- Ragnar and Lagertha's fleets depart Kattegat once more for Wessex but this time they bring settlers. King Ecbert hosts the Vikings and proposes a deal. Despite the misgivings of some of the other leaders, Ragnar leads his forces into battle once more, but this time as allies of Wessex.
- Ragnar, Lagertha and their followers leave for Wessex to take up King Ecbert's offer of free land for settlement and farming. They complete the journey safely and Ecbert welcomes them. The Vikings learn that those who had stayed behind to fight for Princess Kwenthrith have all died and that her brother and uncle have defeated her forces. She has not given up her claim on Mercia however and Ecbert advises the new arrivals that to get the land he promised them, they must first assist the princess in her claim. A compromise is reached: Ragnar will lead some of their followers into battle while Lagertha will lead the remainder to the promised land. At home, there is a plot to replace Lagertha as Earl and Aslaug worries about her newborn child.—garykmcd
- After an endless winter, most Viking men can't wait to leave their barren homes and clingy families to sail West and plunder or settle in Wessex. Bjorn has to allow shield maiden Porrun to join, like Lagertha, who entrusts her 'earldom' to seemingly loyal commoner Kalf, who instead of executing her predecessor's lieutenant offers him a plot to restore the old dynasty. Athesltan enjoy full trust from king Ecbert as well as Ragnar, who agrees to leave his best man behind in Wessex with Lagertha, who is to lead the settlers to set up farms. Bjorn and Rollo eagerly join the mercenary party under Ragnar to fight Ecbert's Mercian ally princess Kwenthrith's expedition to subdue her 'usurping' uncle Brithwulf and brother Burgred's armies, but she seems unpleasantly surprised when the Vikings make brilliant use of the enemy forces being on unlinked river banks.—KGF Vissers
