie star who was busted for picking up a trans woman and subsequently sent to "rehab" after taking the fall for the NBA guy, and not knowing is involved in a regular taking a video of him going down on her. Her name is Chloe and she wants a million dollars so she can afford gender affirming surgery. She meets with Ray and she says she feels bad but knows that a million is no skin off Tommy's back, even suggesting asking for two million, for which Ray ignores. Ray says he'll be in touch. And by touch, he means that he and Avi will later bust down the door to the apartment where Chloe lives, steal all the laptops in sight and confiscate the USB drive with the video on it. Ray chokes Chloe into understanding that this is the end of blackmailing Tommy the action movie hero. Chloe understands. Later, instead of apologizing or fellating, Ray takes the video to Stu-- who is back to sleeping with the former child starlet who went down on Ray and caused the whole hand breaking in the first place-- and has him put it in his safe. Stu gives him a pile of money, some of which Ray gives to Chloe.
His second problem comes in the form of another actor, Sean. We met him in the pilot and he seemed very concerned about Mickey being out of jail. Now we know why. 20 years ago, in Boston, whacked out on cocaine, Sean accidentally shot Ray's girlfriend and they pinned it on Mickey, thus his 20 year jail sentence. Sean is now upset because someone breached his very serious security system to deliver a picture: it is a photo of Sean and Mickey from 20 years earlier and on it is written "Good Times." Sean shows Ray his new baby and says to please protect his family. They get the video from the surveillance cameras and it shows Mickey dropping off Daryll, who scales the fence to deliver the photo. Ray has Avi send a return message. Avi beats the crap out of Daryll- the aspiring boxer-- and staples the picture to Daryll's chest. Ray reassures Sean that there will be no further security breaches.
Ray's final dilemma also comes on the homefront. Against his wishes Abby let Mickey in and spent the night boozing it up with him and hanging with the kids. The next day the kids are hanging with gramps so much that they beg to skip school to hang out with him and promise to keep it a secret from Ray. When Abby thinks Ray is on his way home-- he spent the previous evening in the city-- she hustles them all out and says no, off to school for them and to the gym for Mickey. But when Ray fields his various other problems and tells Abby something has come up she changes her mind and takes Mickey and the kids to Malibu for shopping and lunch. During their excursion, while Conor is trying on shoes, Mickey asks Conor if he is gay and then informs Conor that among the things he learned in prison is that it's okay to let a man fellate you because it's anal sex that really makes you gay. Mickey asks after the Ray-Abby union but she demurs saying it's private. She asks Mickey why Ray hates him so much. He says he was a bad father, a drug addict and dealer, a poor provider and not so great to the kids while their mother was dying. So, there's that. Ray calls Abby but she ignores it. He then calls Conor who picks up and immediately blabs that they're in Malibu with grandpa. Mickey gets on the phone and taunts Ray a little. On their way home they stop at the gym to drop off Mickey and take pictures with Bunchy and Terry for Bridget's family tree. Abby meets Daryll but asks to introduce the kids later because she hasn't told them the whole "Ray has a half-brother who is black" thing.
When Ray gets off with Mickey he freaks out, goes to his car, and gets a gun. But Avi quickly disarms him and gets him to calm down. Instead of shooting him, Ray confronts Mickey at the gym and basically tells him he's going to kill him but he won't see it coming.
In other Donovan family news, Terry's nurse may be hitting on him but he may be too shy to see it. However, in a scene showing Terry getting out of the shower, Terry feels his biceps and seems to have a little more self-esteem, Bunchy is still on his bender. In fact, Bunchy and Mickey are shown in the office sharing smoke, as Bunchy blows it into MIckey's mouth and drinking in the office.
Early in the episode Ray asked his assistant to check into the murder of a priest in Boston. At the end of the night--as Abby waits for him nervously smoking cigarettes at home-- Ray is at his place in the city. He receives a fax: it confirms that the priest who molested Bunchy (and maybe all of them) has indeed been killed. He allows himself a smile.
