Hardworking divorcée Loretta Bowersock won't admit it, but when she posts an ad in the newspaper to let out her house's guest suite, she secretly harbors dreams of meeting an eligible bachelor. Her dreams are answered in the form of Taw Benderly, a suave and handsome inventor who rides into her life on a Harley. It doesn't take long for Taw to work his way into Loretta's heart and into her bed. Over an 18-year relationship, he convinces Loretta to part with increasing amounts of money to fund his hopeless inventions, in the process driving a wedge between her and her family. When Loretta discovers that her house is due for foreclosure because Taw has stolen the mortgage payments, Taw kills her in a murderous rage. When the police investigate Loretta's disappearance, they soon realize that Taw's alibi is suspect. Taw knows that his time is running out, and he hangs himself in the garage of the home he shared with Loretta. Years later Loretta's daughter Terri finds her mother's body buried in the desert.
