During an interview last week, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) confirmed that his work on the film The Life of Chuck – the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – was complete. Flanagan has since taken to social media to confirm that filming has wrapped completely… and to let us know that The Life of Chuck is not a horror movie. Which makes sense, since we’ve previously heard that the movie will be similar in tone to the likes of Stand By Me, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Green Mile (and Hiddleston himself compared it to The Shawshank Redemption).

Sure as the Pizza Planet truck will show up in every Pixar movie (except "The Incredibles" for some reason), the Lasser Glass can always be found somewhere in Mike Flanagan's horror movies and TV shows. This ornate, evil mirror hails from the very beginning of Flanagan's career -- a short film called "Oculus: Chapter 3 - The Man with the Plan," made in 2005 -- and the filmmaker has brought it with him ever since. Either that ... or it's been following him.
As you might expect, the Lasser Glass makes another appearance in Flanagan's new Netflix series, "The Fall of the House of Usher." An adaptation of various works by Edgar Allan Poe, the eight-episode series reimagines the doomed Usher family as pharmaceutical magnates in the vein of the real-life Sackler family. The Ushers have played a major role in creating America's opioid crisis, but have escaped justice thanks to a...

Plot: In this wicked series based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, ruthless siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege and power. But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth.
Review: Since the premiere of Before I Wake and Hush on Netflix in 2016, Mike Flanagan has called the streaming platform his creative home. But, it was not until The Haunting of Hill House that Flanagan became a recognizable name to the masses. Ever since audiences ran screaming from the premiere of the Lumière brothers’ 1895 short Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, the histories of filmgoing and horror have been inextricably intertwined. Through the decades—and subsequent crazes for color and sound, stereoscopy and anamorphosis—since that train threatened to barrel into the front row, there’s never been a time when audiences didn’t clamor for the palpating fingers of fear.
Into the new millennium, horror films have retained their power to shock and outrage by continuing to plumb our deepest primordial terrors and incarnate our sickest, most socially unpalatable fantasies. They are, in what amounts to a particularly delicious irony, a “safe space” in which we can explore these otherwise unfathomable facets of our true selves, while yet consoling ourselves with the knowledge that “it’s only a movie.”

The Ouija board, and that’s weejee board not weeja board with all due respect to Joe Bob Briggs, has been a constant source of fascination since it’s inception in 1890. Ghostly movements and other supernatural appearances went back further than that and there were crude inceptions before 1890 but that’s when the board as we know it came about. It was commercialized sometime later and of course; it’s showed up as a device in horror movies ever since. The Witchboard series that started in 1986 is probably the most popular series that features the spirit communicator but another, more straightforward series called Ouija is also out there. Set about 40 years from the present day, Last Sentinel follows a platoon of four soldiers who are stranded on a military base waiting for relief. This world is now covered in water with only two land masses, who are now at war. Now three months past their duty time, the soldiers are wondering whether the relief will come at all, or if it is the enemy who will find them first.
There is plenty to enjoy about Last Sentinel. Right from the first few seconds you can see that it either has a decent budget or the small budget is used very well. I can only assume that much of it was shot at sea but even the shots where we don’t see the ocean, you really do feel like they are...

Mike Flanagan is one of the most exciting names in horror right now, but his journey to getting there was a bit stop-and-go. He got his first taste of box office success with 2013's "Oculus," the filmmaker's well-received adaptation of his own short movie, "Oculus: Chapter 3 – The Man with the Plan." After that, Flanagan helmed three horror movies in rapid succession. Of the trio, one of them went directly to Netflix (the underrated home invasion thriller "Hush"), while another one of them spent several years floundering in limbo after its U.S. distributor, Relativity Media, declared bankruptcy ("Before I Wake").
The last of these three movies was 2016's "Ouija: Origin of Evil." For those who haven't seen it, "Origin of Evil" is a much better film than its risible subtitle would suggest. It's also vastly superior to 2014's "Ouija," a flash-in-the-pan Universal/Blumhouse hit that grossed more than 20 times its...

