S03 really is the final nail in the coffin
italoabreuu11 August 2022
If there's one thing I hate in a show is lazy writing, GOD! WHYY? Why would they spoil such a good show with an awful final season like this? So many dumb decisions and unrealistic situations! Seriously, never have I ever hated a character so much like I hate Bode right now. His stupidity really knows no bounds, which makes for an extremely frustrating experience to watch. Sadly. S01- 9, S02- 7, S03- 3 = RIP Locke and Key, the coffin has been closed, hopefully with Bode Locke(d) inside.

It's frustrating
scottsideasare26 October 2021
The show is frustrating because it is so close to excellence. But characters doing dumb things kills it. It pulls you out of the show because you can't help but laugh. Without being a spoiler, imagine two characters have to drive a car somewhere that's far away. They do what they have to do, then one character decides to do the next step alone........so he gets in the car and leaves? So how is the other person supposed to get back??

And talk about dumb protagonists? It's obvious who the antagonist is , but they can't see for an absurdly long time, and when they do? How about keep it a secret from everyone else for a while?

Just really really dumb writing. Too bad because the premise is great.

I want more, but better storylines
aan_ke14 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I feel this has so much potential, that beautiful house, those magic keys... but I want to know the story behind it, what about the Locke ancestor, did he know more? I was drawn to it to bingewatch, but some of the scenes are really boring and "too easy" and I felt annoyed about some of the kids' decisions... I'm kinda hoping for a season 2, but hopefully written by better storywriters.

Halfway through S1 and all of S2, you will groan, "You idiot!", often in each episode
rsvp32110 December 2021
If you want to watch a somewhat similar series that has zero frustration for the audience, I suggest The Lost Room (2006) - still holds an 8.2 rate here at IMDb.

I was impressed by the general plot of this one, and it started off fairly promising, but extremely poor writers squandered a chance of legendary.

Instead, this progressed into a low, nonsensical "background noise while multitasking " level of entertainment.

What a shame.

So glad I watched before I read the reviews
renee_tosev28 February 2020
The thing I find ridiculous about all of these reviews is that the people writing them and their main bone of contention is that the characters keep making decisions and doing things they don't expect... if they DID people would complain that the characters are sooooo predictable though.

This show woke my tired, dusty old imagination up again. It is so visually beautiful and the story so original that any character flaws and plot holes are easily overlooked for me.

Sometimes they (the characters) aren't very likeable and sometimes the actors seem to clang against each other at different frequencies and sometimes they don't meet up at all so a scene falls short due to the delivery, but overall I love this show so much and can't wait for a season 2

Good but could've been better if it had stayed more true to source material
monikasharma-366307 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This show is based on the comic book series of the same name by joe hill which was quite popular, it's a story of a family which moves to their ancestral home after the father dies, soon they find out about the various secrets and mysteries that the house has been keeping for centuries, truly speaking i was a little disappointed since they made it a pg 13 rated series whereas the comic had gruesome violence, but maybe netflix decided to make it more family friendly cause kids with magical keys may not appeal to the older audience, the casting is great and the actors do justice to their roles, although sometimes inconsistent and slow it captures enough detail from the source material to keep viewers engaged, netflix did a fine job with this series

It has quite a cool concept but the execution wasn't the best.
Imme-van-Gorp10 March 2023
Season One: 6.5/10

Themes: Fantasy, Mystery, Drama, Horror, Magic, Paranormal, Family, High School, Murder, Relationships & Grief.

Review: The concept of this show is interesting and fun, but for me the execution felt lacking. The pacing was very slow, and something about it felt off. Maybe it was the acting or the dialogue, but I couldn't help but think it was a lot more cringey than it needed to be. Some of the world-building was decent and cool, but I once again think it could have been done even better. The plot was okay, but some of the decision-making skills of the main characters were painfully stupid.

Beautiful, magical adventure series
robfollower3 March 2020
A bit Narnia, a bit Goonies, a bit Inkheart with a smattering of Stranger Things. Enjoyable first season and nicely lays down the foundations for an even better second season. Ignore most of the negative reviews as most are moaning for the sake of moaning. There are potholes and inconsistencies but hey isn't there in even the most polished of films and TV series ? If they didn't enjoy it then why watch it to the very end ? Great concept well worth viewing.

