Post-Apocalyptic films/tv series are always my favourite ones.
catleughluke23 March 2024
This is my review on The Last Of Us; First of all, I love the show. It gets confusing at first if you're coming from a game, but cast is amazing.

Pedro Pascal is the best Joel for the show. Also, acting of Bella Ramsey stunned me, she went from badass to soft like clicks.

Cast and crew for me is top tier. Plot is amazing. Whole setup and CGI is amazing.

I haven't completed the show yet, I'm 50% in (watch full 4 and half 5th episode) but so far the show is doing a great job.

As i said it gets confusing if you're coming from a game, but so far this is by far the best show ever coming off of a game.

Games vs TV Show
daan-501888 April 2024
I played both games before watching this TV show.

Normally I was a multilayer gamer but I gave these games a go as they scored high and they didn't disappoint me.

I stopped gaming and this is the second time I'm watching it. I gotta say I like it better than the first time.

Soon after I played the games if not playing the second game simultaneous, I watched the show.

The game is that good that I compared it to the show and for the show it's hard to compete.

I had to get used to the actors, but also I knew where the story went which was less exciting. Now after months knowing what series are out there and having the storyline less in my mind, this one is a perl and deserves a a good score.

Suspensfull and Great
lornalenardlola18 February 2024
As someone who has played the last of us franchise, I was a bit skeptic about the show, but I was pleasantly suprised how good it was. It follows the plot and the structure of the game, but it still made place for its own originaliy, which I personaly liked. It gave space for supprisment and even though I had played the game, the series still managed to deliver suspense.

Although I was personaly not so glad about the perosonalities of Ellie and Joel in the series, as they are not the same as in the game. But in the end, the actors performence is still 10 out of 10, and if I am completly honest, I am still a bit glad they have their own originality and the fact that it is not exactly as the game, which I personaly belive is a reason why the series is as great as it is.

Well done for sticking to the plot of the game
gallev-3316020 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As a guy who admires the video game, played it several times and enjoyed it every single time, its hard to say I'm not biased about this. On the other hand, because I loved the game that much, it could have created a lot of negativity serrounding the series.

THANK GOD they actually took the game, and made a series based on the game nerrative and main story line.

Characters:

Joel - Probably one of my favourite characters of all time, literall masterpiece of character design, as an upcoming father, I connected even more to his story and couldn't let go of what he did for Ellie.

Ellie - I think game Ellie is much better then series Ellie, but Bella did overall good job with taking this perfect innocent young girl, and create her again in a series, which was not an easy task.

Overall what makes the last of us so great, is the fact that no one can really find hapiness in this cruel world, you can see it with Sam, with Ellie, with Joel, with each and every character that can't find pure hapiness, and even if they do for a couple of seconds, the cruel world takes them back to the sorrow of the reality they live in, as depressing as it sounds, this is where real relationships are made, Joel and Ellie's relationship is just something out of this world.

Must watch in my opinion.

Totally worth it!
tjportola9 February 2024
To start I have never played the video game this series is based in. With that being said this show got me hooked right away. The story line and how they created the whole world was done perfectly. The emotion in the acting was very believable and got me into what was going on even more.

I watched the whole first season in two nights and within seconds of the last episode ending I was on google looking when season two would be here. Can't wait to see what they bring to this world. As someone who hasn't played the game like I said it left me in a cliff hanger and honestly think that makes it better then knowing what possibly is to come.

I want Season 2 now
packersfootball-950949 April 2024
I don't even know where to begin in describing how much I loved this show. I've played The Last of Us video games a few times so I'm familiar with the story and even though the show doesn't exactly stick to the same script as the game I couldn't care less. As long as a show is good, I don't care that's it's not exactly like a book or video game or whatever. I don't get why anyone would. It's very hard to adapt a book or game into a tv show or movie. They have to change things up that don't translate well or don't have the time to get as detailed as a book or game. My only complaint is that we have to wait 2 years between seasons. I want season 2 now!

