Sex & Nudity

  • A boy's bare buttocks are seen slightly in the shower, however this is brief and slightly covered by steam.
  • In one scene, a girl lays on her bed in a shirt and panties.
  • A few characters have exposed cleavages, but nothing explicit.
  • Monokuma teases Naegi and Kirigiri, asking if they were planning on doing "hot, steamy, and smooch stuff tonight."
  • One of the girls, Fukawa, is completely perverted and boy-crazy. It's played up for comedy though.

Violence & Gore

  • The entire series is about a group of teens trapped in a high school, they only way they can leave is if they kill each other. Once a person is murdered, an investigation takes place and eventually a trial. If the wrong person is sentenced as the murderer, everyone will be executed while the real murderer is allowed to leave. However is the correct murderer is sentenced, they will be properly executed. This is the basis for the entire series.
  • Many characters are executed in the show, as graphic as that sounds, all of the executions are bizarre and designed like a deathtrap akin to something from "Looney Tunes". The characters do die though and although it's presented with dark humor from Monokuma (the judge/executioner/principle), the deaths are mourned and taken very seriously by other characters.
  • Lots of blood from the murder scenes and some executions, although it's shown as a hot-pink color and there is no gore. The series has a lot of dark humor involving death or pain.
  • A man is blasted off in a rocket ship, when the rocket lands and opens, it reveals the man's skeleton (albeit a very cartoonish one).

Profanity

  • There are no f words in the anime, unlike the games, which feature a lot of f words.
  • Compared to the video game, language is much less intense and frequent.
  • Mild infrequent language. Mainly "damn", "bastard", "bitch", "slut", "hell", "dick", "shit" and "bullshit" are used.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The entire series can be frightening and depressing. While the pink blood and occasional humor helps, many innocent teens are murdered so the murderer can escape. None of the teens willingly want to murder, but are basically forced to by the sadistic Monokuma.
  • The primary theme of the show is hope versus despair and as such, there are several sad scenes in the anime. But the heroes stay hopeful and remain friends despite the villain's attempts to crush that hope.
  • Several of the character's backstories are sad or emotionally intense. It's a very depressing series.
  • (Deleted. Personal opinions about suitable viewing ages are not appropriate for the Parents Guide.)

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A boy is hit in the head with a dumbbell and then hanged in a crucifix position and blood writings.
  • A girl is executed by being impaled with several spears; this is one of the more bloodier deaths.
  • A man is executed by being pummeled to death with 1,000 baseballs.
  • A man is executed by being electrified and then liquefied into literal butter. The butter is then spread on pancakes and eaten by Monokuma (the scene is meant to be dark humor).
  • A woman is executed by being burned alive and at the last possible second monokuma drives a truck into her, although this isn't shown in detail whatsoever. She looks calm and happy and doesn't even cry out.
  • A girl commits suicide by swallowing poison.
  • An artificial intelligence program is executed by having it's computer smashed to pieces. Although it's a computer personality, it's still emotional as the character behaved like a living person.
  • A boy is almost executed by a giant trash compactor, but he is saved at the last minute.
  • Junko's execution is by far the goriest, as she is crushed by a trash compactor. Pink blood splatters all across the floor, walls and ceiling.
  • One of the characters is revealed to have already been an infamous serial killer named Genocider Syo. The killer murders their victims using scissors. A few crime scene photos are shown, only slightly bloody.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A character uses a drug-like poison to commit suicide.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • One of the characters, Chihiro is revealed to have been a crossdressing boy due to the fact that he was always bullied as one but accepted as a girl. When he tells one of the boys (who he views as a role-model) his secret, the boy murders him. The murderer however, regrets it tearfully in the end and is very sorrowful before he is executed. This is one of the saddest moments in the show.
  • Another depressing moment is when Sakura, who has grown so heartbroken from seeing her friends die, commits suicide. This is a very intense scene, as many of the characters weep over the death.