William Sleator’s eerie dystopian 1974 YA sci-fi novel House of Stairs is getting an adaptation.
Before I Wake and Doctor Sleep actor Jacob Tremblay will star, Variety reports. Wi Ding Ho (Terrorizers) will direct.
Taking place in the near future, the dystopian genre film “follows five 16-year-old orphans who wake up to find themselves in a strange building with no walls, no ceiling, and no floor: nothing but endless flights of stairs leading in every direction, seemingly infinite. To find an exit, the five teenagers must learn to deal with the others’ disparate personalities, the lack of privacy and comfort, their clear helplessness, and a machine that only feeds them under increasingly ominous situations.”
While House of Stairs is described as an “elevated genre movie,” this setup sounds like an absolute nightmare.
Matthew McInerney-Lacombe pens the screenplay for this adaptation.
“William Sleator’s books have inspired generations of young readers.

While under control of various owners, the Fangoria brand has weaved in and out of the movie world over the decades – and the latest iteration of Fangoria launched Fangoria Studios in 2021 “to develop and produce film, television and podcasts.” Now Variety reports that Fangoria Studios is developing a live-action feature film adaptation of the manga Bloodsucking Darkness, created by Junji Ito, with The Haunting of Hill House writer Jeff Howard working on the screenplay. The Midnight Club, the latest series from genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan, is currently available to watch on the Netflix streaming service – and next up is the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired limited series The Fall of the House of Usher. Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for that one yet, but Flanagan took the opportunity to hype it up a bit during a recent interview with The Wrap… and even compared to the Giallo style!
Here’s what Flanagan had to say about The Fall of the House of Usher:
It’s crazy. It is unlike anything I’ve ever done, but in the other direction. My favorite way to describe it to people is like The Haunting of Hill House is kind of a string quartet, and The Haunting of Bly Manor is this delicate, kind of beautiful piece of classical piano music, and The Fall of the House of Usher...

Horror director Mike Flanagan has some interesting ideas about the genre. "Horror affords us the opportunity to really look at ourselves and the things that scare us... as a society and individuals," he once told The New York Times. His characters often face literal ghosts. But just as often, they confront their haunting past mistakes -- lingering memories of grief or trauma. Ahead of the release of "The Haunting of Bly Manor," Flanagan said: "I really wanted to play more with ghosts as an expression of emotional wounds... how the past and present can echo each other." These themes inform the vast majority of his work -- from his early films like "Absentia" to his later television shows. Some projects are more successful than others. However, all of them are worth a watch -- if only to see a filmmaker fine-tune his ability over time to wield the tools of...

With summer (unofficially) over and the Halloween Season now in full swing, these weekly roundups are about to get very packed with fresh new horrors both at home and in theaters!
Eight brand new horror movies are releasing in this first full week of September, and trust me when I say even that makes for a quiet week compared to what’s coming soon.
Here’s all the new horror arriving September 6 – September 11, 2022!
First up, Dread’s Tiny Cinema was just unleashed On Demand yesterday, a horror anthology of multiversal madness that’s also coming to Blu-ray on October 11 of this year.
Sit back, relax, and get uncomfortable…
From the makers of Butt Boy, Tiny Cinema is said to be “a twisted tale of seemingly unconnected strangers whose lives will change in incredible and bizarre ways forever. As reality unravels, each person must battle incredible challenges from a multiverse seeking...

Writer/director Mike Flanagan has firmly established himself as Netflix's king of thoughtful, slow-burn horror. The relationship began with Flanagan's 2016 movie "Before I Wake," and continued with his 2017 adaptation of the Stephen King novel "Gerald's Game." But things really kicked off in 2018 with the arrival of "The Haunting of Hill House," a series that was (very) loosely based on the Shirley Jackson book of the same name. This was followed by "The Haunting of Bly Manor," and Flanagan has another house-themed horror adaptation coming soon: "The Fall of the House of Usher."
But first up is "The Midnight Club," a series aimed at slightly younger audiences. It's based on the book of the same name by Christopher Pike, the author responsible for a large collection of gripping horror novels aimed at young adults. If you spent your pre-teen years reading "Goosebumps" books, there's a good chance you graduated to...

Cillian Murphy has been cast to play J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming World War II epic for Universal Pictures. Dubbed “the father of the atomic bomb,” the American physicist is the subject of “Oppenheimer,” which is Nolan’s first big studio project after parting ways with Warner Bros. Murphy previously starred for Nolan in films including “Batman Begins,” “Inception,” and Best Picture nominee “Dunkirk.” The $100-million “Oppenheimer” has meanwhile been dated for a wide theatrical release in North American theaters on Friday, July 21, 2023. Like “Dunkirk” and “The Dark Knight,” “Oppenheimer” will be shot on IMAX cameras with a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film. Production is said to begin in early 2022.
The film is written by Nolan and produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven, and Nolan himself. “Oppenheimer” is adapted from the Pultizer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer...

