From a playful passion to the serious pro.
Reno-Rangan4 July 2017
One of the recent Disney Channel Original Movie starring Dave Cameron. Surely I decided to watch it after seeing her in 'Descendants'. An okay film. There's nothing special in the story. It was the same old, same old sports film. Like, a girl who loves snowboarding loses her spot in the team and the boyfriend at the same time. Now she trains hard to prove them all wrong. Would she achieve successfully what she has undertaken is the remaining part of the story that ends with a major snowboarding competition.

As usual, a good film for the television audience and particularly the kids. It is a kind of inspiration, but full of predictable. At least I have learnt a few stuff about snowboarding, yet I felt it should have done a lot more with that platform. The other sub-plot like dogs were not bad. So overall the narration looked decent, until the end. If someone says the film is bad, that could be because of the way it was concluded. Too plain, but it always works for a production like Disney's. You can watch it, though, remember there are many fine DCOM that you can try than this.

Dangerous downward descent
bkoganbing20 January 2014
Dove Cameron of Liv&Maddie and Luke Benward recently an interest of Bridgit Mendler on Good Luck Charlie team up for this latest Disney feature film Cloud 9. No this is not about literal heavenly heights, but it might as well be for it is an especially grueling challenge for snowboarders. In fact we see that one can't even walk up to it, one has to be airlifted before one makes the dangerous downward descent.

The story casts Cameron as the daughter of the owner of a ski resort and that gives her access to a team sponsored by winter sports business owner whose son Mike Manning is the snowboarding current star. But when the resort drops the team, Manning drops Cameron and the team does as well. Seems she's not as good as she thinks she is, but was there for politics.

Two blows to her ego really leave her down in the dumps. But fortunately there's Benward who was an up and coming snowboarder, but who wipes out on national television and that's left him lacking a bit of confidence.

This was a good one from the Magic Kingdom and it was a nice story seeing how these two wounded young people help each other out with their sport and their lives. I also commend Amy Farrington playing Benward's mother who runs a local kennel. Who'd have thought that dogs would be therapeutic?

Some nice scenes of snowboarding also highlight this Disney Channel film. Definitely one of their better products.

Decent

Cloud 9 is one of those forgotten movies. It had potential but fell flat. It's missing some key elements that make me fall in love with Disney movies. The acting was pretty good and story was interesting. I thought the snowboarding would be boring but it wasn't. And I enjoyed the chemistry between Dove Cameron and Luke Benward. They had a great kiss scene. The only thing I didn't like was how they barely showed Luke's character snowboard. He went through a traumatic thing and they just glossed over it. Also, I liked the main song until it got to the chorus, and now it's still stuck in my head.

Predictable but delightful DCOM
je_and_la17 February 2014
Once again the Disney Channel has provided us with a typical story of self-discovery, laced with conflict and the formation of new friendships. In this story we meet Kayla Morgan (Dove Cameron), a pampered snowboarder whose Father owns the ski-lodge where she snowboards. Also heading the cast is Will Cloud (Luke Benward), a snowboarder turned dog groomer after a particularly memorable fall during his failed attempt at the coveted Cloud 9. When it is revealed to Kayla that she only won a place on the snowboarding team as a result of her Father owning the resort, she turns to Will to learn the Cloud 9 to prove to everyone that she truly is the best female snowboarder around.

Both Cameron and Benward delivered good performances throughout the film, though there were times when their chemistry together was not very believable. The entire cast, including Mike C. Manning (Nick Swift), Amy Farrington (Andrea Cloud) and Jeffrey Nordling (Sebastian Swift) brought this story to life in a very believable and enjoyable manner. It is a shame that Kiersey Clemons (Skye Sailor) did not have a more prominent role in the film as her acting was very enjoyable to watch. Praise must be given to the stunt coordinator Kathy Jarvis and to the stunt doubles who did an incredible job with the snowboarding scenes. My eyes were glued to the screen, anxious to see whether they would land their jumps or not, and I found myself breathing a sigh of relief when they did.

