- Lewis' reputation is jeopardized when the very first case that he solved as a DI is reopened for appeal and new murders are committed with the original weapon.
- Lewis' reputation is on the line when one of his old cases, from 2001, is reopened after it's revealed there was cross-contamination of the DNA evidence. Graham Lawrie was convicted of killing three policeman with a hammer but has consistently protested his innocence in the 13 years he's been in custody. Now the lab that conducted the forensic tests has been found at fault in two other cases. To make matters worse, a uniformed has now been killed in a similar manner. Lewis is convinced that Lawrie is a psychopath and the most recent death was either a copycat killing or the work of an accomplice. Hathaway is the senior investigating officer and keeps an open mind realizing the possibility of a wrongful conviction as well. To complicate things, it appears Lawrie had an alibi for the murder of one of the policemen in 2001 but the police report was never presented. Just as Lawrie is set free by the appeals court, another officer is struck down.—garykmcd
- A policeman is ambushed and murdered in a crime reminiscent of a string of murders that occurred 13 years earlier. Graham Lawrie was convicted of those crimes but is about to be released on a technicality. Lawrie was in jail at the time of this murder but could he have associates carrying out these deeds on his behalf?—grantss
- Dr. Sally Rook goes to see Graham Lawrie. Lawrie was convicted of killing three policeman with a hammer but has consistently protested his innocence in the 13 years he's been in custody. Lewis receives a call to tell him that Lawrie's original case is about to be thrown out on appeal. The lab that did the original DNA testing had contaminated evidence on the original case. Pamela Carson, a bookbinder, also visits Lawrie and brings him a book with hollowed-out pages.
As Hathaway and Maddox meet for a drink, police receive a report of a potential jumper at an Oxford tower. PC Mark Travis climbs the tower in hopes of talking the jumper down. Lawrie is still in his cell. As Travis searches for the jumper, someone sneaks up on him and smashes his head with a hammer, in the manner of Lawrie's murders.
Lewis wants to blame Lawrie in some way for the new murder. Hathaway has yet to be convinced, so Lewis is asked to back off since he is personally involved. Dr. Rook is doing research on psychopathology and has interviewed Lawrie many times, so Hathaway and Maddox go to interview her. She gives them the three visitors that have gone to see Lawrie in the last year: Pamela Carson; Dr. Brendan Ward; and Katherine Warwick, Lawrie's lawyer. They find that Carson is leading a "Free Lawrie" movement.
Maddox goes to interview Dr. Ward, while Hathaway goes to see Warwick. Ward had visited Lawrie at Dr. Rook's request to encourage his interest in learning, but comments that his understanding of Nietzsche is shallow. He also has a nasty bruise on his cheek. Warwick points out an alibi of Lawrie's in the original case that had never been given at trial.
Lawrie texts Lewis. "Be seeing you." Hathaway goes to see him. The visitor log reveals Brendan Ward had been to see him seventeen times in the last year. Hathaway and Lawrie spar, with Lawrie proclaiming his innocence of all the murders. They search Lawrie's cell and discover pills and a cell phone. Carson admits she had sent him steroid pills to help him bulk up to protect himself in prison.
Lewis, fearful of Lawrie's thirst for revenge, asks Hobson to go away until the case is resolved; she refuses. Maddox visits Hugo Blayne, Lawrie's biographer. He admits to giving Lawrie Lewis's number. He has also recorded several calls between himself and Lawrie. Maddox listens to one with a therapy session, where Lawrie ruminates on the elegance of extinguishing a life with his hammer.
Ward's student Luke Burgess goes to visit Dr. Rook for unexplained purposes. Hathaway and Lewis suspect that Rook has been passing on instructions from Lawrie via her interviews, but she indignantly denies it, and reveals that Lewis had gone to visit Lawrie as well. During the visit, Lawrie threatens both Lewis and Hobson as Hathaway pulls Lewis from the room, and chews Lewis out for interfering.
Lawrie's appeal is held at the same time as PC Travis' funeral. Blayne tries to crash the funeral, but Lewis throws him out. Maddox mentions that Blayne has been harassing her. Hathaway watches as Blayne and Warwick leave in a car together. Maddox receives a text saying her husband Tony has been in an accident. She goes to find him, but meanwhile Tony shows up at the funeral, right as rain. Lewis races to find Maddox. She has been beaten with a hammer. Lawrie is released from prison.
Maddox is taken to the hospital. Tony tells Lewis and Hathaway they must find who did it or he will. Lawrie, now free, confronts Lewis but is held back by Hathaway. Dr. Rook says on the radio she thinks Lawrie is guilty. Lawrie again threatens Lewis. Lawrie runs a gauntlet of paparazzi to return to his home where Carson has been waiting, but he refuses to let her in.
Hathaway confronts Blayne about the attack on Maddox, while Rook tells Lewis she wants to help and gives a psychological profile of Maddox's attacker. As Lewis leaves, he runs into Burgess coming to see Rook. Lewis and Hathaway talk to Carson who is still loyal to Lawrie despite his rejection. Burgess tries to follow Lawrie, but Lawrie confronts him, and they go off together.
Lawrie's orderly, Douglas Wilkins, is enraged when he sees Lawrie loose on TV and trashes a gym. He's been taking steroids provided by Lawrie in exchange for the phone. At Lawrie's request, Wilkins had gone to see Dr. Ward to tell him not to visit Lawrie again. Lewis and Hathaway discuss bringing in Lawrie for questioning.
Lewis visits Ward again. Wilkins had beaten him, Ward says, because he challenged Lawrie intellectually, but Ward had only gone to see Lawrie twice. Lawrie says Ward doesn't understand power. Hathaway confronts Warwick, concerning her relationship with Blayne, in front of Lawrie. They review tape to determine the discrepancy in the number of times Ward visited, and it turns out to be Burgess who had been visiting, using Ward's ID. They visit Burgess' room and find a wall of articles on Lawrie, as well as the Nietzsche book Lawrie likes.
Burgess and Lawrie meet. Lawrie tells him he had nothing to do with Maddox or the cop. Burgess wants to learn from him. Lawrie tells he's about to learn how to be accused, as he sees Hathaway aproaching.
Burgess has been borrowing Ward's ID. When Hathaway asks him who was involved in the murder, Burgess says he wishes he knew as he would like to meet them. He appears only to be fascinated by psychopaths, but he has Ward's wallet still. They find a picture of PC Chadwick, one of Lawrie's original victims, in the wallet. When the re-interview Ward, he admits to a homesexual relationship with Chadwick.
As Lawrie listens to Wagner on his radio, someone knocks at his door and he goes to answer it. Hathaway and Lewis are talking to Rook when a 999 call comes in from Lawrie's address. They go in in forceand find Lawrie on the floor, killed by a single blow to the back of the head. They identify on video a car driving back and forth in front of the house which turns out to belong to Tony Maddox, but he claims to have left without ever seeing Lawrie, and no forensic evidence links him to the crime. They return to Lawrie's house, and find a postcard from Carson, dated from 2000, much earlier than they thought she had known him. They rush to Carson's house, where they find her trying to wash blood from her hands. She admits to a long-term relationship with Lawrie, as well as the attacks on Travis and Maddox.
