Nicholas is now involved with Selina, but intrigued by Joanna and arranges to record her reciting a poetry reading at the May of Teck club. Nancy is struggling to come to terms with the ending of her affair with a married American G.I. soldier, while Jane hands Nicholas the letter she has forged for him. She invites her boss' wife Tilly over in order to use her to sway her husband into publishing his manuscript, but Tilly finds herself in a predicament of her own with the bathroom window. But all that pails into insignificance when an unexploded bomb suddenly sets off, leading to many of the girls trapped. The incident and the tragedy that unfolds has a profound effect on Nicholas, who ends up as one of the rescue party.