Give us more!
luxinfinity-8198314 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
As a middle aged woman, the last of my thoughts was to watch a zombie movie but then, I stumbled into this and I got instantly hooked. Every single character is unique and visibly broken, after all is a post apocalyptic movie so it makes perfect sense unlike the avalanche of cheap horror movies where they all look healthy and with their hair always in place. The atmosphere is so depressing that the pain of every single character is almost palpable. Joel and Ellie did an outstanding job in showing their fear and anger but so did the other characters. This is not a zombie story though the undead are like that due to a virulent pandemic infection. When global tragedies like that happens, the true nature of a human is revealed. At the very beginning, Joel is running away by car with his daughter and his brother, along the way they see a family of 3 with a little child desperately asking for help but Joel refuses to help them thus condemning them to certain death at night in a place crowling with infected. It may be a coincidence or fate but soon after he will have to experience the death of his own daughter. This series is a journey into rock bottom feelings yet, when you are lost in the darkness seek for the light. A masterpiece in every single aspect: thank you for giving us this. I want more!

Disappointing
inc-133-700135 April 2023
"You come at the king, you best not miss", a line from HBO's "The Wire" was what's repeating in my head while I watched this.

As a TV show in itself, It's not exactly bad. It's probably quite a bit better than usual gruel we get from streaming platforms.

But it went after a bar that's way too high for it. It follows the story of the game pretty closely, even re-enacting memorable scenes down to camera angles, such as when protagonists first saw the overtaken city and such. It changes story here and there, but often it works quite well. I don't mind Sarah being... different. I don't mind re-imagining how things went here or there. I actually quite like little flashbacks/whatever scenes about stuff that builds the story or explains the lore, but wasn't in the game. It's all good.

As long as the core premise holds. But it doesn't. I do buy Pedro Pascal, he looks like Joel, pretty much walks and talks like Joel, and feels right. But Bella Ramsey can't deliver Ellie. And it's not even her fault. Sure, she looks quite... off... and doesn't really come off or feel like a 14-year old (because she's not), but main problem is the aggressive, clueless script she's given.

Story of "Last of Us", the game that won uncountable awards, was about a strong man coping with extreme loss, and a scared girl trying to get close to him, while slowly opening up and showing she's pretty capable on her own.

Story of "Last of US", the HBO show, I'm not sure. Ellie in this one isn't a scared, suspicious, lonely girl trying to survive. Her very first scenes are full of cursing and gritting of teeth, she's a total badass with zero explanation to this, and goes more aggressive by every episode. The main theme just never comes through. Rather than someone Joel grows to love and care for as his own child, I keep wondering when he's going to dump her in the wilderness.

Or to put it simply, they tried to add girl power where none was needed (because game had more than enough), and totally overdid it, killing the main premise.

Which makes this entire show waste of time, because highly superior medium, telling that story times better, already exists.

Play the game. Skip this show.

really good
kovacsmajapanna1 January 2024
Video game adaptations often don't live up to the game itself, but in my opinion The Last of Us differs in this aspect. I do see why some people didn't like the show as much. Like I mentioned, it stays faithful to the game itself, but it still makes some changes where necessary, which in my opinion is a good thing. The characters are well done, and although some people were hating on the cast for not "looking like the character enough", i think the casting was well done, all the actors were able to portray their characters perfectly. It also gives us some more insight on the hardships of a zombie apocalypse than other similar media. Overall a very good series, can't wait for the next season!

A Riveting Apocalyptic Tale
camposcetinamauricio11 March 2024
"The Last of Us" makes its mark as a gripping adaptation of the renowned video game series, offering a fresh perspective on the apocalyptic genre. As someone unfamiliar with the games, I approached the series with curiosity, and I was pleasantly surprised by its immersive storytelling and compelling characters.

The first episode sets a high bar, immediately drawing viewers into its world and establishing an emotional connection. From the informative yet understated prologue to the brilliant opening sequences, the episode captivates with its cinematic quality and pacing.

Throughout the episode, we are introduced to a diverse cast of characters, each with their own strengths and flaws. Pedro Pascal shines as the lead, bringing a sense of familiarity and trustworthiness to his role. Meanwhile, Bella Ramsey, known for her role in Game of Thrones, delivers a performance that is less wooden and more nuanced, promising an engaging character arc.

Despite being only one episode in, "The Last of Us" shows immense potential, earning a solid rating of 9 out of 10. However, the true test lies in whether the series can maintain this standard and narrative coherence throughout its run.

The series distinguishes itself by blending elements from various apocalyptic stories, resulting in a unique and multifaceted narrative. It seamlessly transitions between action, thriller, drama, suspense, and even humor, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats.

