Doctor Who: Jo Martin becomes first Bame actor to play the Doctor

The surprise introduction of the first Doctor of colour thrills fans – but raises questions about exactly where she fits into the Whoniverse

After 56 years on our screens, Doctor Who made history on the weekend by casting the first Bame actor in the lead role, with Fugitive of the Judoon introducing Jo Martin as the Doctor.

Martin is a regular on Holby City, where she plays Max McGerry, consultant neurosurgeon and acting CEO of the hospital. She has also appeared in Fleabag, Batman Begins and first came to prominence in the early 2000s playing Natalie Crouch in the BBC One sitcom The Crouches. She posted a picture of herself in costume as the Doctor on social media after the show aired on Sunday night – having kept her new role secret for months.

Doctor Who 12×05 “Fugitive Of The Judoon” Review

The opening two-parter of Doctor Who season 12 made it very clear that this run wouldn’t simply repeat season 11’s stripped-back, ultra-accessible style. In fact, with new fans eased in across Jodie Whittaker’s first season as the Doctor, the return of the Master (in the form of Sacha Dhawan) proved that this year is all about getting them up to speed with Whovian mythology by throwing them into the deep end. Tonight’s “Fugitive of the Judoon,” however, reveals that it’s actually more like being dropped into the middle of the ocean.

From all the promotion, “Fugitive” appeared to be your average middle-of-the-season episode, with the added bonus of the comeback of the Rhino-headed Judoon. And for the first fifteen minutes or so, that’s what it was. But then John Barrowman showed up as Captain Jack Harkness and, before you know it, we were in an adventure

Aretha Franklin on Beyonce, Women’s Rights, the Future: Her Last Rolling Stone Interview

Aretha Franklin on Beyonce, Women’s Rights, the Future: Her Last Rolling Stone Interview
You were instructed to call her “Ms. Franklin.” In 2014, Aretha Franklin sat for her last extensive Rolling Stone interview to promote 2014’s Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics, her first project in years with her former Arista Records boss Clive Davis. The timing of the interview was unfortunate: it happened during the same week as the release of David Ritz’s Respect: The Life of Aretha Franklin. Ritz, Franklin’s former ghostwriter, wrote a follow-up book to her memoir sharing shocking details about Franklin’s tragic childhood and more.

Will ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ be the first show to win Best Reality-Competition Program and Host Emmys?

Will ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ be the first show to win Best Reality-Competition Program and Host Emmys?
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” is way out in front in our odds to win its first Best Reality-Competition Program Emmy and its third Best Reality Host statuette for RuPaul Charles. If this comes to fruition in September, “Drag Race” will sashay away with another honor: being the first show to win both categories.

It might sound weird that those two categories have never gone to the same show — in the same year or otherwise — before, but then you realize that these are two of the voters’ favorite races to rubber-stamp. In its 15-year existence, Best Reality-Competition Program has only gone to three shows: “The Amazing Race”, “Top Chef” (2010) and “The Voice”. Those series’ respective hosts — Phil Keoghan, Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio, and Carson Daly — have never won the corresponding category, and Daly has never even been nominated.

Fiji’s 47% Tax Rebate Is Among Highest in the World

  • Variety
Filmmakers considering a tropical paradise for their next project often look to Fiji, an archipelago of more than 330 islands that boasts some of the world’s most beautiful coasts, lush forests and remote jungle villages. In addition, the South Pacific nation, which is a major tourist destination with nonstop airline service to many major cities, offers an aggressive financial lure: a staggering 47% tax rebate.

The bar is not high to qualify for this sweet incentive. Feature film and TV productions are required to spend a minimum of 250,000 Fijian dollars, or about $188,022. The project cap is $28,000,000 Fijian dollars, or about $13.3 million.

Making things easier for producers is the fact the Fiji boasts one of most developed economies in the South Pacific, with good infrastructure. English is the one of the official languages and widely spoken.

Notable feature films that have shot in Fiji over the years include “Adrift” (2018), “Cast Away” (2000), “Contact

Primetime Emmy Awards: Every host from the 21st Century, including Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert

  • Gold Derby
Hosts for the annual Emmy Awards ceremonies throughout the 21st Century have almost always been comedians. For the most part, they bring just the right tone of roasting the nominees and celebrating the previous TV season. With a four-way rotation of ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, the host selection also typically comes from that network’s stable of talent.

For the 2018 event, “Saturday Night Live” stars and “Weekend Update” anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che will host the 70th annual ceremony for NBC. It marks the first time a duo has presided over the ceremony since Jenna Elfman and David Hyde Pierce in 1999. That was last century! How will Jost and Che stack up against this century’s emcees? Let’s take a tour of the past 18 years in our photo gallery above of all the hosts, good and bad.

‘I.T.’ Trailer: Pierce Brosnan Will Punch Your Connected Lifestyle Right in the Face
Pierce Brosnan‘s post-James Bond career is an endless source of fascination. ‘Survivor’ Review

  • Nerdly
Stars: Mila Jovovich, Dylan McDermott, Angela Basset, James D’Arcy, Robert Forster, Frances De La Tour | Written by Philip Shelby | Directed by James McTeigue

Often times in Hollywood it seems like filmmakers are either working from the same script, or are unable to see past the success of a previous film. Which is why film when a film like Olympus Has Fallen (or the very similar, and frankly better, White House Down) finds a modicum of success and popularity – enough to spawn a sequel in fact – it can have such a heavy influence on other action movies. Which leads us to Survivor.

The front of the UK DVD and Blu-ray are emblazoned with the slogan “From the makers of Olymps Has Fallen” and with good reason. This UK-set film follows the same story formula as the Gerard Butler-starrer, with and underdog government employee Kate Abbott (Mila Jovovich) pitted against

Producer Chasing Jovovich Film Pirates

After being burned on the leak and mass piracy related to "The Expendables 3" last year, producer and Nu Image/Millennium Films topper Avi Lerner is not going to let the same thing happen again.

His companies have filed a copyright infringement suit in Oregon against sixteen individuals who they claim to have pirated spy thriller "Survivor" which starred Milla Jovovich, Pierce Brosnan and Dylan McDermott. The James McTeigue-directed film opened in May in limited release and VOD.

In a complaint filed in federal court the other week, it says: "The motion picture Survivor is being wrongfully distributed on the Internet through the BitTorrent network and is now being widely pirated limiting its ability to gain access to and benefit from conventional market outlets. Plaintiff comes to court seeking relief as the motion picture Survivor has been downloaded through BitTorrent hundreds of thousands of times with over 10,000 instances of