There is potential there
carbball10 February 2020
I love the idea of the story but man does it take along time to get there. All the high school drama was use less and really off putting. In the first few episodes the time spent on the keys is like 5% of what's happening and I honestly wanted to skip ahead. I like the idea of the story and that's the only thing that kept my interested to finish the series. Here's hoping season two is better.

Much Improved
jcb-1821220 November 2021
The first season was good but the second really steps it up a notch. More tension, you feel more invested in the characters and it doesn't wimp out on the negative side of the magic.

At episode 8 and already looking forward to third season.

dumb decisions
tarkancengel8 August 2022
The series really has potential and captivates its viewers, but so many stupid decisions are made throughout the series that as a viewer, it's hard not to get annoyed.

Somehow, I have the feeling that the main characters don't have any desire for the power of what they have in their hands. Without spoiling now, for example, if you as Locke can't lose the key, why would you just give it to a stranger? Then, of course, the key gets stolen and everyone wonders. The bad guy also leaves the key behind (even though he is so smart)? What kind of plot is that? This series deserves at most 6-7 points.

its ok, i enjoyed it
jay63225 September 2022
Its ok, i enjoyed it, just gotta throw logic out the window. With so many keys doing so many different things. You are always thinking, why they didn't use this key or that key. Why isn't the character doing this or that. Why isn't the villian eliminating that person. But just enjoy it for what it is.

Most eps leave with a cliff hanger so you are excited to see the next ep.

Acting was ok, most of them are young adults or kids, you you can't be expecting oscar contending acting here.

The special effects are enough that it doesn't look cheesy. I binged watch all 3 seasons when they came out, but it looks like that's the end of the story.

teenage dramas and ultimately dumb kids
kellindil-759-44882814 November 2021
Story could be good but it's filled with whole episodes of teen romance, everyone is acting like their iq is 30 and do dumb things all the time which makes whole series ridiculous.

Went from watchable to dumpster fire by Episode 7.
dwuudz-3577513 February 2020
It's gonna seem great until the 7th episode, when you get front row tickets to witness a group of writers throw their own careers into the garbage.

It seriously feels like they were trying to speed-run the feeling disappointment that was Game of Thrones season 8.

What Happened?
gab-6759925 October 2021
After finishing season 2 I cannot help it to say someone dropped the ball. Yes there was magic but not as much as there was in season 1! Pt 2 felt like a history lesson into Matheson but a boring one. I still love the show but if season 3 does not come big then this show was a waste of time... I like graphic novels but have yet to read the ones based on this show. I only saw the show and was hooked. I love Gabe and Scot.

Why? Why?
muzaffer-topdagi8 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So you find a magical music box that used with a key enables you to command anyone like a puppet at will, and you have a gunman in your house would you use that box to command the gunman to put the friggin gun down, or even better shoot himself in the head????????

Apparently, not according to netflix writers. According to them, you would use that powerful music box to puppeteer some random bully idiot girl in a student mess hall, you would THINK TO DO THAT... but disarming a gunguy about to kill your mom? .. naaa ... you would just look at him mean and angry while he is ziplocking you to a chair.

That's the ultimate stoopid nflix. Stoooooooopid.

Please remove season 3
mr_thewizard22 August 2022
Season 1 and 2 were good. Apart from the acting because it wasn't much noticeable. Also, the story was different and I didn't see that kind before, which made it unique so my rating was 8.

Going into season 3. Who taught them how to act? Who is that director? Who is the writer?

Seriously some events are just bad. A woman is screaming while they are in the next room and didn't hear the scream. They are just standing smiling at each other. That's a very small example, and you can see a lot of that. Some acting is just very bad in reactions. Weird reactions in some events which is illogical.

Great concept
urbanspider9 February 2020
This show is pretty good actually, the concept is original and reminds me of some dreams I've had in the past, that is hidden keys opening hidden doors n stuff. The acting and directing is ok-ish, feels a bit low budget at times, but it gets better as the episodes progress. Worth watching.

Season 1 good Season 2 bad
atultripathiofficial6 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Season 2 didn't touch the level of 1 at any point. Poor acting from most of the characters. Image of dodge completely ruined by Gabe. The only good actors were Duncan and the kid. Disgusted by some of the actors specially Gabe by his smirk. I understand you have to make a character evil but there are other ways to do it. It was a complete turn off throughout Season 2.

So in short Season 1 => 8 star Season 2 => 4 star.

