Storyline

Two-time Oscar®-winner Tom Hanks portrays Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, a timely story of kindness triumphing over cynicism, based on the true story of a real-life friendship between Fred Rogers and journalist Tom Junod. After a jaded magazine writer (Emmy winner Matthew Rhys) is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about empathy, kindness, and decency from America's most beloved neighbor.

Trivia

The title of the film is A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, whereas the lyrics for the song during the opening Mister Rogers' Neighborhood (1968) are, "It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood..." This was likely an intentional decision and not a misquote. See more »

Goofs

As is usual for a biodrama, certain events are changed for dramatic purposes. The beginning of the film states this takes place in 1998, however, several of the Mister Rogers episodes depicted being recorded were actually filmed earlier. The episode where Rogers attempted to put up a tent was filmed in 1975, and his visit to the Uptown String Quartet was filmed and aired in 1997, and the Neighborhood of Make-Believe story involving the skunk was filmed and aired in 1987.