What sets "The Last of Us" apart is its exploration of complex human emotions and ethical dilemmas in the face of catastrophe. Characters grapple with questions of morality, survival instinct, and the value of human life, blurring the lines between heroes and villains.

At its core, the series delves into the bond between Joel and Ellie, evolving into a father-daughter relationship defined by sacrifice and protection. Their journey challenges viewers to consider the lengths they would go to for the ones they love, even at the expense of humanity itself.

With its rich storytelling, dynamic characters, and thought-provoking themes, "The Last of Us" offers a profound exploration of human nature in the midst of chaos. It stands alongside acclaimed apocalyptic series like The Walking Dead and Black Mirror, earning a rating of 8.5 out of 10.

Overall, "The Last of Us" proves to be a standout addition to the genre, delivering a compelling narrative that resonates with both gamers and television enthusiasts alike. As the series continues to garner praise and accolades, it solidifies its place as a must-watch for fans of gripping storytelling and immersive world-building.

What makes us human
joannbudrys-643632 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The whingers in previous reviews, who complained about episodes that don't contribute to the plot have missed the more significant aspect of good narratives which are the thematic concerns, of their creators. Apocalyptic stories always draw attention to what makes us human and TLOU follows this trope. Bill is surviving the apocalypse in style, but when he lets a man into his home the trust he shows him enables them to build a life more meaningful than mere survival.

The main characters are on a journey that is important to the future of humanity, and despite their different fears they show courage & compassion for those who would suffer if the pandemic was to continue. Elly's character is, for me, an inspiration as she is a typical teenager in many ways but criticises the superficiality of teenage culture of the 2000's, choosing instead to "save the f...ing world". Young and old work together as Elly is supported and learns about the past from Joel & Joel begins to confront his past, that he has tried for so long to avoid. The many things that make us human are explored in this series reminding us that life is short and connection is what we need to be whole, not power.

A thrilling experience.
AgentPhoenixxx8 April 2024
The Last of Us is a zombie tv series based on a popular video game. There's no context needed, the directors did an excellent job making this for everyone.

It's very high quality with excellent cinematography and music that sets the gritty tone. From the very first scene you know exactly what you're getting and the suspense is built throughout the show masterfully. The actors brings so much life and emotion to the table with truly captivating performances.

The only major pitfall of this first season is that the third episode takes a detour and doesn't advance the plot, while it does effectively show life during the apocalypse the time could have been used better.

The Last of Us is extremely high quality and deserves all the praise it's getting. If it continues this suspense and focus on morality in the second season then it's looking like an all time great.

Great first episode
eve_dolluk16 January 2023
***" Update after watching the full series ****

Well I think overall Id give this a 7 or 8, the opening episode was definitely a 9 the rest of the show would be getting either 7 or 8s depending on how appealing they were to me.

Everything was well made, well acted, well shot etc. The brutality of it all was maintained throughout. I watched some of the game footage on you tube and there is a lot here that is identical to the game so thats a plus for fans of the game plus it works for a TV show so kudos to the game makers.

The story and overlying themes are very simple and relate to parenting and how we protect our children or the young.

It could have had more Cordyceps and more action in places but this was more of a drama surrounding the struggles of a broken world.

Overall ill give it an 8 out of 10 a very good Tv Show that stays loyal to its source and was very well produced.

**** Update *******

Ill start by saying I've never played the games, I've no idea how true to the source it is.

The first episode was very impressive, they told hold back here and emotionally you are involved quite early on.

The prologue was informative but understated, The opening was brilliant and as good as anything you would see in a movie.

The middle section is good and paced well to provide enough information going forward as to the objective the players and whats happened to the world outside.

The episode ends at the start of an adventure.... I hope this quality remains throughout the show so the adventure is as good as the opening ( a hard act to follow ).

Ive enjoyed the characters so far, not all likeable but our lead Pedro Pascal is familiar and trustworthy and does a good job. Bella Ramsey of Game of Thrones fame plays the female lead, I really hated her in Game of Thrones, her acting is a bit less wooden here so I hope I don't end up hating her in this. So far she has been fine.