Universal Boss: Christopher Nolan is in a ‘Category of One’ When it Comes to Long Theatrical Windows
When Christopher Nolan broke up with Warner Bros. after a 19-year relationship with the studio, at the top of his list of demands for whatever studio would back his next film was that the movie would get a long, exclusive theatrical release. Universal obliged, signing a deal to finance and distribute Nolan’s film about the development of the atomic bomb. But the way Universal sees it, the deal is but an exception to the new rules of Hollywood.
Universal chief Donna Langley spoke publicly about the upcoming Nolan project for the first time on Thursday, at The Information’s Women in Tech, Media and Finance conference. She confirmed that the $100 million biographical drama about J. Robert Oppenheimer would be released exclusively in theaters for between 90 and 120 days.

Between booze and cigarettes, says Mike Flanagan, he’s shed a lot of addictions by this point in his life, but work isn’t one of them. “I cannot eliminate work,” the writer-director tells Den of Geek and other press over Zoom. “That is the addiction I haven’t escaped and it’s running amok in the absence of all the others.”
He’s not kidding. In the last five years, Flanagan has directed, written or co-written and edited five feature films as well as directing, co-writing and executive-producing three Netflix series with producer Trevor Macy. Oh, and they’ve already wrapped filming on Netflix series number four, The Midnight Club, and at the time of writing, are currently prepping to fly back to Vancouver to start filming on Netflix series number five. Netflix has been generous to Mike Flanagan over the last five years, and the consequence of that generosity is style dilation. Flanagan spent the early stages of his career directing movies like “Absentia,” “Oculus,” “Hush,” and “Before I Wake,” small-scale horror efforts with distinctly human hearts; he wasn’t the first filmmaker to care about his cast of victims-in-waiting, but compassion was his prize ingredient, the quality he expressed even at each movie’s peak of suspense.

As someone who has been covering Mike Flanigan’s career for over a decade now, it’s been impressive to watch his constant progression towards becoming one of the very best visual storytellers working in the realm of horror. It all began with Absentia in 2011, which led to films like Oculus, Hush, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Before I Wake and his double dose of King adaptations with Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep, and then he became one of the genre’s go-to talents for longer-form storytelling with both The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.
All of those credits alone would make for an impressive resume, but we’ve got new Flanagan on tap this week, and I say the following with zero hyperbole: Midnight Mass is hands down my favorite thing I’ve seen from Flanagan, and I believe that somehow, against all odds, this...

Although it may be difficult to believe, it's already been over three years since the passing of George A. Romero. While he left us with a legacy of films that are just as relevant (and sometimes more so) as when they were first released, there are a plethora of intriguing projects that he worked on that didn't see the light of the silver screen.

1. “The Haunting of Bly Manor”
Why Should I Watch? After racking up a horror resume filled with films like “Absentia,” “Hush,” and “Before I Wake,” Mike Flanagan’s brand of fright broke out in a big way with “The Haunting of Hill House,” a character-driven spin on haunted house stories that spread its spooky tale over 10 unnerving episodes. Netflix subscribers lit up for the eerie tale (even before Flanagan’s “Shining” sequel “Doctor Sleep” hit theaters), and now Flanagan & Co. are back with a pseudo-sequel: “The Haunting of Bly Manor” tells its own story with many of the same cast members from “Hill House” returning in new roles. Saying too much would risk spoiling the slow-burn discovery inherent to Flanagan’s storytelling, but for those wanting a framework, “Bly Manor” is loosely inspired by Henry James’ 1898 novella “The Turn of the Screw.” For more…

Mike Flanagan, director of Doctor Sleep and creator of Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House, has several spectral irons in the horror genre fire right now, notably the series, Midnight Mass. Interestingly, while Covid forced the collective industry to crawl at a snail’s pace (when not frozen altogether), it appears that production has commenced for the new series.
Utilizing the tweeted image of a title-marked clapperboard, Flanagan announced today that Midnight Mass is officially on Day 1 of production. Netflix initially ordered a seven-episode inaugural season for the series back in July 2019. While Flanagan and company had been eyeing a spring start in Vancouver before the pandemic pushed things back, it seems that an all-clear of some kind has been given, and the series is finally making progress.