The story itself progressed at a reasonable pace despite its predictability. There never seemed to be a time where the story was lacking or where the pace of the film was too fast. Two big thumbs up to the screenwriters Don D. Scott, Justin Ware and Katie Wech for penning such a captivating film.

Utah, USA is a beautiful place and that beauty was reflected in this film. The scenery in Cloud 9 was incredible and was a perfect back-drop for a film centered on snowboarding.

The ending let this film down in as much as it was disappointing and relatively anti-climatic. The film itself was very enjoyable to watch and I found myself waiting anxiously to see what the final outcome would be, and though the film was very predictable, I found myself disappointed with how it ended.

All in all this was a very enjoyable, although predictable, Disney Channel Original Film, and is deserving of the 7/10 rating given.

A bad movie that I can't help but enjoy
hall-paige-a25 April 2021
From a purely logical stand point this was not a good movie. Script was cheesy and predictable, there were lots of cliches, poor acting, and things that just didn't make sense or we're not realistic.

That being said, from an emotional standpoint, I can't help but really enjoy this movie. Yes, it's clichéd but sometimes that's enjoyable, and the premise was fun. I think Luke Benward actually did a fantastic job, he was the only one who seemed natural and like he wasn't reading from a script (I don't hold Dove Cameron accountable for the bad performance, I'm sure she was directed to act so over the top). And there were just enough scenes with actual heart that I could get past the scenes that made me want to roll my eyes. At the end of the day, it's a Disney Channel movie, so you can just have fun with it!

The movie is a topical Disney. It just adds sport, that doesn't make the movie bad but it very predictable. You see everything coming from the beginning, if your looking for something new and different then it only meets half the requirements. Once again though the movie is very good and the snowboarding is also good.

Beautiful scenery, Predictable Story
gccates17 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Okay so how many times have we seen the story of the blonde pampered princess who sets out to show us she has some depth and learns a lesson. Of course there is the non rich boy next door type guy for her to fall in love with who teaches her a little bit about humility. Dove Cameron is the latest girl Disney is determined to make their new "it girl". While cute and adorable enough on Liv and Maddie she falls flat in Cloud Nine. Not completely fault the script of this predictable tale is flat.

Other tropes included the overbearing asshole father, the jerk boyfriend, the mean girl out to take the main girl's spot.

Dove Cameron and Luke Benward turned in vanilla at best performances. Typical Disney sitcom style acting. Most of their scenes just felt like they were reading their lines straight from the script.

Mike C Manning was pretty cringe worthy when it came time for Nick's "big reveal". As if we didn't realize when it happened that he clearly steered her into the sign on purpose. Nick's father was a mustache twirling villain. I can't even hold their acting in this movie against them with those flat characters.

Kiersey Clemon's was in this movie simply to make faces at our main heroine.

The scenery is amazing. Kudos to the director and cinematographer. The scenes out in the snow were well done as was the scene that took place in the pool. The way that was filmed really stood out to me. Much more than the dialog.

Over all I'd rate Cloud Nine about a 4.5.

Haven't We Seen This Movie Before?
Retroman4018 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
That was the question I starting asking myself shortly into the running of the movie. Well of course we have! Still, I enjoyed the movie and think most people who are DCOM fans would like it too.

This movie follows the very successful Disney Channel Original Movie formula. The characters are as predictable as the ending. But seriously, this is a DCOM and the hero will always prevail at the end.

One thing Disney seems to have is a never ending group of fine young actors that they are constantly testing to find their "next big star". I really like a lot of the current crop including Dove Cameron and Luke Benward (although my current favorite is Olivia Holt who could have played the role if they didn't have her in multiple shows already). Dove Cameron reminds me a little of Reese Witherspoon in the Legally Blonde movies (which isn't a bad thing) and Luke Benward has that slightly edgy charm. Sadly there wasn't really that much chemistry between the stars; it was more like they were tolerating each other on screen.