Its only 1 episode but its probably a 9 out of 10. I would be shocked if they can keep up this sort of standard and narrative throughout the series. Having said that there is plenty of scope for some interesting scenes. Im not a big fan of Zombie films or shows but can find them entertaining. ( I found Black Summer S2 brilliant )

I hope this doesn't turn out to be just another zombie show.

9/10 ( Ep1)

Feels as natural as possible.
Lukasmj26 March 2024
First of all, I would like to say that I have never played the games and therefore cannot make any comparisons.

But that was not a problem at all. You can understand the series completely even if you have not played the games.

The first thing that caught my eye were the incredibly beautiful and detailed sets. Even though you can clearly see here and there that some things were done with a the computer, that does not take away from the atmosphere of the series at all.

The other thing that struck me as very positive was how natural the relationships and dialogues felt.

The relationship between Elli and Joel in particular felt more real than I have rarely seen in a series.

The acting was also good. I already knew Pedro Pascal and therefore expected him to do well, which he did without question.

I had not heard of Bella Ramsey before, so I did not know what to expect, but her performance really blew me away. She did her role damn well and I am convinced that she has a successful future in acting ahead of her.

I missed them when they were gone...
Jeddia6 January 2024
I'd seen the hype in the headlines about this show. I'm the type to wait for the physical media release (yes, I'm old)... So I avoided spoilers and awaited the 4k release and was not disappointed...

As a film generated from a video game, expectations are usually low - but the headlines said otherwise... Even the special features on the discs show the shot by shot staging of scenes from the game...

They brought this game (that I didn't play) to the screen in full glory - nothing was left to be desired.

And the chemistry between Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal is nothing short of legendary.. When the first season ended - I immediately missed them. Can't wait to see more.

And the cinematography and special effects are spot on...

i like it
JUSTINMK1144 April 2024
It is very good but not as good as the games PS5 feel like a more valent movie.

The way they did it is good I hope there will be a Days Gone movie ..

there is a lot to the game of the last of us that is not in the show if you like the show, you should play the game.

Part 2 or season 2 may be darker and a lot of people ask why.

But I hope the part 2 season 2 is good too like the game good actors so far.

Sony does put out some really good stuff.

I need more part 3 the game would be nice too.

The demand is very strong for the last of us... Maybe when the show is over, they can take their time and make a movie ...

What was the purpose of the show?
halcyonedit19 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This show suffers from a contrived setup and a lack of direction for the main storyline.

The creators really embraced the "tell don't show" approach. This is especially evident in the last episode. In the matter of a couple of episodes, Joel went from "I don't need you" to "I will slaughter innocent people for you". When did that happen, did I miss something? There's a time gap between the events of the last two episodes; why not take this opportunity to demonstrate how the bond between Joel and Ellie grows in the aftermath of the previous episode? When it comes to the finale as a whole, it seemed that the writers had no clear understanding of what they wanted to do with it, so they threw in random bits of conversations and interactions that are so disjointed it's frustrating to watch. The tension or suspense that should have been there is rarely present. The subject of the infected is barely touched upon. From what I gathered, they are pretty scarce and don't pose a big threat to others.

They spent an unforgivably long amount of time as they delved into exploring this jumble of supporting characters, only to have them all killed at the end of each episode. None of the significant scenes and dialogues were given time to really sink in, looking like a series of checkpoints, something which was better executed in the game.

The only light in this never ending darkness is the actors, especially Pedro Pascal. However, the series on the whole is pretty superficial, mainly because the screenplay had no clear direction.

I was skeptical at first but this show expectations by a mile!
stxvxiphone15 January 2023
I was skeptical when the show first went into developement and when gradually the cast was announced. I'm personally not a fan of Part 2 but I always somewhat had faith in HBO as HBO Originals are peak 90% of the time & they are some of my favourite shows of all time & for good reason. But I was still skeptical. But now that I got to watch the first episode at a screening, It was a lot better than I expected. A lot. Everything was on point. Like it's not a scene to scene adaptation of the game. But what it totally succeeds at is capturing the heart, lore, vibe, world of the The Last of Us. And with utter perfection. The acting is on point. I knew Pedro was going to be amazing as Ellie but I was skeptical about Nico as Sarah & Bella as Ellie. But watching this episode has removed any and all worries I had. Bella totally killed it as Ellie. I never thought I'd say this but she really did. The change from tendrils to spores is something I'm not a big fan of but it works here pretty nicely. Many scenes & dialogue are straight from the game. All that said, the production design is brilliant, the cinematography is what you'd expect from an HBO Original. And I haven't seen many other reviews praising Gustavo's work. Gustavo, the composer kills here with his incredible score same as the games.