A good supernatural drama
Tweekums11 July 2021
This Netflix series is centred on the Locke family. Mother Nina and her children Tyler, Kinsey and Bode move to the family home, Keyhouse, in Massachusetts after father Rendell is murdered. Keyhouse is a massive colonial era mansion where supernatural occurrences are rumoured to occur. One day Bode hears a voice coming from the well; it tells him that the house contains a number of magical keys; each with a different power. He soon finds one which lets the use pass through a door and exit through any other they think of... unfortunately for Bode the 'Well Lady' tricks him and takes it from him. She is after a particular key; Bode, with the help of his siblings will have to try to get it first. Along the way they will find more keys; some useful, others dangerous but always magical.

I know there are a lot of negative reviews but I really enjoyed this series. The set-up is dealt with quickly and efficiently then the adventure starts. It nicely mixes the magical with the mundane as the children must deal with ordinary life in a new town while also having a supernatural adventure. It was exciting each time a new key was discovered as one never knows what it will do... although the shape of the key gives a clue. While there is nothing too scary going on there are plenty of good scares and tense scenes. The setting is atmospheric; especially Keyhouse with its gothic look and myriad rooms. I thought the cast did an impressive job bringing their characters to life. Some reviewers complain of plot holes but I didn't really see this; yes characters sometimes make silly decisions but then so do people in real life... and sometimes it needs to be this way to keep the story going. Overall I'd certainly recommend this series; I'm certainly looking forward to the second season.

Wrong focus
toddcha8 February 2020
If this series is about magic then 1/10 in one episode is about magic. The rest is either their school life which is exceptionally irrelevant or their boring interactions. Especially the mom, I gotta say even the teens act better than she. Their old story with the weird guy is So typical of Netflix. Well, ask yourself what you will do if tou have these magic items. Then you will know how illogical the series is.

Update: in a series of 10, e7 should accumulate the tension caused by the keys. After multiple use of the keys they should know how to use the keys. The keys should become handy or helpful when the family was in emergency. However the kids just are surprisingly naive and not smart. I am not sure if the screenwriter on propose made the family that way but in reality I don't think poeple should be that weak. That's how and why the series is hard to achieve a real intensive peak/climax that punches right on audience's heart.

First season great
markinsac26 September 2022
Just binged all three seasons. I really liked the first season. Second was okay. Third wasn't very good. But combined I'd still rate the series as entertaining and well done. Yeh yeh yeh, they didn't seem to make the best decisions in planning their battle strategies. I agree with the comments here on that. They have some great tools available but kind of don't choose to use them or do something dumb. Plus the resolutions of some of their predicaments seemed a bit too far fetched. And the villains got a little silly as the series went on. Not like they were making the most strategic decisions, either. But it's a fantasy show. Just enjoy it.

The intensity was lacking, acting and scenarios/decisions were disappointing, and the conclusion was a letdown
kevin_robbins22 May 2021
We finished this over the weekend finally. I actually collected these graphic novels years ago. Overall, I loved the concept of the series - the fantasy elements and premise were wonderfully delivered. The settings felt authentic and the magic kept you tied to every episode. I also loved the Tom Savini reference and the Joe Hill cameo. However, the intensity was lacking, acting and scenarios/decisions were disappointing, and the conclusion was a letdown. I'd give it a 6/10.

Fascinating concept, horrible execution.
JabezGill25 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The concept of the Keys is incredibly unique and interesting but that's where the positives really stop about this show.

Scripts are poor, acting is largely average, and this show seems lost between "Netflix level tv-show suspenseful/thriller/drama" and "CW teen drama in the vein of Pretty Little Liars & Vampire Diaries"

There are times that hint at a Stranger Things Season 1/ Haunting of Hill house quality of show geared at adults where things are darker, more serious, more creepy, and more well thought out..

However, the show is uneven and throws elements (which appear less and less as the show wears on) are negated by the CW level teen romance and drama storylines.

It's frustrating, because it is easy to see how epic this show could have been - instead it feels generic and bland.

Could've been something special - after finishing seasons 1 & 2 I see now why Hulu passed on this show.

More talented lead actors, along with some deeper and more complex storylines would have made this something special. Either be a spiderwick chronicles kid's show that isn't too dangerous or frightening... or be a horror/mystery show geared at a wider surfin cr. You can't do both.

Acting bright spots were: "Dodge" - whose character was misused a few times in season 1 and wasted in season 2, Eden who play a great mean girl & mean girl gone demonic mean girl, and Jackie who plays the "sweet, innocent, girl next door" stereotype well - but is also underutilized.