The story had potential to be better, but there was minimal character development. Since you knew how it was going to end, you didn't really get to feel what the characters were going through. Even at the final showdown everything was totally predictable. But so what? It is a DCOM.

In spite of the shortcomings I genuinely enjoyed the movie. The action scenes are very well filmed and the scenery in Utah was beautiful. The stunt team was outstanding for sure. The movie doesn't get bogged down anywhere and the story keeps moving. Yes, the ending is cliché but did you honestly expect different?

I'm sure the timing of this movie had something to do with the Olympics since snowboarding doesn't get a lot of mainstream coverage except in Olympic years.

Set the DVR and enjoy a fast paced breezy movie that doesn't require much thought.

Worst Snowboarding Movie Ever
keonearielfay22 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm terribly sorry, but this is the worst possible sports movie ever. if you were to know anything about snowboarding, you would know that most scenes in this movie are just hands down stupid. as someone who has been snowboarding for six years, the actual snowboarding does not make any sense. along with the fact that the main character went down a mountain without an avalanche pack (a backpack the inflates when snow has touches it so you can float above the snow) and almost dies, which she should have died since she has daddy's money but can't afford to get basic backcountry gear. disney just had to ruin another sport. again, sorry, but this movie just ain't the move.

Teenagers, social differences, a competition, romance, few real seductive scenes and the expected end. A Disney film with all the familiar ingredients. And, sure, with young actors giving a not realistic but nice portrait of a special age. So, simplistic but far to be boring. Or bad.

Warning: Spoilers
Will's mom is blown away at the makeover once it was finished. She notes that Will and Kayla made a great team and gave them the day off to relax and have fun. While Will is preoccupied, she thanks Kayla for bringing back "the old Will." After getting fro-yo, Kayla notices Tyson's Peak and comments on its scary appearance. Will says that it is and Kayla wonders if anyone ever snowboarded down the mountain. Will then tells Kayla the story of Tyson's Peak: how Tyson attempted to ride the mountain but his body was never found. Will concludes that riding down the mountain is impossible, while Kayla argues that nothing is impossible. Kayla asks what their chances of winning Fire and Ice were, and Will tells her that although it was shaky, they are starting to look like a real threat. Kayla ventures even further, voicing her thoughts that Will should join their team. Taking note of how unsure he looked, she makes him promise to at least think about it. Later, Kayla and Will view the viral video apart, but couldn't stand watching it. The next morning, Kayla hears that her mother talked to Will's mom about her input at the kennel and her determination to become better at snowboarding, thus enlisting Will. She then hears her dad's comment that he doesn't want to see her fail and she had no chance against the Swifts. Sadly, she reminds herself that nothing is impossible.

Later, Kayla asks Will to teach her the Cloud 9, but they argue when Will says she is not ready. Will used the mountain as an example, saying you could have no fear going down it. He ventures to say that Kayla was not yet at that point. Determined to prove a point, Kayla takes a helicopter ride to the top of the peak and bravely snowboards down the mountain, unaware that she is being recorded on TV from the helicopter. But on the way down, she falls off a drop, with the snow ledge, which causes an avalanche, which buries her under the snow pack. Will and Donald run to find her and eventually rescue her. Kayla admits that she boarded down the peak just to impress Will, so he would be willing to teach her the Cloud 9.