And I never ever though I was going to say this but this is actually a pretty faithful adaptation of Bruce Straley & Neil Druckmann's work then years ago.

Sorry if this has grammatical & language errors, English is not my first language.

Deep and captivating survival drama
xhenimeraj-9054711 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I really loved this series . At the beginning, I had not high hopes and I just started it because of the hype, as the post-apocalyptic theme did not seem original to me.

Nonetheless, I liked it from the first episode. The narrative was well structured and the sequence of events run smoothly . The acting was really good ,as well, while the characters were absorbing and amusing .

I particularly appreciated their genuineness. It was hard to label them as good or bad even when they presented unjust behavior or actions , given that in times of crisis the uncertainty transforms people and awakens their primitive instincts.

This kind of character portrayal led to the appearance of some thought provoking moral dilemmas. For example, the story of Henry and Sam at episode 5 makes you wonder : is it acceptable and justifiable to sacrifice a life in order to save someone you love ? Or, in a personal level : would I do it too in those circumstances? The same goes for episode 8 and 9.

In episode 8 , the portrait of an unethical but (questionably) successful leader is depicted that could be characterized as a Machiavellian ruler. Through immoral , even hideous, methods he succeeds to preserve his community. Lastly, in episode 9, Joel chooses to save Ellie instead of allowing her sacrificing and saving humanity. Is it that easy to condemn him or we can justify him( given his story, his loses and his traumas)? . All in all, I really enjoyed this show that masterfully manages to deal with topics such as humanity, ethics, pandemic, social and political crisis and human relationships. I just hope that the second season will live up to the quality of the first one.

A Great show and adaptation
gehards31 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Usually video game adaptions are rubbish (resident evil, sonic) And it isn't as good as naughty dog's spectacular digital, virtual adventure (which I actually played after I saw the show) the headline said it all. The Last of Us is one of my favourite dramatic emotional tv shows spanning about ten, hour long episodes each gripping and authentic- quite thought provoking diving deep into different points and topics. Very Immersive. It's a bit slow paced for a post apocalyptic outlast though with lost of boring dialouge especiallyfor a VIDEOGAME ADAPTION. It's not a far fetched, chaotic apocalypse, more of a ruin of an aftermath as the result of a fascinating and terrifyingly real fungal infection (ophiocordyceps) terrifyingly manipulating the body. It compares to the walking dead and 28 days later but In my opinion it trumps them all, gripping you in dark and gritty emotion with quirks and twists that have you sympathize with the characters. The father daughter relationship between Joel and Ellie is just spectacular. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey really portrayed the classic video game protagonists so well. The grizzly old man, lost in the past of the outbreak and ellie the curious, feisty 14 year old, cute but dangerous. It really stays true to the game. Even an episode based upon its prequel dlc, left behind and one focused on bill and his relationship which feels awkward but key. The awesome, unique infected which I was excited to see only showed up once or twice in the most generic forms which disappointed me quite a bit. Though the bloater looked great! Bit I love the drunken, antagonistic humans. And David was a great villain, a strangely real obsession with ellie and appearance who shows up at the darkest times. It just shows the terror of cannibalism and what a global pandemic can do to human kind. It shows that the real monster are - well the flesh eating infected but you know also humanity itself which really makes you wonder if man deserves to survive or if nature itself should just take over completely. But I do think it really just shifts its focus to the survivors which is interesting but a bit boring sometimes. The end was great too. It just shows the bleak, depressing impact and story. She could've saved the world, the last hope and he chose the flip side. All this for that. That's the powerful, most moving part. Then you look at all their backstories. The sad and rightful deaths. Then the swear - the lie. Since the sequel successor, part II was amazing (though I didnt agree storywise) I'm definitely hype for season two.

The Last of Us: A Masterful Adaptation of a Critically Acclaimed Game
OzzzzSSzzzzO17 January 2023
"The Last of Us," the highly-anticipated HBO series based on the critically acclaimed video game of the same name, is a truly remarkable viewing experience that will leave you captivated from start to finish. The show expertly adapts the game's powerful storytelling and characters for the small screen, delivering a thrilling and emotionally charged journey through a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a deadly fungus.

