Brothers Laust and Peter enjoy bucolic life, both with a crush on flirtatious playmate Inge. The baron approves of the nationalist movement stirring war cries in parliament to fight the Germans -who can barely believe so- for Schleswig, with traumatized fat bishop MP Ditlev Gothard Monrad training to become their rhetorical leader. The baron's son Didrich flogs a gypsy after refusing to employ Ignazio's troop at least for harvest, but the baron hires them anyway. All over Denmark, young men volunteer to join the army, trusting for another victory like in 1948, encouraged by their masters, including the brothers and more of the baron's farmhands, medical approval is a given, so they start training under boasting veterans.