In school, Kayla finds out that Skye is already Nick's girlfriend, and she makes Will hold her hand to even up the score. Later, Dink and Sam learn that Will has joined the team. After, a few test runs after his long year off, Will stumbles and falls. He purposely pretends to be unconscious and scares them. The Swift team saw him snowboarding and when he took the fall, Nick says 'once an epic failure, always an epic failure.' Will finally agrees to teach Kayla the Cloud 9 and shows Kayla how to do the first part. While she attempts the Cloud 9, Nick and Skye sees. Nick seemed sympathetic when she fell and Skye notices. After a few failed attempts at the Cloud 9, Kayla leaves to refuel. Nick arrives and tells Will there's a strong chance Kayla will be injured doing the Cloud 9 just as Will was, and it would be Will's fault. Afterwards, Kayla made a few more attempts. Now into the night, Skye was watching her when Sebastian sees her attempts. Panicked, he asked Skye what she was doing and Skye said the Cloud 9. He didn't believe that she could pull it off but Skye counters him, saying not to count her out. Mad, he accused Skye that she told him she could beat her. Skye countered commenting that he lied because he had said she was a pampered princess with no talent. She went on how much better Kayla's doing, saying "That girl can ride". When Kayla wants to do another attempt, Will says she was hesitating and that he can't risk it her getting hurt. He accused her that it is really about winning Nick back. Kayla says she has had enough with people who don't believe in her. Will comes up and kisses her and he leaves. When Kayla heads home, Sebastian comes up and tells her that he wants her back on the team and she says yes, just because he saw her as a new improved weapon for the Swifts.

At the Fire and Ice competition, Kayla arrives wearing a Swift Jacket, making the Hot Doggers (Kayla's team) think she gave up on them. Kayla reveals she was only pulling a trick and was only wearing it to return the equipment she was instructed to give back earlier, saying that teal was "so last season", making it clear that she has officially dumped the Swift team for what they did, and the Hot Doggers was where she belonged, despite warnings of regret from Sebastian. When Fire and Ice begins, Will starts out very well, with Nick close behind. In Run 2, Nick starts to show power and wins the Men's title, making Kayla the only chance the Hot Doggers have left against the Swift team. Kayla

Innocuous
jfgibson7323 November 2021
Here's a harmless little Disney TV movie about two snowboarding teens who need each others' help. The first act sets things up well--you can't help but be upset at how unfairly Kayla is treated. On the other hand, I think we aren't given as good a reason to empathize with the other main character, Will. He had a bad experience, so he gave up snowboarding, but he is stuck in this tiny community that revolves around the sport. It's a very predictable story, but I think most viewers who seek it out won't mind that. Enjoyable family film.

A snowboarder Kayla Morgan (Dove Cameron), the best girl shredder in Summit Valley, Seattle, competes in a snowboarding challenge and wins for the girls' division. With her Swift snowboarding teammate/boyfriend, Nick Swift (Mike Manning), who is also the son of team coach Sebastian Swift (Jeffrey Nordling), she trains as a part of the Swift Team to win the "Fire and Ice" snowboarding competition. A year ago, a viral video branding the famous, legendary snowboarder Will Cloud (Luke Benward) as an "epic failure" caused Will to end his snowboarding career. He wiped out attempting a move he created in Fire and Ice, called the Cloud 9, and almost died, allowing the Swifts to take the win. Now, Will works at his family's dog-kennel with his mom, Andrea (Amy Farrington). During a prey-Fire and Ice party for the Swifts, Sebastian Swift tells Nick that he needs to do whatever it takes to win Fire and Ice. After the party, Kayla, Nick, and other their two other teammates find Will's sled that he left behind while taking a customer's dog for a walk. Kayla and Nick get on and ride the sled, however, Nick is unable to control it and apologizes to Kayla before falling out of the sled. Still riding, Kayla crashes into the mountain lodge sign, demolishing it and breaking the sled in the process. A security guard finds her and takes her home, and Kayla was abandoned by her teammates to take the blame. Will was informed that his sled was broken.

Her parents, Richard (Patrick Fabian) and Madeline, tell Kayla and Will that they will fix the sign, but Kayla has to work at the dog-kennel every day after school to pay for Will's sled unless she told them who else was there at the incident. She refuses, and she and Will argue about her presence at the kennel. In the midst of their talk, Will blatantly tells Kayla that even though she had won many medals, her board technique was rusty and she was only on the Swift team because her dad owned the resort and supplied the team with money.