One of the show's greatest strengths is its commitment to character development and emotional depth. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey give outstanding performances as Joel and Ellie, respectively, and the script does a masterful job of exploring the complex bond that forms between them as they navigate the dangers of a fallen society. The series also manages to expand on the game's already rich world-building, delving deeper into the politics and power struggles of the remaining human settlements.

The direction and production design are also top-notch, with the series effectively capturing the gritty, desperate feel of a world on the brink of collapse. The cinematography and score also deserve special mention, adding to the overall atmosphere of the show and amplifying the emotional impact of key scenes. The special effects used in the series are also outstanding and adds to the cinematic feel of the show.

The series also delves into the psychological and emotional impact of the characters, and the audience can see the gradual change in the characters throughout the series. The script is well written and leaves a lasting impact on the audience. The pacing of the series is also well done and keeps the audience engaged throughout the show.

Overall, "The Last of Us" is a must-watch for fans of the game and newcomers alike. The series manages to stay true to the source material while also standing on its own as a masterful piece of storytelling. It's a thrilling and ultimately hopeful, tale of survival and humanity in the face of unimaginable horror that will leave you in awe.

It is the storytelling, powerful performances, and the intense atmosphere that will leave you captivated and sets it apart as an unforgettable watch. The series also raises some thought-provoking questions about the nature of humanity and the lengths we will go to survive. It's a series that will stay with you long after you've finished watching it."

Death by Shrooms...
sherwoodbandit-197710 March 2024
This is easily the best new television series I've seen in a very long time. The writing, directing, cinematography and performances are all immaculate. I had very little context, having never played the games or knowing much about the story, but Post-Apocalyptic stories are my jam. The Stand has been my favorite novel forever, I Am Legend, early Walking Dead...these are stories that I am the target audience for. I wanted to wait for all of the episodes to be available so that I could binge and I wasn't disappointed by this. Sure, social media ruined several of the storylines for me months ago, but that didn't stop me from being completely sucked in and enjoying this series to the fullest extent. I don't hand out a lot of 10s on this app, but this was the easiest rating to give to date. Looking forward to season two!

Lives up to its reputation as a great series
nicktusk-9559124 December 2023
I've never played the video game personally. I'm sure it's a good game but nor will I. I played resident evil, but I've never heard of a great TV series being made after a great video game. I mean look at Mortal Kombat look at street fighter lol assassin's Creed call of duty made a movie I mean it probably wouldn't be that good. The last of us is the exact opposite! Groundbreaking great series should continue on 10 times better than halo even though I love Pablo Schreiber, Pedro Pascal kills it. Bella Ramsey kills it. The writing is great. The directing is great de acting is great. I was on pins and needles practically every single episode. I've seen World War™ Z The Walking Dead, but this probably tops all of those believe it or not.

Warning: Spoilers
I'll start with the negatives:

My opinion after Episode 8 was that you cannot tell the story of TLOU in such short episodes, that was after a 50 min episode.

For the finale, it was unforgivably the shortest episode of the season at 44 mins?

Overall, the show started off really really good. In the first few episodes I was recommending this to everyone I talked to, telling them that this was one of my favourite shows I'd ever watched.

Unfortunately, that opinion changed after Episode 6.

From 7 onwards, I felt the show just shifted from being too slow at times to needlessly rushing through specific plots, character relationships and action sequences that took place in the game that enriched the story, added suspense and drama, and gave depth to character relationships.

The pacing from the majority of the first half of the season just didn't match up with the second half.

Also characters being introduced at the start of an episode and then being killed off at the end felt too quick and rushed. Had they split the season up or made episodes longer, I think that may have made it seem less rushed.

In hindsight, I wish they had skipped certain things they added to the show that were not in the game, and stuck to the original storyline.

I thought the casting of David and Riley was poor.

In David's case, I didn't feel the actor was an accurate on-screen version of him or that they did a good enough job of portraying how creepy he was.

This was also largely due to the fact that they skipped over his whole storyline of helping Ellie fight a swarm of infected, in which he gains her trust, before revealing that he knew who she was all along.

