ABC Orders Straight To Series Erin Brockovich-Inspired Drama ‘Rebel’ From Krista Vernoff Starring Katey Sagal

ABC Orders Straight To Series Erin Brockovich-Inspired Drama ‘Rebel’ From Krista Vernoff Starring Katey Sagal
ABC today has given a 10-episode straight-to-series order to Rebel, its Katey Sagal-starring drama inspired by the life of activist Erin Brockovich. It hails from Brockovich, Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 executive producer/showrunner Krista Vernoff, Davis Entertainment, Sony Pictures TV and ABC Signature. It will debut in 2021.

Rebel was one of five 2020 ABC pilots — all grounded by the coronavirus pandemic — that were selected by the network in June to shoot once production can resume safely. It joins two other projects from ABC’s 2020 pilot slate that have received straight-to-series orders for next this coming: David E. Kelley’s Big Sky, which already is filming in Vancouver, and Kari Lizer’s comedy Call Your Mother, which is also a Sony TV/ABC Signature co-production.

As a precursor to a straight-to-series order, ABC had commissioned a writers room for Rebel, which I hear has produced six scripts to date. The pickup

Sony’s Tony Vinciquerra: ‘The Broadcast Model for Comedies Doesn’t Work Anymore’

Sony’s Tony Vinciquerra: ‘The Broadcast Model for Comedies Doesn’t Work Anymore’
Correcting reports online that the studio was exiting the sitcom business, Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra clarified at BofA’s remote conference that the company was “significantly in the comedy business, to be very clear” — just not so much on the broadcast side.

“The broadcast model for comedies doesn’t work anymore,” he said. “The streaming model works great and we’re producing lots of comedies for streamers.”

He cited the recent premiere of Sony-produced “Woke” on Hulu, and said the independent studio has several other comedies in development.

“For broadcast networks, the model just doesn’t work where the broadcast network would pay a fee for the show that is significantly less than the production cost for that show is, and then we have to monetize it around the world,” said Vinciquerra. “That what’s we’ve taken the emphasis off of, and put more emphasis on the streaming side.

NBCUniversal Elevates Pearlena Igbokwe to TV Content Chief, Bonnie Hammer Named Vice Chairman
Universal Television chief Pearlena Igbokwe has been elevated to head of TV content for NBCUniversal as part of the broader shakeup of NBCU’s senior executive ranks. Bonnie Hammer, the NBCU veteran who had been overseeing all TV production, segues into the NBCU vice chairman role that was hastily vacated last month by Ron Meyer.

The shuffle in NBCUniversal’s content group comes at the same time the company is poised to bring in longtime Warner Bros. TV executive Susan Rovner as head of programming for NBC, USA Network, Bravo, E! and the rest of the entertainment outlets in NBCU’s cable portfolio, plus the fledgling Peacock streamer. Rovner has formally announced her exit from Warner Bros. TV as of Oct. 2 and is in the final stages of negotiating a deal with NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell and Mark Lazarus, NBCU’s chairman of television and streaming.

The promotion for Igbokwe

NBC Sets Premiere Dates For Tweaked Fall Schedule; Scripted Series Delayed; ‘New Amsterdam’, ‘Brooklyn’, ‘Manifest’, ‘Law & Order: Organized Crime’ Held For 2021

The peacock network is planning on returning scripted series to start rolling out in late October. NBC’s reworked fall 2020 lineup includes seven returning scripted series, that are yet to start production on their new seasons, comedy Superstore, slated to premiere Oct. 22, and five dramas scheduled for a November bow, led by flagship This Is Us, which would open its fifth season with a two-hour premiere on Nov. 10.

NBC Pushes ‘This Is Us,’ Most Scripted Series to November, Sets Unscripted-Heavy Fall Schedule

NBC Pushes ‘This Is Us,’ Most Scripted Series to November, Sets Unscripted-Heavy Fall Schedule
NBC has announced its premiere dates for the fall, which will see September and October be packed with mostly unscripted fare, while most scripted originals have been pushed.

The majority of the network’s big scripted shows, including “This Is Us,” its three “Chicago” dramas and “Law & Order: Svu” have been shunted back to November premiere dates due to Covid-19 production complications.

However, there are quite a few shows missing from the network’s previous fall schedule announcement back in June. New “Law & Order” spinoff “Law & Order: Organized Crime” is nowhere to be found, and NBC is now saying it will not premiere until 2021, when it will be joined by fellow scripted newcomers “Kenan,” and “Mr. Mayor.”

Several other returning shows, including “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “Good Girls,” “Making It,” “Manifest,” “New Amsterdam” and “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” will be back towards the beginning of next year, according to sources.