After school, Kayla hurries into the kennel, hoping not to be spotted. While Will took a dog for a walk, Kayla fills the dogs' food bowls. She receives a message from Sebastian that she is kicked off the team because of her misconduct. Furious, she marches up to Nick and they have a serious discussion. He and the others knew about her dismissal from the team but wouldn't do anything about it. When Kayla presses further, Nick comes straight out with the truth he's been trying to avoid and explains that she can't win Fire and Ice, due to her faulty riding. She and her father argue about how he doesn't think Kayla's good enough to try to reach for the stars.

The next day, Kayla is seen mopping the floor and arrived at the kennel earlier than Will. When Will arrives, he is with his friends, Dink (Carlon Jeffery) and Sam (Andrew Caldwell). Sam had taken a nasty fall attempting a snowboarding move, and Will lectures Sam about following the exercises he recommended for him and figures out where Sam went wrong. Kayla realizes that Will truly does know what he is doing. Later, Will and his friends leave for some pizza, leaving Kayla in charge. After she locks one of the dogs, Donald, in his cage, Kayla gives another, Buford, a bath. Donald mischievously unlocks the cage and lets the other dogs out. She discovers their escape and chases them through town. Later, she talks to Nick again, and he decides it that they should break-up, thinking she is a distracting him from the competition. When Kayla returns to the kennel with the dogs, she pleads to be fired, but Andrea refuses. Back at home, her friends try to comfort her and bring themselves to watch the viral video and see how Will got injured.

Kayla asks Will to train her for Fire and Ice so she can really know snowboarding and work on her technique. She also offers to remodel the kennel to bring in more customers. Will denies that he still loves snowboarding and refuses to coach her. Infuriated, Kayla keeps trying to talk reason into him. He blatantly replies that she did not have a team to compete with, and so there would be no point in teaching her anyways. Kayla sees his old teammates and decided that they could be a team together. Kayla then notices the really famous shredder, Skye Sailor (Kiersey Clemons), and realizes the Swifts have replaced her with Skye. She tries to reason with Will again, telling him not only the Swifts replaced her, but they beat Will too and he hasn't snowboarded since. Will then agrees to train them.

At school, she tells her friends that Will will coach her and introduces them to Sam and Dink. She sees Nick and is incredulous when he silently 'what-upped' her. Spotting Skye, she points her out to her friends, who comfort her by reminding Kayla that Skye was wearing double studs, which was "so last season." Later, Skye spots Kayla and offers to give her an autograph. Realizing this was the girl she replaced, she decided to make the autograph to 'Kayla, Everyone's favorite Daddy's girl.' Angrily, Kayla remarks that she will be the winner of Fire and Ice. Will frustrated tells Kayla that she has to prove that, and they started serious training. Kayla isn't doing great at the start, but she is later shown steadily improving and also working on the makeover for the dog care. At one point, Nick sees Kayla and Will together and he doesn't seem happy about it.

A great sports movie
mischievouslyradiant23 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I've only seen a few movies that is centered around a sport, and I really love Cloud 9. Who cares if it's cliché or similar to those other movies? It's a fresh, new take on a similar idea...for me, I don't even notice it, unless I'm thinking about it rather than enjoying it and letting the movie entertain me. What is wrong with you, people? You should just steer away from entertainment as a whole, if you're just going to observe all the similarities and details and criticize it!

Anyway, this is one of the best sports movie I've ever seen. I grew up with The Cutting Edge (1992), I used to watch Go Figure (a Disney movie, like Cloud 9), and my Dad introduced me to Ice Castles (the first movie and its recent remake) a few years ago. All centered around figure skating, as that's the sport I grew up with. This is the only snowboarding movie I've ever seen. I think Disney should do more movies like this :) They should do a sequel to this, really.