I had really been looking forward to his encounter with Ellie and unfortunately was left very disappointed when they rushed through his story in 50 mins.

I also would have liked to see Joel have to fight his way through David's survivor group to get to Ellie.

Instead it was a rather easy process for him to find her, and for them to escape a whole resort of people that were hungry for revenge for what he had done in Colorado.

In the case of Riley, I just didn't feel like her relationship with Ellie was authentic or believable. When compared to Bill and Frank, who I felt an emotional connection with, I felt nothing when watching Ellie and Riley together. It was rather bland and felt rushed.

In general, I found that episode mostly boring, and thought that they ruined it by showing the infected person so early on that would attack them at the end of the episode.

To me, this completely removed the element of surprise, and I found myself sitting there bored during the episode just waiting for him to attack Ellie and Riley.

I thought the finale should have been much longer, as it felt rushed and basically like the show's producers had run out of time and needed to cram the rest of the story in.

I would have liked to seen the hospital scene more drawn out, although I will say that I liked how it was done so artistically and with the music in the background.

Although Joel cares for Ellie, this doesn't necessarily make him a good person.

It felt like the show rushed through scenes where we see him be ruthless to get what he needs/wants, and would have liked to have seen his character development fleshed out a bit more, along with his relationship with Ellie.

Now for the positives:

I loved Bill and Frank's episode.

I was a bit disappointed that we never got to see Ellie meet Bill as their encounters in the game are hilarious, but I loved what the producers did in writing a story that had me really caring for 2 people who were not main characters in the game and whose story wasn't explored originally.

I thought Bill/Frank's episode (Episode 3) did a really great job of portraying post-apocalyptic life with someone you loved and cared about, and how you wouldn't want to go on living without them. Max Richter's "On the Nature of Daylight" was used beautifully in their final moments together.

In fact, overall, the soundtrack for the show was really good in my opinion. It was great that they brought back Gustavo Santaolalla to do it.

Episode 3 ran at 1 hr and 16 mins, which to me was perfect. I don't know why the producers didn't make all the episodes as long as this or as the season premiere's.

I also enjoyed the other added backstories which weren't featured in the game, as I felt that these really enriched the story. These included:
  • the origin of the outbreak
  • Ellie's birth and her immunity
  • Kathleen and her insatiable hunger for revenge

There were some nods to fans of the game as well that were a nice touch such as
  • Ashley Johnson (Ellie's voice actor from the game) play Ellie's mother
  • Troy Baker (Joel's voice actor) play James
  • Jeffrey Pierce (Tommy's voice actor) be killed by a bloater exactly in a manner that happens in the game.

It was also great hearing the original music from the game used so heavily as it really brought me back to playing it years ago for the first time. Hearing that music and Ellie tell her pun jokes was very nostalgic.

In terms of acting, I thought Pedro Pascal was very good, as was Bella Ramsey.

They both did a great job of portraying Joel and Ellie with the scenes they were given.

Although this show had a lot of good things about it, overall it left me thinking it could have been much better, and that they could have done a lot more with the story, and not rushed certain scenes or character storylines.

I'll summarise this show with a quote from a friend:

"My wife hates zombies, but she doesn't mind watching TLOU because there is never really any of them in it".

Overall, I think that has been a huge downside to a show that started off so well, from Episode 1 showing how terrifying a day one outbreak can be, to Episode 5 showing a evolved swarm attacking a group of armed survivors.

While we didn't need "The Walking Dead" level of zombies in every episode, this show, in my opinion, just skipped too many scenes that should have featured them a bit more, and largely for that reason, it just doesn't live up to the real drama, suspense and terror of the game.

The Walking Dead with Evil Mushrooms
mhafen10 June 2023
Honestly, I don't get what people see in this series. Most of the positive reviews I've read all compare it to the video game. Fair enough. If it holds true to the game, and you liked the game, then I guess this is for you. Not me. I've never played the game. In this case, a zombie is a zombie, and a post-apocalyptic landscape is a post-apocalyptic landscape. I've seen nothing new or original in this story. It's a combination of The Stand and The Walking Dead. Now, I have to admit, the actors are good (the only reason I rated it four stars), and they do an admirable job with what is a predictable script. But unless you're a fan of the video game, I don't see how this show can stand on its own.
