Most of the film was shot on location in Iceland. The actors had to pretend they were in a very hot environment of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit despite the fact that they were actually filming in sub-zero temperatures. The weather was so taxing that cast members passing out was an everyday occurrence, and the cast and crew took friendly bets on who would pass out first (the bets were made to keep morale high).

Spoilers

The trivia items below may give away important plot points.

The Lekgolo, or Hunter Worms, are the sole alien threat on the Alpha Shard. It is already well-established within the Halo mythos that the Lekgolo originate from the planet Te, which has an incredibly oppressive biosphere; thus, the Lekgolo are capable of surviving such conditions as the intense heat present on the Alpha Shard and even the vacuum of space, for months at a time with no food. This explains why the Lekgolo are present on Alpha Shard while other aliens- most notably the Flood- are not.