This is just me, but I did get offended with Will at first. Appearances are important to girls, very important for some. Nothing wrong with wanting to look good, and I don't think Kayla was overboard with it. Her attitude just seemed to make it appear as if she was going overboard with it, since she grew up spoiled.

I love it when they become friendly, and Kayla's so sweet when she becomes friends with the dog. The snowboarding scenes were awesome, although some people who do snowboard might get offended at the average-ness of it.

I give this a 10/10 rating! It kept me viewing throughout, and I can't believe I didn't see it sooner.

Couldn't stand the bulgy lips on her
thenekassyni28 October 2015
Typical Disney movie trying to bank and promote an upcoming child star. As with all Disney stuff this is meant for the rich people out there. You have the nice clothes and settings. The movie was alright for what is it and again being a Disney movie after all. I have to say the production value appears to be above average though.

I didn't even get through the movie as every scene with Dove shows off her bright red and puffy lips. Now I find some people like this and I guess it is done to sexualize her but did we have to make it so big? If you google her and look at the photos she doesn't have the puffy lips. The problem with this is, of course, whenever she talks it appears unnatural. To me, it is gross. The close up gives me shivers. Reminds me of that one girl in the Transformers movie that had such a bad pair of puffy lips I cringed everything she was on screen.

It's the typical story with the pampered rich girl who wants to change so others will see her as someone other than a fake.
fuwebfiewo18 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Honestly, I liked this movie a lot. I mean, yeah, it was really predictable and I expected everything that I saw (Nick steering Kayla into the sign), but I have to admit, the movie was really good. When I first saw the trailer during the Disney commercials, I already wanted to watch this movie, so I was excited when it came out yesterday.

Yeah, this is a typical story with the rich girl wanting to change to show everyone she's not just "daddy's girl." However, this movie was enjoyable. The one thing I absolutely cannot stand about this movie was the ending. I was on the edge during the Fire and Ice competition, even though I already knew that Kayla would do Cloud 9 and the Hot Doggers would win. Still, I was excited and ignored the fact that I already knew what would happen. So why did I not enjoy this movie? It's because the ending was absolutely horrible.

Okay, fine. It was ABSOLUTELY horrible, but I really dislike it. I don't like it so much that I only gave this movie 8 stars. Why did I hate the ending? It sucked. The rest of the movie was good, except for the ending. They literally ended this movie RIGHT AFTER Kayla did Cloud 9 and was announced to be the winner. Such a crappy ending.

If there will be a sequel to this movie, the ending of this movie would be alright, since there's a lot they could put in the sequel, like about how Sebastian reacts to everything. But if this movie will end just like that, then I hate it. The ending really ruined this movie for me. I was literally SCREAMING at the TV when I realized the movie ended after Kayla won.

A Guily Pleasure

I can't think a better cast for this movie. Dove Cameron and Luke Benward were on fire! It's a Disney snowboarding romcom. It reminds me a little of the Chalet Girl.

In the end everyone learns a beautiful lesson in respect, forgiveness and perseverance...

Meet Kayla, an accomplished snowboarder who was kicked out of her team and forced to train with Will, a former champion snowboarder who is working as a coach after a video of him became a hit on the internet and ended his career.

If all preppy had parents like that, however, the payboys badboys usually have parents like Nick's, extremely permissive, arrogant, biased and ambitious (reminded me of the Nelsinho Piquet accident fraud)... good heart that redeems itself, the former injured athlete who overcomes himself, leads a team and trusts in his talent, and in the end everyone learns a beautiful lesson in respect, forgiveness and perseverance...

Warning: Spoilers
I think it is a great film. It's shows that 'nothing is impossible'. I think kids and teenagers could benefit from watching this film. This film shows that you need to believe in yourself and win to make you feel good, not for somebody else. Also it shows that people change. I love kayla and will together I think they make a cute couple and I love how he teaches her the cloud 9.
